Variants of a selection principle for sequences of regulated and non-regulated functions

Let TT be a nonempty subset of \RB, XX a metric space with metric dd and XTX^T the set of all functions mapping TT into XX. Given \vep>0 and fXTf\in X^T, we denote by N(\vep,f,T) the least upper bound of those n\in\NB, for which there exist numbers s1,,sn,t1,,tns_1,\dots,s_n,t_1,\dots,t_n from TT such that s1<t1s2<t2sn<tns_1<t_1\le s_2<t_2\le\dots\le s_n<t_n and d(f(s_i),f(t_i))>\vep for all i=1,,ni=1,\dots,n (N(\vep,f,T)=0 if there are no such nn's). The following pointwise selection principle is proved: {\em If a sequence of functions\/ {fj}j=1XT\{f_j\}_{j=1}^\infty\subset X^T is such that the closure in XX of the sequence\/ {fj(t)}j=1\{f_j(t)\}_{j=1}^\infty is compact for each tTt\in T and\/ \limsup_{j\to\infty}N(\vep,f_j,T)<\infty for all \vep>0, then\/ {fj}j=1\{f_j\}_{j=1}^\infty contains a subsequence, converging pointwise on TT to a function fXTf\in X^T, such that N(\vep,f,T)0}. We establish several variants of this result for functions with values in a metric semigroup and reflexive separable Banach space as well as for the weak pointwise and almost everywhere convergence of extracted subsequences, and comment on the necessity of conditions in the selection principles. We show that many Helly-type pointwise selection principles are consequences of our results, which can be applied to sequences of non-regulated functions, and compare them with recent results by Chistyakov [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 310 (2005) 609--625] and Chistyakov and Maniscalco [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 341 (2008) 613--625]

A pointwise selection principle for metric semigoup valued functions

    No full text
    Let \emptyset\neq T \subset \RB, \hspace{.1in} (X,d,+) be an additive commutative semigroup with metric dd satisfying d(x+z,y+z)=d(x,y)d(x+z,y+z)=d(x,y) for all x,y,zX,x,y,z \in X, and XTX^T the set of all functions from TT into XX. If n \in \NB and f,gXTf,g \in X^T, we set ν(n,f,g,T)=supi=1nd(f(ti)+g(si),g(ti)+f(si))\nu (n,f,g,T) = \sup \sum _{i=1} ^{n} d(f(t_i)+g(s_i), g(t_i)+f(s_i)), where the supremum is taken over all numbers s1,...,sn,t1,....,tns_1,...,s_n,t_1,....,t_n from TT such that s1t1s2t2...sntn.s_1 \leq t_1 \leq s_2 \leq t_2 \leq ...\leq s_n \leq t_n. We prove the following pointwise selection theorem: \textit{If a sequence of functions \{f_j\}_{j \in \NB} \subset X^T is such that the closure in XX of the set \{f_j(t)\}_{j \in \NB} is compact for each t \in T, and limn(1nlimNsupj,kN,jKν(n,fj,fk,T))=0,\lim_{n\rightarrow \infty}(\frac{1}{n} \lim_{N\rightarrow \infty} \sup_{j,k\geq N, j \neq K} \nu (n,f_j,f_k,T)) = 0, then it contains a subsequence which converges pointwise on TT.} We show by examples that this result is sharp and present two of its variants

Dante as an “Existential Teacher”: Franco Nembrini and Fr. Georgy Chistyakov on Dante

    Get PDF
The article examines the phenomenon of Dante’s impact on the modern reader. The author of the article claims that the main reason for Dante’s continuing allure despite the seven centuries that have elapsed since his day and the considerable complexity of his chef d’oeuvre Divine Comedy is the fact that he addresses all readers and their personalities, on the one hand, and the notion of the poet as a prophet and an existential teacher, on the other. The article examines the literary principles and techniques used by Dante to carry out his mission of an “existential teacher” for new generations of readers. To illustrate this thesis, the author analyzes two recent books about Dante written by the Italian pedagogue Franco Nembrini and the Russian philologist, historian and priest Fr. Georgy Chistyakov, who perceived Dante in a very similar way as an existential teacher and his Divine Comedy as an inexhaustible source of human stories and situations that help the reader to make the right choice and as a guide to life that saves one from getting lost in the “dark forest” and that remains topical in all times

Maps of several variables of finite total variation. I. Mixed differences and the total variation

AbstractGiven two points a=(a1,…,an) and b=(b1,…,bn) from Rn with a<b componentwise and a map f from the rectangle Iab=[a1,b1]×⋯×[an,bn] into a metric semigroup M=(M,d,+), we study properties of the total variation TV(f,Iab) of f on Iab introduced by the first author in [V.V. Chistyakov, A selection principle for mappings of bounded variation of several variables, in: Real Analysis Exchange 27th Summer Symposium, Opava, Czech Republic, 2003, pp. 217–222] such as the additivity, generalized triangle inequality and sequential lower semicontinuity. This extends the classical properties of C. Jordan's total variation (n=1) and the corresponding properties of the total variation in the sense of Hildebrandt [T.H. Hildebrandt, Introduction to the Theory of Integration, Academic Press, 1963] (n=2) and Leonov [A.S. Leonov, On the total variation for functions of several variables and a multidimensional analog of Helly's selection principle, Math. Notes 63 (1998) 61–71] (n∈N) for real-valued functions of n variables
