Reducing the thermal dependence of silica-based arrayed-waveguide grating using inorganic-organic hybrid materials

    No full text
This study demonstrates the application of a temperature-independent arrayed-waveguide grating (AWG) using a simple hybrid waveguide structure composed of silica core/inorganic-organic hybrid material overcladding layer. The thermooptic effect of the hybrid materials varies over a wide range of temperature and provides athermal characteristics in an AWG. The temperature dependence of the AWG was reduced through the precision control of the thermooptic coefficient of the hybrid materials (Deltalambda =similar to 3 pm/degreesC)

Modification of thermo-optic characteristics of sol-gel inorganic-organic hybrid materials

The effect of the inorganic oxide network on the variation of thermo-optic characteristics (dn/dT) in inorganic-organic hybrid material prepared through the sol-gel process was investigated. The dn/dT values were negative for all samples, and decreased in magnitude with the increasing concentration of the inorganic oxide or heterometallic oxide network. The dn/dT also became less negative with the increase in the degree of inorganic condensation in sol-gel reaction. A negative dn/dT value is consistent with thermal expansion of the material, and it is believed that the value of the dn/dT in our inorganic-organic hybrid materials was principally sensitive to variations in expansion term. The authors gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the Sol-Gel Innovation Project (SOLIP) founded by Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Energy (MOCIE) in Korea

Progression of Pre-Existing Vitiligo during Secukinumab Treatment for Psoriasis

Vitiligo has been considered an unexplained paradoxical phenomenon during biologics use. Herein, we report an adult case of progression of pre-existing vitiligo during secukinumab treatment for psoriasis, and we also examined the immunohistochemical changes in relation to biologics use. He was being administered monthly secukinumab of 300 mg dose for 2 years, and all psoriatic lesions were cleared, but pre-existing hypopigmented lesions became more distinct and larger than before unlike when using adalimumab. A skin biopsy of the hypopigmented lesion showed loss of epidermal melanocytes and absence of gp100 immune activities, and he was finally diagnosed with progression of pre-existing vitiligo. Immunohistochemical staining of vitiligo lesion showed decrease in interleukin-17 and tumor necrosis factor-α and increase in CD8+ T cells, interferon-γ, and CXCL10 after the use of secukinumab. In this study, we suggest that biologics-induced cytokine imbalance play a critical role in vitiligo progression in patients with chronic inflammatory diseases, including psoriasis
