NiTi/Pb(Zr₀.₅₂Tiₒ.₄₈)O₃ thin film heterostructures for vibration damping in MEMS
We report on the damping properties of NiTi/Pb(Zr₀.₅₂Tiₒ.₄₈)O₃ (PZT) heterostructures using nanoindentation technique. Creep and impact tests were performed to obtain hardness (H), elastic modulus (Er), damping factor (tan δ) and figure of merit (FOM. A hold time of 30 s during creep test shows significant improvement in damping factor for NiTi/PZT (0.046) and CrTiN/NiTi/PZT (0.050). Impact test demonstrates highest damping capacity with lowest coefficient of restitution (0.30) in CrTiN/NiTi/PZT. Higher hardness (19.8 GPa) and excellent figure of merit (0.751) in CrTiN/NiTi/PZT makes them very attractive damping material for microelectromechanical systems (MEMS).sponsorship: The financial support provided by Department of Information Technology (DIT), India under Nanotechnology Initiative Program with Reference Grant No. 20(11)/2007-VCND and DRDO ARMREB is highly acknowledged. Comparison of changes in vertical dimension of the upper and lower complete dentures processed using two investing methods

sets of dentures were invested by the conventional method and the other seven were invested by a modified
method. In the latter method, the second layer of the investment extended occlusally only up to the
maximum convexity on the labial/buccal and lingual surfaces of the teeth. In the beginning, only the upper
or the lower denture was processed and changes in the vertical dimension of occlusion were measured.
After that, the other denture was also processed and the increase in the vertical dimension of occlusion of
the sets of dentures was measured. All measurements were made at the incisal guide pin using a leaf gauge.
Statistical analysis using t-test showed no difference in the changes of vertical dimension of the dentures
processed by the two different methods of investing. However, both of the methods of investing showed
significantly more increase in vertical dimension of the upper complete dentures than that of the lower complete
dentures

Clinicopathological study on patients presenting with obstructive jaundice
Background: Obstructive jaundice is frequently encountered surgical disease in the practice. This study is aimed to analyse age and sex distribution and incidence of malignant or benign causes in patients presented with obstructive jaundice. Author thoroughly documented various clinical presentations in these patients, evaluated them for stage of disease and appropriate management modality available for that particular stage.Methods: This is observational study carried out in Department of General Surgery, Hamidia hospital Bhopal on 100 patients over period of 18 months from January 2016 to July 2017.Results: Obstructive jaundice is more prevalent in 5th and 6th decade of life and male to female ratio of 2:3. Abdominal pain (97%) and jaundice (81%) are two common presentations. Malignancy (68%) tends to be more common than benign disease (32%) and among malignancies periampullary carcinoma and advanced GB carcinoma occurs with equal frequency of 32 cases. 46% patients of malignant aetiology presented in stage IV disease. Curative resection for periampullary tumours by whipples procedure was possible in 14% patients. Operative palliation by triple bypass was done in 11% and others were managed by appropriate another palliative modality. Adeno-carcinoma is most common histopathological variant. Choledocholithiasis (28%) is most common benign aetiology and was managed successfully by choledocholithotomy and T-tube insertion.Conclusions: Awareness of common presenting symptoms of obstructive jaundice should be done so that the patient present early for diagnosis and curative surgery and thereby prolonged survival rate. Palliative procedures are commoner than curative resection due to late presentation.</jats:p

Comparative Effectiveness and Safety of Rivaroxaban and Warfarin Among Nonvalvular Atrial Fibrillation (NVAF) Patients with Obesity and Polypharmacy in the United States (US)

Introduction: Current evidence indicates that rivaroxaban may be a safe and effective alternative to warfarin among patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) and obesity. However, evidence regarding the impact of polypharmacy is limited in this population. The present study evaluated the effectiveness and safety of rivaroxaban versus warfarin among NVAF patients with obesity and polypharmacy in the US. Methods: De-identified health insurance claims data from the IQVIA PharMetrics® Plus data (01/2010–09/2019) were used to identify NVAF patients with obesity (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2) and polypharmacy (≥ 5 medications) initiated on rivaroxaban or warfarin. Inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW) was used to adjust for imbalances between groups. Study outcomes were evaluated up to 36 months post-treatment initiation and included the composite of stroke or systemic embolism (stroke/SE) and major bleeding. Subgroup analyses were conducted stratified by polypharmacy category (5–9 or ≥ 10 medications). Outcomes were assessed using Cox proportional hazards regression models with hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results: A total of 7000 and 3920 NVAF patients with obesity and polypharmacy were initiated on rivaroxaban and warfarin, respectively. At 36 months of follow-up, rivaroxaban was associated with a 29% lower risk of stroke/SE relative to warfarin (HR 0.71, 95% CI 0.57, 0.90). Major bleeding risk was not significantly different among rivaroxaban- compared to warfarin-treated patients (HR 0.85, 95% CI 0.70, 1.03). Subgroup analyses yielded results that were largely consistent with the overall polypharmacy analysis. Conclusions: These results suggest that rivaroxaban is an effective and safe treatment option among NVAF patients with obesity and polypharmacy in a commercially-insured US population
Exploring nutritional supplement use for countering respiratory tract infections through an X (formerly Twitter)-based survey
Background: Respiratory tract infections are a common health issue, driving interest in preventive strategies like nutritional supplements, while evidence on their usage and effectiveness remains limited. In this context, social media platforms, particularly X (formerly Twitter), provide a unique opportunity to gather large-scale public health-related data. Objectives: In this study, we aimed to survey participants’ uses and opinions on nutritional supplements in prevention or treatment of respiratory tract infections, by using X. Methods: A survey was conducted between 1st and 15th December 2022. A single open-ended question “Which are the best dietary supplements to counteract respiratory infections?“ was asked. One week after the start of the survey, a poll was posted to get more relevant information and boost the survey's reach. Total endorsements were calculated for each tweet posted as the total sum of replies, retweets, and likes. Results: The open-ended question received a total of 118 retweets, 39 quotes, and 371 likes, while the poll received 56 retweets, 13 quotes, and 67 likes. A total of 495 replies, 2,251 retweets, 5,118 likes, and 148 quotes were received for the question and its related tweets. Vitamin D (1,607 endorsements), zinc (1,347 endorsements), vitamin C (803 endorsements), magnesium (694 endorsements), and honey (661 endorsements) were the nutritional supplements that received most endorsements. Conclusion: Various foods, drinks, and natural ingredients have been suggested as potentially helpful for counteracting respiratory infections. Approximately half of respondents indicated using such supplements for themselves. The result of this study supports the idea that the X platform can be used as an effective survey tool to study global health-related behaviours and trends
