Citation: Kübel, M., Siemering, R., Burger, C., Kling, N. G., Li, H., Alnaser, A. S., . . . Kling, M. F. (2016). Steering Proton Migration in Hydrocarbons Using Intense Few-Cycle Laser Fields. Physical Review Letters, 116(19). doi:10.1103/PhysRevLett.116.193001Proton migration is a ubiquitous process in chemical reactions related to biology, combustion, and catalysis. Thus, the ability to manipulate the movement of nuclei with tailored light within a hydrocarbon molecule holds promise for far-reaching applications. Here, we demonstrate the steering of hydrogen migration in simple hydrocarbons, namely, acetylene and allene, using waveform-controlled, few-cycle laser pulses. The rearrangement dynamics is monitored using coincident 3D momentum imaging spectroscopy and described with a widely applicable quantum-dynamical model. Our observations reveal that the underlying control mechanism is due to the manipulation of the phases in a vibrational wave packet by the intense off-resonant laser field. © 2016 American Physical Society

“John Kling was born on July 13, 1925 in Hogyes, Hungary to John and Margaret (Szeldner) Kling. John's father was employed as a carriage driver until 1935, when he and his family moved to Zomba, Hungary. In Zomba, the Kling family were farmers. In 1944, John and his father were recruited in the German army. John was married on September 15, 1953, in Rasantal, West Germany. John immigrated to Milwaukee, Wisconsin on March 11, 1955 to be with his wife. He and his wife have lived there ever since. They have two children, John born in 1956 and Eve Marie born in 1960. In Milwaukee, John has been employed by A & P Bakery (1956-1966), by Heineman Bakery (1966), and by Harnischfeger as a carpenter (1966-1991). John has been very active in the German community of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was a member of the German Language and School Society (1964-1977) and is a member of the Milwaukee Donauschwaben (1972-present). John is currently a Delegate for the Donauschwaben to the United Donauschwaben in Milwaukee. John Kling has lived in six different countries, these include: Hungary, Austria, Czechoslovakia, Eastern Germany, Western Germany, and his current address in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.” - Timothy E. The Internet for Sociologists

Within the last five years, many sociologists have discovered electronic mail (e-mail) discussion lists (such as LISTSERVs) and the World Wide Web (WWW)-- services, that are associated with a network of computer networks popularly referred to as "the Internet." Over the last twenty years, academics in certain disciplines, especially the lab sciences, have found computer networking to be a viable means for sharing data, organizing professionals discussions, keeping in touch with colleagues, and distributing documents, such as conference programs, preprints, and syllabi. This brief article has the unmodest ambition of explaining to sociologists why they should take the Internet seriously as a medium of professional communication, and why some sociologists should be specially interested in the Internet (or other computer networks) as social spaces in which to study shifting social relationships in our society. Part I may be specially useful to sociologists who have relatively limited experience with Internet services. Part II discusses sociological uses of the Internet to support research, teaching, and professional communication that could interest readers with significant Internet experiences.Indiana Universit

Complete characterization of single-cycle double ionization of argon from the nonsequential to the sequential ionization regime. Physical Review A, 93(5), 9. doi:10.1103/PhysRevA.93.053422Selected features of nonsequential double ionization have been qualitatively reproduced by a multitude of different (quantum and classical) approaches. In general, however, the typical uncertainty of laser pulse parameters and the restricted number of observables measured in individual experiments leave room for adjusting theoretical results to match the experimental data. While this has been hampering the assessment of different theoretical approaches leading to conflicting interpretations, comprehensive experimental data that would allow such an ultimate and quantitative assessment have been missing so far. To remedy this situation we have performed a kinematically complete measurement of single-cycle multiple ionization of argon over a one order of magnitude range of intensity. The momenta of electrons and ions resulting from the ionization of the target gas are measured in coincidence, while each ionization event is tagged with the carrier-envelope phase and intensity of the 4-fs laser pulse driving the process. The acquired highly differential experimental data provide a benchmark for a rigorous test of the many competing theoretical models used to describe nonsequential double ionization
