Tribute to Kay Boyle
for Ian Under a bright San Francisco starI earned my MA in Creative Writing at San Francisco State in 1968. I had the good fortune to have Kay Boyle standing in my proverbial corner. Kay is (I use the present tense because, once set down, literature is here to stay) an amazingly accomplished and well-versed author with some 40 published books to round out her long lifetime (1902-1992). The kaon semileptonic form factor with near physical domain wall quarks
We present a new calculation of the K → π semileptonic form factor at zero momentum transfer in domain wall lattice QCD with N f = 2+1 dynamical quark flavours. By using partially twisted boundary conditions we simulate directly at the phenomenologically relevant point of zero momentum transfer. We perform a joint analysis for all available ensembles which include three different lattice spacings (a = 0.09 - 0.14 fm), large physical volumes (m π L > 3.9) and pion masses as low as 171 MeV. The comprehensive set of simulation points allows for a detailed study of systematic effects leading to the prediction f+Kπ(0)=0.9670(20) (-46+18), where the first error is statistical and the second error systematic. The result allows us to extract the CKM-matrix element | Vu|=0.2237(-8+13) and confirm first-row CKM-unitarity in the Standard Model at the sub per mille level. © 2013 SISSA, Trieste, Italy.RBC/UKQCD collaboration, P.A. Kirsty Boyle (Art Forum)
Kirsty Boyle will give an introduction & then an overview of the world of Karakuri from ancient Japan to Sony robots. Japan’s love of robots lies in the history of the ‘Karakuri Ningyo’. Karakuri = a mechanical device to tease, trick, or take a person by surprise. It implies hidden magic, or an element of mystery.
Boyle will also be discussing new media robot culture & some recent projects – 'tree ceremony', commissioned by the Museum Tinguely & Kunsthaus Graz for the Robot Dreams exhibition touring 2010 – 2011; ‘love the robots’ - a showcase combining media art, network performance, informal lecture & discussion centered around the theme of robots, contemporary art, culture & society and 'ocean of air', a collaboration with UN climate change scientist Ramon Guardans & Tega Brain.
Kirsty Boyle is an Australian artist whose passion for robots has driven her to travel the world in order to work with other like-minded artists & scientists. The historical & cultural aspects of science in society continue to be a major theme that informs her artistic practice. During 2002, Kirsty began study under Mr Tamaya Shobei, a ninth generation Karakuri Ningyo craftsman & last remaining mechanical doll Master in Japan. She is currently his only student, & the only woman to have ever been trained in the tradition.
Her practice is truly interdisciplinary, encompassing skills in sculpture, theatrical performance, film & animation, digital arts & design, mechanical & electrical engineering & artificial intelligence
Marching the Streets of San Francisco With Novelist and Activist, Kay Boyle
In this wonderfully vivid piece, originally published in 2013 and now posted on LitHub, Marianne Goldsmith tells about marching the streets of San Francisco with Kay Boyle in the early 1970s. The author says she was inspired to revive it after the Jan 6th riot in Washington, D.C. Genius eclipsed: the fate of Robert Boyle
The article focuses on 17th century British natural philosopher and scientist Robert Boyle. The author explores Boyle's relationship with contemporary scientist Sir Isaac Newton and considers why Newton, as opposed to Boyle, remained famous. The author explores the importance of Boyle's writings including "Of the Usefulness of Natural Philosophy," "Sceptical Chymist," and "Experiments and Considerations Touching Colours." The article also considers subjects including English polymath Robert Hooke, the Royal Society of London, and Boyle's Law about the relationship between the volume of a gas and its pressure
Understanding the Issues in Inclusive Education: Working Towards Equitable and Accessible Education for All Students
Understanding the issues that can affect successful inclusive education implementation is crucial in order to be successful. The focus of this chapter is around teachers’ attitudes to inclusion and their involvement in programme development. Often teachers are left out of discussions and inclusive education can be thrust upon them without adequate resourcing. There is evidence that by involving teaching staff, there is more chance of the inclusive programme being successful and meaningful. In this chapter Michael Lipsky’s pioneering sociological work on street-level bureaucrats is linked to inclusion policy and teacher willingness to engage with the approach. There is no doubt that inclusion is a perennially interesting and challenging subject in education. There are many chapters in this volume which consider various issues such as: student teacher perspectives, social inclusion, serious mental health issues, and teacher attitudes to inclusion. The topic of inclusion is now wide and varied, and this volume encapsulates the range of contemporary arguments and ensures that the reader is engaged on this journey.Christopher Boyle, Kelly-Ann Alle
Attracting and retraining talent: lessons for Scottish policy makers from the experiences of scottish expatriates in Dublin
With a view to contributing research of value to the Fresh Talent Scotland Initiative, this research project has been devised with specific reference to the first of the three goals noted above. Specifically, it is concerned with gaining insights into why talented individuals leave Scotland in the first instance, and thereafter to ascertain whether anything might be done to both stem the outflow and lure back to Scotland some of its most talented diasporeans. Such a goal in turn begets, it will be argued, greater insights into the actual experiences of contemporary diasporeans in the run up to migration and whilst in exile. Using one emerging magnet for Scottish expatriates as a case study, the Republic of Ireland and more specifically Dublin, the project seeks to examine the embroilment of skilled Scottish expatriates in the so called Celtic Tiger phenomenon. The basic purpose of this report is to present insights into the decision making processes that have led migrants to leave Scotland and to move to Dublin, to gain an appreciation of what life has been like for expatriates living in Dublin and what Scotland might learn from these experiences, and finally to review future locational preferences with a view to establishing whether a return to Scotland may be a possibility
