Concentration in Knowledge Output: A case of Economics Journals

    No full text
This paper assesses the degree of author concentration in seven economics journals, which were published in India during 1990-2002. To measure the degree of author concentration, Lotka's Law was used. Moreover, we also make an exploratory analysis of the geographic, economics subfield and institutional concentration in 704 economics journals. An important finding of this paper is that specialized journals in the sample report the highest degree of author concentration. This result is quite similar to the findings by Cox and Chung (1991). Furthermore, there are several instances showing that the journals lean towards certain norms; this may affect the flow of innovative ideas into economics. We conclude that a knowledge activity, involving the high degree of concentration and a biased publication process, may affect the flow of new ideas into the discipline.Concentration, Lotka's Law

Endoparasites of Wild Mammals Sheltered in Wildlife Hospitals and Rehabilitation Centres in Greece

    No full text
Wildlife parasitic diseases represent an important field of investigation as they may have a significant impact on wild animals’ health and fitness, and may also have zoonotic implications. This study aimed to investigate the occurrence of endoparasites in wild mammals admitted to wildlife hospitals and rehabilitation centres in Greece. Sixty-five animals belonging to 17 species and originated from various areas of continental and insular Greece were included in the survey. The most numerous animal species examined were hedgehogs (n = 19), red foxes (n = 16), and European roe deer (n = 6). Faecal samples were collected individually and examined by floatation and sedimentation method. Parasites were found in 46 (70.7%) of the animals. Most parasites found in canids, felids, and ruminants are of great relevance to the domestic animals’ health and some of them are also of zoonotic importance. To the best of the author’s knowledge, this is the first report of endoparasites in hedgehogs, roe deers, fallow deers, badgers, and bats, and the first report of the pulmonary nematode Troglostrongylus brevior in a wild cat in Greece. The significance of the parasites found in each animal species in regard to their health and their relevance to domestic animals and human health is discussed

Concentration in Knowledge Output:A Case of Economics Journals

Journals moderate knowledge activity in economics. The activity of publishing article in professional journal forms significant part of knowledge output. Output of economics articles has been growing over the time. We examine an important question: Is there any case of institutional or location concentration in knowledge production? This paper analyses concentration indicators specific to economics journals and explores link between publication process and concentration. The analysis of various concentration measures present evidence for institutional-geographic-area-author concentration in Knowledge production in Economics. High concentration levels indicate possibility of institutional lock-in. The literature provides evidence for myopic refereeing, editorial favouritism and the presence of ‘lock-in’ effect. The achievement in journal publication is influenced by factors like institutional affiliation, propitious circumstances etc. Discussion carried out in this paper hints the possibility of causal link between unfair process and unfair outcome.Knowledge,Lotka's Law,Fourier Series

Approximate order-k Voronoi cells over positional streams

    No full text
Handling streams of positional updates from numerous moving ob-jects has become a challenging task for many monitoring applica-tions. Several algorithms have been recently proposed for provid-ing exact answers particularly to continuous range and k-nearest neighbor queries against current object positions. In this work, we introduce a processing technique for efficiently maintaining an ap-proximate order-k Voronoi cell around a certain point of interest when all objects continuously change their locations. This heuristic can easily provide a fairly reliable estimate of the k-nearest neigh-bors for any query point found inside the constructed cell. We fur-ther extend our method to handle positional updates that are not received concurrently for all objects, but instead remain valid for a specific time interval according to a sliding window model. Ex-tensive experimental analysis over synthetic datasets confirms the robustness and scalability of this approach offering near real-time cell maintenance with acceptable error margins

Adsorption and Absorption Energies of Hydrogen with Palladium

[Image: see text] Thermal recombinative desorption rates of HD on Pd(111) and Pd(332) are reported from transient kinetic experiments performed between 523 and 1023 K. A detailed kinetic model accurately describes the competition between recombination of surface-adsorbed hydrogen and deuterium atoms and their diffusion into the bulk. By fitting the model to observed rates, we derive the dissociative adsorption energies (E(0, ads)(H(2)) = 0.98 eV; E(0, ads)(D(2)) = 1.00 eV; E(0, ads)(HD) = 0.99 eV) as well as the classical dissociative binding energy ϵ(ads) = 1.02 ± 0.03 eV, which provides a benchmark for electronic structure theory. In a similar way, we obtain the classical energy required to move an H or D atom from the surface to the bulk (ϵ(sb) = 0.46 ± 0.01 eV) and the isotope specific energies, E(0, sb)(H) = 0.41 eV and E(0, sb)(D) = 0.43 eV. Detailed insights into the process of transient bulk diffusion are obtained from kinetic Monte Carlo simulations

MEMOIRS OF MARMARA ISLAND BY LAMBRINOS K. DIMARCHOPOULOS, 1821-1866

Δεν διατίθεται περίληψη στα ελληνικά.The paper presents for the first time the whole of Lambrinos K. Dimarchopoulos’ memoirs written between 1821 and 1866 in Marmara town of Marmara Island in Propontis. The manuscript of Dimarchopoulos passed to his son Konstantinos L. Dimarchopoulos who was living in Istanbul until his death in 1930. However, the text we possess is the one copied by Theofanis S. Theofanidis, who also originates from Marmara Island, at the house of K. L. Dimarchopoulos in 1927. There is no infor¬mation about the luck of the original manuscript since 1930. Lambrinos Dimarchopoulos most likely was a member of the council of Marmara and wrote down various events and administrative notes. Among them stand out the references to the Greek Revolution, to the reconstruc¬tion of churches and monasteries of the island, to taxes, population and other financial data as well as to facts related to the occupations of the inhabitants of the island. The content of Dimarchopoulos’ memoirs is of particular importance because they contain evidence that shed light on different aspects of the history and culture of Marmara and the sur¬rounding region mainly in the Tanzimat period

Delineation of management zones in an apple orchard: Correlations between yield and soil properties

    No full text
In the present paper the yield and soil spatial variability in an apple orchard was studied. Apples were collected manually and placed in plastic bins along the tree rows. Yield per ten trees was weighted and the geographical position in the centre of the ten trees was recorded, using a GPS, in order to create the yield map. The orchard was divided in management zones with the Management Zone Analyst (MZA) software, based on the yield map. In each zone soil samples were taken and analysed for the following characteristics: soil texture (% sand, % silt and % clay), pH, nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and organic matter (OM) content. The correlation between yield and soil properties was performed in all zones. The results showed significant variability in yield and some soil properties. Yield was negatively correlated with pH, clay, organic matter, and CaCO3
