A Review of silicon carbide development in MEMS applications

    No full text
Due to its desirable material properties, Silicon Carbide (SiC) hasbecome an alternative material to replace Si for MicroelectromechanicalSystems (MEMS) applications in harsh environments. To promote SiC MEMSdevelopment towards future cost-effective products, main technology areas inmaterial deposition and processes have attracted significant interest. Thedevelopments in these areas have contributed to the rapid emergence of SiCMEMS prototypes. In this paper, we give an overview of the importantdevelopments in SiC material formation and fabrication processes in recentyears. Some of the most interesting state-of-the-art SiC MEMS devices arereviewed. This highlights the major progresses in SiC MEMS developed thusfar. This paper also looks into the prospect of SiC MEMS drawing attention topotential issues

Decomposing time series data by a non-negative matrix factorization algorithm with temporally constrained coefficients

    No full text
The non-negative matrix factorization algorithm (NMF) decomposes a data matrix into a set of non-negative basis vectors, each scaled by a coefficient. In its original formulation, the NMF assumes the data samples and dimensions to be independently distributed, making it a lessthan-ideal algorithm for the analysis of time series data with temporal correlations. Here, we seek to derive an NMF that accounts for temporal dependencies in the data by explicitly incorporating a very simple temporal constraint for the coefficients into the NMF update rules. We applied the modified algorithm to 2 multi-dimensional electromyographic data sets collected from the human upper-limb to identify muscle synergies. We found that because it reduced the number of free parameters in the model, our modified NMF made it possible to use the Akaike Information Criterion to objectively identify a model order (i.e., the number of muscle synergies composing the data) that is more functionally interpretable, and closer to the numbers previously determined using ad hoc measures

Structure of human mitochondrial RNA polymerase elongation complex

    No full text
Here we report the crystal structure of the human mitochondrial RNA polymerase (mtRNAP) transcription elongation complex, determined at 2.65-Å resolution. The structure reveals a 9-bp hybrid formed between the DNA template and the RNA transcript and one turn of DNA both upstream and downstream of the hybrid. Comparisons with the distantly related RNA polymerase (RNAP) from bacteriophage T7 indicates conserved mechanisms for substrate binding and nucleotide incorporation but also strong mechanistic differences. Whereas T7 RNAP refolds during the transition from initiation to elongation, mtRNAP adopts an intermediary conformation that is capable of elongation without refolding. The intercalating hairpin that melts DNA during T7 RNAP initiation separates RNA from DNA during mtRNAP elongation. Newly synthesized RNA exits toward the pentatricopeptide repeat (PPR) domain, a unique feature of mtRNAP with conserved RNA-recognition motifs
