First record of the isopod Idotea hectica (Pallas, 1772) (Idoteidae) and of the brachyuran crab Matuta victor (Fabricius, 1781) (Matutidae) in the Hellenic waters
The presence and the establishment of Idotea hectica is reported for the first time in the Hellenic seas on the basis of three adult specimens and a juvenile collected from Posidonia oceanica meadows close to the main town of Rhodes Island, Aegean Sea. Common and contrasting characters between this and other species of the genera Idotea and Pentidotea are briefly discussed. Furthermore, following a westward expansion along the eastern Mediterranean coasts, Matuta victor was discovered for the first time in Hellenic waters on the basis of a single specimen from the northeast of Rhodes Island

State and Church in Byzantium during the Civil War of 1321-1328: the Emperor Andronikos II Palaiologos and the Patriarchs Gerasimos I and Esaias
The goal of the present research work is to determine the role of church in political events during the war between Andronikos II and Andronikos III Palaiologoi (1321-1328) in the Byzantine empire. Its urgency is defined by incomplete explanation of this aspect in Russian and foreign historiography. The first part of the article is devoted to the study of relations between the state and the church during the Andronikos II Palaiologos’ earlier rule (1282-1320). The author concludes that under the church troubles patriarchs sought to rely on the ruling emperor but happened to have no support. As far as state-church relations during the civil war are concerned, they are studied in the second part of the research work. The author puts an emphasis on the patriarchs Gerasimos I (1320-1321) and Esaias’ (1323-1334) political position and clears up the degree of their participation in the conflict between the emperors. He finds out that the church role in political events at that time was high enough. The crisis of power led to a change in relations between patriarchs and Andronikos II; in other words, during the civil war period they did not support him and came down on the side of his grandson. At the same time the synod remained loyal to the ruling emperor
Synchiropus sechellensis (Actinopterygii: Perciformes: Callionymidae), a new alien in the Aegean Sea and Hellenic waters
Synchiropus sechellensis (Regan, 1908) was discovered in Kastellorizo Isl. (Levantine Sea, Greece) in September 2014, few months after its first record in Antalya Gulf, Turkey. Later, in February 2016, the species was recorded for the first time in the Aegean Sea, in Rhodes Island. The short time interval between the findings indicates a possible establishment in the area and a dynamic spread of the species northwards in the Eastern Mediterranean
Population Biology of the Non-Indigenous Rayed Pearl Oyster (Pinctada radiata) in the South Evoikos Gulf, Greece
The Atlantic pearl oyster Pinctada radiata (Leach, 1814), the first documented Lessepsian bivalve species to enter the Mediterranean basin, is present in various coastal areas in Greece, and constitutes, almost exclusively, a domestic commercial bivalve resource. The present study aimed to contribute to the limited information available on P. radiata population structure and dynamics in Hellenic waters, especially following the recent enforcement of legislation for regulation of its fishery. A total of 703 individuals were collected using scuba diving from the South Evoikos Gulf. The male-to-female ratio (1:1.70) significantly departed from 1:1. A higher probability for female prevalence was exhibited for shell heights over 50.77 mm. Significant differences were exhibited in the shell height–total weight relationship between the sexes. The fourth-year class was the dominant cohort, comprising 50.09% of the population, out of the seven age classes identified. Asymptotic length was estimated at 109.1 mm and growth index at 3.35, respectively. Longevity was estimated at 15.7 years, with natural mortality (M) at 0.39 and total mortality (Z) at 0.76. The probability of capture (LC50) was estimated at 50.72 mm at 2.8 years. Biological reference points FMSY and EMSY were higher than the fishing mortality and current exploitation rate, respectively, indicating the potential for further population exploitation
Alien and native fish in gill nets at Rhodes, eastern Mediterranean (2014–2015)
Fish catch composition in 21 gill net samplings performed between 2014 and 2015 at Rhodes Island (Aegean Sea, Greece) was analysed, with the aim to contribute in filling scattered information on coastal fish assemblages in a Mediterranean region heavily impacted by biological invasions. A total biomass of 183 kg was collected comprising 1070 fish individuals, distributed along 43 native and six Lessepsian migrant species. The alien Siganus luridus prevailed in terms of frequency of occurrence, followed by the native Sparisoma cretense, which exhibited the higher abundance and biomass, followed by S. luridus, Scorpaena scrofa and Siganus rivulatus. Ratios between alien and native species as well as between their abundance and biomass are discussed.</jats:p
Crustacea Decapoda from the Rhodes Island Area (Eastern Mediterranean): New Records and an Updated Checklist
Decapod crustaceans are ecologically and commercially important members of marine communities. Faunal surveys constitute essential tools for the understanding of local diversity, especially in areas subjected to significant alterations of community composition due to climate changes, anthropogenic impacts, and biological invasions. Following a literature review and the study of new samples, we hereby update on the Crustacea Decapoda from the Rhodes Island area (Greece), situated in a key position in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. Published data yielded records of 120 species, whereas 28 taxa are recorded here for the first time from the study area. Among them, the collection of Liocarcinus bolivari widens its distribution to the eastern Mediterranean. Details on material examined and distributional/faunal remarks are provided for the species newly recorded and for some other native and alien species rarely reported from Rhodes. The present paper raises the local decapod biodiversity to 148 species, accounting for ~50% of the Hellenic Aegean decapod fauna and provides a useful baseline for analysing the long-term changes in the local fauna and the westward spreading of Lessepsian species. Despite present advances, the lack of records of many common Mediterranean species may be still due to limited fieldwork in some habitats rather than a true absence
