    Humanizing Mathematics: An Amalgamation of Constructionist Theory and Situated Cognition in the Mathematics Classroom

    A primary contributor to facilitating student learning in mathematics includes the mathematics teacher. The design of instructional delivery, presentation of engaging activities and analysis of student feedback are the key responsibilities that mathematics teachers are tasked with in order to present learning opportunities to the students. The approach to satisfying these responsibilities is contingent on the teachers' values and beliefs regarding the various aspects of mathematical proficiency. In this study, I have investigated teachers' valuation of two of these aspects: procedural fluency and conceptual understanding. The literature on these two aspects of mathematical proficiency has focused almost exclusively on elementary teachers. Research studies have uncovered a proclivity of elementary teachers toward procedural learning despite the abstract nature of mathematical processes. Elementary teachers have been found to possess a certain aversion toward a deeper conceptual understanding of mathematics. With regard to secondary teachers, the research is more focused on instructional strategies that emphasize mathematical concepts, but neglect the relationship that these concepts may have to the robust procedures that allow students to process known values as they attempt to discover solutions to both prescribed and unique problems. This study examined the values that secondary teachers place upon two learning constructs within the framework of mathematical proficiency, and how these values influence their approach to teaching. "How do secondary mathematics teachers value procedural fluency and conceptual understanding in their instructional practices?" is the fundamental question of this study. The study reaches beyond this initial question to also examine the root causes of the establishment of these values by asking "how do teachers develop their value-system of procedural fluency and conceptual understanding in their instructional practices?". This study consisted of two phases. In phase one, teachers completed a 27-item survey instrument in order to gather responses about their beliefs regarding conceptual understanding, procedural fluency and a blend of the two constructs.     Macrophages and T regulatory cells: immune mediators of allogeneic and xenogeneic Sertoli cells

    There is a critical shortage of organ donors available for clinical transplantation and recipients rely on toxic life-long immunosuppression to prevent allograft rejection. Xenotransplantation could alleviate this shortage however one substantial barrier is rapid tissue rejection. Therefore, ways to improve both allo- and xeno-transplantation survival with decreased immunosuppression are vastly needed. Immune privileged Sertoli cells (SCs) survive long term post allo- and xeno-transplantation without immunosuppression and protect co-transplanted issue from immune rejection. Based on these findings, we are working to uncover the underlying mechanisms utilized by SCs to evade both allo- and xeno-geneic rejection. Our long term goal is to exploit these mechanisms to improve clinical transplantation survival with little to no need for immunosuppression and to advance the efficacy of xenotransplantation as a solution to the recipient donor disparity. Previously, SC allo- or xeno-grafts collected between days 1-20 post transplantation were analyzed for differences in the immune response. In both models, SCs established an anti-inflammatory environment compared to the rejected controls. Macrophages were the main infiltrating immune cells and T regs, known to induce graft tolerance, appeared early and later in the xeno- and allo-grafts, respectively. In this study, we identified T regs in our xenotransplantation model for the first time. Interestingly, we found that xenogeneic SCs inhibit both alterative and classical pathways of complement mediated cell lysis prior to graft infiltration of T regs. Furthermore, significantly more M2 or anti-inflammatory macrophages were present early in the SC allografts and following macrophage depletion, 33% of the normally rejected control allografts survived without immunosuppression. Conversely, SC survival was not affected following macrophage depletion. Altogether, this suggests that SCs survive by establishing graft tolerance early through adaptive (T regs) immune responses post allo- and xeno-transplantation. Specifically, in the xenotransplantation model it suggests that complement inhibition plays a significant role in mediating graft survival. Overall these data implicate T regs as important immune cells mediating SC survival in both models and macrophages in control allograft rejection. The role of macrophages in SC grafts remains unclear and requires additional study. Future studies will identify M2 macrophages in SC xenografts and evaluate xenograft survival following macrophage depletion. Allograft survival will also be evaluated following either M1 (proinflammatory) or M2 specific macrophage depletion. Ultimately, these mechanisms will advance our knowledge regarding ways to improve both allo- and xeno-graft survival with less need for immunosuppression and bring xenotransplantation practices closer to fruition.Restricted until January 2025

    Actualistic studies of the spatial and temporal distribution of terrestrial and aquatic organism traces in continental environments to differentiate lacustrine from fluvial, eolian, and marine deposits in the geologic record

    Actualistic studies of modern continental environments and the spatial and temporal distribution of terrestrial and aquatic organisms are summarized and synthesized to understand how to better interpret the significance of trace fossils to differentiate lacustrine from fluvial, eolian, and marine deposits in the geologic record. The purpose of this approach is to develop an understanding of the physicochemical factors that control the occurrence, diversity, abundance, and tiering of organism behavior and parallels what is known for benthic and other trace-making organisms in marine environments. The distribution of traces observed in Lake Tanganyika and Lake Eyre, an overfilled lake in a tropical rift basin setting and an underfilled lake in an arid midlatitude ephemeral playa setting, respectively, are described, synthesized, and compared with the Mermia, Coprinisphaera, Termitichnus, Skolithos, and Scoyenia ichnofacies models proposed for continental environments. The comparisons show that all the models are inappropriate for the fluvial-lacustrine settings of Lake Tanganyika and Lake Eyre because the models do not support the environmental uniqueness or distinctive collection of traces across these environments, nor do they provide sufficient interpretive power. The multiple ichnocoenoses for each subenvironment observed in the balanced-filled and underfilled lacustrine systems more accurately record the environmental uniqueness and distinctive collection of traces found in each environment. Ichnocoenoses are better suited for continental depositional systems and their environments because they reflect the nature of processes and distribution of life in continental settings, which are inherently heterogeneous spatially and temporally. Ichnocoenoses also provide sufficient interpretive power for trace-fossil associations formed under different physicochemical conditions for each type of environment. General trends in trace-fossil diversity, abundance, distribution, and tiering are predicted for alluvial (fluvial), lacustrine, and eolian environments so that new models based on the distribution of ichnocoenoses and their sedimentary and pedogenic characteristics from outcrop and core can be constructed.Stephen T.     Disorders of smell are rare, particularly in pediatric patients. The most common cause of transient anosmia is nasal obstruction associated with upper respiratory infections. Moreover, nasal polyps, nasal and nasopharyngeal tumors, and enlarged adenoids can cause obstruction of the nasal air circulation and thereby diminish the sense of smell. Anosmia can often be difficult to confirm, particularly if a pediatric patient has true anosmia. Many children with olfactory dysfunction may not recognize their deficits, or often pretend to smell to please their parents, or prevaricate to attract attention. Moreover, long, complex olfactory tests are impractical owing to the short attention span of some young children, and are further limited because odor concepts require experience with odors that some children have yet to come across

    November 2015 Paris terrorist attacks and social media use : preliminary findings from authorities, critical infrastructure operators and journalists

    Crisis communication is a key component of an effective emergency response. Social media has evolved as a prominent crisis communication tool. This paper reports how social media was used by authorities, critical infrastructure operators and journalists during the terrorist attacks that hit Paris on 13th November 2015. A qualitative study was conducted between January and February 2017 employing semi-structured interviews with seven relevant stakeholders involved in this communication process. The preliminary critical thematic analysis revealed four main themes which are reported in the results section: (1) social media is used in crisis times; (2) authorities gained situational awareness via social media; (3) citizens used social media to help one another; and (4) communication procedures changed after these critical events. In conclusion, authorities, citizens and journalists all turned to social media during the attack, both for crisis communication and for increasing situational awareness
