Study of ion cyclotron range of frequencies heating characteristics in deuterium plasma in the Large Helical Device
0000-0003-0755-2433The characteristics of ion cyclotron range of frequencies (ICRF) minority ion heating with a hydrogen minority and deuterium majority plasma were studied by ICRF modulation injection experiments in the Large Helical Device (LHD). In recent experiments with deuterium plasma, no significant increase in the neutron emission rate due to ICRF second harmonic deuteron heating was observed. Therefore, in this study, the neutron emission rate was used to refer to the information regarding the thermal ion component. Like the results of the observations of the heating efficiencies at various minority proton ratios, the experimental results showed good agreement with the simple model simulation of ICRF wave absorption. During these experiments, the accelerated minority hydrogen ions were observed by neutral particle analyzers. The counting rates of the energetic particles were higher in the lines of sight passing through the helical ripple than across the magnetic axis, and the counting rate decreased as the minority hydrogen ion ratio increased. The dependence of the minority hydrogen ion ratio on the density of the energetic ions was consistent with the experimentally observed heating efficiencies and simulations. The heating efficiency of ICRF minority ion heating could be well explained by simple model simulation in the LHD deuterium experiment.journal articl
Feedback control of plasma density and heating power for steady state operation in LHD
0000-0003-0755-2433For steady state operation, the feedback control of plasma density and heating power system was developed in the Large Helical Device (LHD). In order to achieve a record of the long pulse discharge, stable plasma density and heating power are needed. This system contains the radio frequency (RF) heating power control, interlocks, gas fueling, automatic RF phase control, ion cyclotron range of frequency (ICRF) antenna position control, and graphical user interface (GUI). Using the density control system, the electron density was controlled to the target density and using the RF heating power control system, the RF power injection could be stable. As a result of using this system, we achieved the long pulse up to 48 min in the electron density of more than 1 × 1019 m−3. Further, the ICRF hardware experienced no critical accidents during the 17th LHD experiment campaign in 2013.journal articl
Developing compact and innovative dual-band thermal imagers using multi-layer diffractive optical elements
Infrared (IR) remote sensing offers a huge range of applications, mostly addressing make-or-break issues of our century (wildfires, irrigation monitoring, etc.). Multispectral spaceborne instruments require bulky optical systems designed for a specific scientific goal and have very low revisit time. Thereby, constellations of small satellites embarking compact dual-band IR imagers are very promising solutions. We study a dual-band IR diffractive element called multilayer diffractive optical elements (MLDOE). It replaces classical diffractive lenses (DOEs) that cannot operate simultaneously in two distinct wavebands. An MLDOE design is studied using the rigorous finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. Its performance at the ”best” focal plane is deduced using free-space Fourier optics wave propagation. The presented MLDOE design has over 80% Strehl ratio in both bands, outperforming classical DOEs. Its chromatic focal shift has a negative variation, in opposition to refractive lenses, allowing efficient and compact dual-band hybrid lenses.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Spaceborne Instrumentatio
Scandalous Shuji Terayama : between the postulates and the reception of his art
Niniejszy artykuł stanowi analizę odbioru sztuki Shujiego Terayamy w kontekście postulatów twórcy. Kontrowersyjne obrazy filmowe oraz odważne działania performatywne Terayamy do dzisiaj stanowią inspirację dla młodych pokoleń artystów niezależnych. Czerpiąc z teorii teatru okrucieństwa Antonina Artauda oraz nawołując do rewolucji seksualnej poprzez ukazanie transgresji cielesnych i odrzucenie norm społecznych, japoński artysta próbował przekazać widzom swoją wizję nowej, nieskrępowanej tradycją kulturową sztuki. W niniejszym artykule przedstawione zostały kontrowersje związane z odbiorem twórczości Terayamy, wynikające z niezrozumienia przez publiczność postulatów artysty. The presented article is an analysis of the reception of Shuji Terayama's art in context of his postulates. The controversial films and daring performing acts of Terayama are the inspirations for the young generations of independent artists until this day. The director's main pursuit was connected with the effort to transfer his vision of a new, derived from traditional culture, art into the viewer's minds. To accomplish his goal Terayama took inspiration from Antonin Artaud's theatre conventions and presented his vision of body transgressions and refusal of social norms. The presented article shows the controversies connected with the reception of Terayama's art, resulting from the complicated way of presenting the postulates by the author himself

