“Dig where you stand” 5. Proceedings of the fifth International Conference on the History of Mathematics Education
The First International Conference on the History of Mathematics Education took place
in Iceland in 2009. In the Proceedings, the editors expressed their expectation that the
research on history of mathematics education would be sufficiently productive to warrant
the continuation of this conference every two years. And indeed, participation has grown,
from 35 participants and 18 presentations in 2009, to 65 participants and 40 presentations
in 2017, at the Fifth International Conference on the History of Mathematics Education.
The venue of the Fifth Conference was the historical University Hall of the University of Utrecht
in the Netherlands. The Descartes Centre and the Freudenthal Institute, both part of the University
of Utrecht, and the Dutch Association of Mathematics Teachers sponsored the organisation and
the Proceedings of the conference. The Local Committee, consisting of Heleen van der Ree,
Harm Jan Smid, Jan van Guichelaar and Jenneke Krüger, organized the conference in an excellent
manner. The final editing of the Proceedings was in the capable hands of Nathalie Kuijper

Relationship between the quality of sleep and the amount of working hours among employees of the General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union during the COVID-19 epidemic
The COVID-19 epidemic has left an evident mark on society. The consequences are evident when looking at people’s mental health, and employees’ sleep and work patterns. The goal of the research is to examine the quality of sleep and mental health of employees at the General Secretariat of the Council of European Union in connection with different work factors that have a potential influence on sleep and mental health. 201 participants (62.2 % women, 36.8 % men, 1 % unspecified) from different directorates of the previously mentioned organisation have participated in answering a set of questions for the purpose of which we used The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), to assess the general quality of sleep, and added two additional questions. To assess symptoms of anxiety we used The General Anxiety Disorder-7 scale (GAD-7), and to assess the level of fatigue due to the use of web-based tools we used The Zoom Exhaustion & Fatigue Scale (ZEF). A key finding of our research is that there exists a relation between the quality of sleep and severity of anxiety related feelings, and the quality of sleep and fatigue due to the use of web-based tools for conducting videoconferences. On the other hand, there is also a relation between severity of anxiety related feelings and the fatigue due to the use of web-based tools for conducting videoconferences, and the quality of sleep and the level of connection with the work after workhours. These findings can serve as a basis for further research of sleep as well as establishment of guidelines, which would contribute, towards the improvement of sleep quality and mental health of the employees

A general method for selection of riboflavin-overproducing food grade micro-organisms
peer-reviewedBackground: This study describes a strategy to select and isolate spontaneous riboflavin-overproducing strains of Lactobacillus (Lb.) plantarum, Leuconostoc (Lc.) mesenteroides and Propionibacterium (P.) freudenreichii. Results: The toxic riboflavin analogue roseoflavin was used to isolate natural riboflavin-overproducing variants of the food grade micro-organisms Lb. plantarum, Lc. mesenteroides and P. freudenreichii strains. The method was successfully employed for strains of all three species. The mutation(s) responsible for the observed overproduction of riboflavin were identified for isolates of two species. Conclusion: Selection for spontaneous roseoflavin-resistant mutants was found to be a reliable method to obtain natural riboflavin-overproducing strains of a number of species commonly used in the food industry. This study presents a convenient method for deriving riboflavin-overproducing strains of bacterial starter cultures, which are currently used in the food industry, by a non-recombinant methodology. Use of such starter strains can be exploited to increase the vitamin content in certain food products.European Union project QLK1-CT-2000-01376 (Nutra Cells

A Qualitative Study on a Process of Parents’ Acceptance of Children’s Severe Motor and Intellectual Disabilities (SMID)
The purpose of this paper was to generate viewpoints on how parents acknowledge and accept children with severe motor and intellectual disabilities (SMID) by interviewing eight parents with children who have SMID. The author used a basic principle of a paper-based MAXqda to examine the process and analyze the interview data. The result of the analysis indicated that six concepts were found concerning parents’ acceptance of children with SMID: complaint of medical care, learning of child-raising skills by mothers, support by families, differences in ways of thinking between husbands and wives, reference group members, and generation gaps.
When parents had children with SMID, it was meaningful to have groups to rely on. In particular, the author found three viewpoints. First, parents’ sharing their suffering or joy with other parents who had SMID led to a positive way of thinking. Second, once the parents became connected with other parents, they established a network.
Then, the network was reinforced and deployed as activities of a peer group. Third, the parents tried to change the system which contradicted the reality by using the network established.departmental bulletin pape
Molecular mechanisms underlying the synergistic interaction of erlotinib, an epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor, with the multitargeted antifolate pemetrexed in non-small-cell lung cancer cells
Because the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitor erlotinib and the multitargeted antifolate pemetrexed are registered in the treatment of second-line non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC), empirical combinations of these drugs are being tested. This study investigated molecular mechanisms underlying their combination in six NSCLC cell lines. Cells were characterized by heterogeneous expression of pemetrexed determinants, including thymidylate synthase (TS) and dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR), and mutations potentially affecting chemosensitivity. Pharmacological interaction was studied using the combination index (CI) method, whereas cell cycle, apoptosis induction, and EGFR, extracellular signal-regulated kinases 1 and 2, and Akt phosphorylation were studied by flow cytometry, fluorescence microscopy, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. Reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), Western blot, and activity assays were performed to assess whether erlotinib influenced TS. 3-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium assays demonstrated that EGFR and k-Ras mutations were related to erlotinib sensitivity, whereas TS and DHFR expression were related to pemetrexed sensitivity. Synergistic cytotoxicity was found in all cells, most pronounced with pemetrexed + erlotinib (24 h) --> erlotinib (48 h) sequence (CI, 0.09-0.40), which was associated with a significant induction of apoptosis. Pemetrexed increased EGFR phosphorylation and reduced Akt phosphorylation, which was additionally reduced by drug combination (-70.6% in H1650). Erlotinib significantly reduced TS expression and activity, possibly via E2F-1 reduction, as detected by RT-PCR and Western blot, and the combination decreased TS in situ activity in all cells. Erlotinib and pemetrexed showed a strong synergism in NSCLC cells, regardless of their genetic characteristics. Induction of apoptosis, modulation of EGFR and Akt phosphorylation, and changes in the expression of critical genes involved in pemetrexed activity contribute to this synergistic interaction and support the clinical investigation of these markers
Dietary polyphenols as inhibitors of Beta-amyloid-evoked neurotoxicity: implications for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease
Many polyphenolic compounds derived from plant products have demonstrated neuroprotective properties in variety of in vitro and in vivo settings. Much of these protective effects are ascribed to an antioxidant capacity, but there are additional properties of some types of polyphenols to afford a more direct form of neuronal protection. With a focus on neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD), the additional actions of polyphenols have been ascribed to the activation of neuronal protective mechanisms or via direct interaction with the toxic beta-amyloid (Aβ) protein associated with Alzheimer’s pathology, or a combination of both. This review highlights recent findings on the pathways of neuroprotection employed by bioactive polyphenols which may directly interface with Aβ fibril and aggregate formation, such as the green tea flavonoid (–)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) and the phytoalexin resveratrol. Targeted studies on the biomolecular interactions between such polyphenolics and Aβ may enable not just an improved understanding of the role of β- amyloid in neurodegenerative diseases, but also offer a new horizon to the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and other amyloidoses.Scott D.