Third harmonic ICRF heating in LHD hydrogen experiments
0000-0003-0755-2433The ion cyclotron range of frequencies (ICRF) heating power injection in the hydrogen experiment in LHD was demonstrated after the upgrade of ICRF antennas. The ICRF wave couples and accelerates the energetic particles injected by perpendicular-NBIs with 40 keV. The simulation by the MORH code shows the existence of energetic particles around the ICRF third harmonic resonance layers. As the result of ICRF heating power deposition, the beta value increased by 0.2% in absolute beta mainly due to the increased energetic particle content. The increase of energetic ions particularly around 60 keV, which should be accelerated by the ICRF heating, is observed. The ICRF heating efficiency was approximately 30%–50%, estimated from the break-in-slope analysis at the turn off timing of ICRF power from the stored energy measured by diamagnetic loops. This increase of the stored energy is mostly the contribution of the increased energetic particles. The heating efficiency increases as the density increases.journal articl
VISUALIZATION AND STUDY OF DYNAMIC 2D SHAPES VIA CURVATURE
The paper presents a new result on dynamical properties of the skeleton (medial axis) of a 2D/3D shape and a Java program for visualization, description, and study of dynamic 2D shapes via curvature. The program was developed by the first author and was used by the second author as an education tool for a number of courses (Applied Differential Geometry, Computational Geometry, Mathematical Methods in Computer Graphics) taught at the University of Aizu. The paper consists of two main sections. A rough description of the program and demonstration of its basic visualization capabilities is provided in the first section. The second section presents a new mathematical result describing dynamical properties of the skeleton (medial axis) of a 2D/3D bounded figure. The 2D version of the result was discovered during authors' experiments with the program.</p
STUDIES ON CHARACTERISTICS OF BED CONFIGURATIONS IN OPEN CHANNELS (2) -From Experiments by Use of a Closed Channel with Movable Bed-
To approach to phenomena of movable bed in open channel flows, especially char-acteristics of bed configuration and flow resistance, the fundamental experiments arecarried out by use of a closed channel with movable bed.Characteristics of bed configuration in closed channel flows are almost identical withthe results of experimental observations in open channel flows. Transitions from initialflat bed to undulation beds of ripple-dune type, and its break-down process are observed. On the basis of analytical results of the closed channel experiments, author discussesthe mechanisms of transion processes in open channel flows. Then, eixistence of freewater surface, I. E. Froude number, does not takes any part in break-down process ofundulation beds, but non-dimensional quantity u*2/(σ/ρ - 1)gd.And, To study the law of flow resistance of movable beds, author indicates thatentropical analysis to energy dissipation processes in open channel flows on movable bedmust be introduced. In last part of this paper, the tendencies of flow resistance in unsteady flows on movablebeds in the closed channel are described. Magnetic island dynamics in magnetic reconnection in UTST experiments
0000-0003-0755-2433The dynamics of the magnetic island formed inside the reconnection current layer was investigated under the strong guide field in the UTST spherical tokamak merging experiment. A pair of proximately located O- and X-points was generated at ∼5 cm away from the other X-point. The formed O- and X-points immediately started to move toward the downstream region inside the current layer, but the O-point had larger velocity and caught up the preceding X-point within 0.5 μs. The results from Doppler spectroscopy indicated that the ion flow velocity had the intermediate value between the O- and X-point velocities, suggesting that the ions flowed with approximately the same velocity with the magnetic island.journal articl
