The aim of our study was to investigate the contribution of CT angiography in cases with a presumptive PTE diagnosis, evaluating lower extremity veins with CT venography and color Doppler ultrasonography (CDU) and the role of these methods at diagnosis of DVT. 46 patients with presumptive diagnosis of PTE which was confirmed with a positive CT angiography (CTA) were included in the study. Lower extremities between the iliac crest and head of femur and the popliteal region were scanned having 17-18 slices from each area, without administring extra contrast medium with a 0.8 mm slice gap. The patients underwent lower extremity CDU on the same day. Four out of 46 patients were shown to have thrombus by CDU while their CTV were normal. Two of them had an appearance of thrombus on CTV while their CDU were normal. When we consider CDU as the gold standard method, the sensitivity of CTV is calculated as 81.8% and the specificity as 91.6%. Kappa value between two modalities was calculated as 0.738 and a consistency of 87% is found. Mean radiation dose was calculated as 2.43 mSv for CTA and 0.457 mSv for CTV. With the imaging technique so-called combined CTA-indirect CTV method, DVT can be determined with moderate sensitivity and high specificity with application of low dose extra radiation

    Inflammatory conditions of the kidney

The diagnosis of renal inflammatory diseases is primarily based on a combination of clinical and laboratory findings such as bacteriuria, pyuria, positive urine culture, and leukocytosis. In general, imaging is not required for diagnosis and treatment of uncomplicated infections in adult patients. However, patients suspected of having an acute renal infection and those who are not responding to intravenous antibiotic treatment within 72 h require imaging. Imaging of urinary tract infection (UTI) in children is more important than in adults because of the much higher potential for significant irreversible renal damage with sequelae of hypertension and chronic renal failure. © Springer-Verlag London 2013

Lemierre's syndrome associated with septic pulmonary embolism: A case report

    No full text
An 18-year-old female patient suffering from a painful right-sided neck mass was admitted to our emergency service. Computed tomography of the neck revealed thrombosis of the right internal jugular vein. Computed tomography of the chest indicated septic pulmonary emboli in both lungs. Blood and oropharyngeal cultures showed proteus that was sensitive to cefepime and amicasin. Chemotherapy was administered for 12 days, however, her complaints continued with fulminant progression. An urgent decompression and excessive debridement were performed. Although Lemierre syndrome is a well-known cause of internal jugular vein thrombosis, association with proteus culture is very rare

Retroperitoneal lymphangiectasia associated with mediastinal extension: Radiologic findings

Renal lymphangiectasia is a very rare entity. This disorder characterized by developmental malformation of the lymphatic system surrounding the kidneys. A few cases with the retroperitoneal and mediastinal lymphangiectasia reported in the literature. We present the case of an 18-year-old male with retroperitoneal lymphangiectasia and mediastinal extension who presented with abdominal pain. Ultrasonography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging findings are described. © 2007 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved

Percutaneous treatment of liver hydatid cysts: Comparison of direct injection of albendazole and hypertonic saline solution

OBJECTIVE. The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of intracystic injection of albendazole and hypertonic saline in patients with liver hydatid disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Fifty-nine patients with a total of 109 hydatid cysts were treated percutaneously. In all cases, local anesthesia was applied. Twenty percent hypertonic saline was used in 31 patients (40 cysts, group 1) as the scolicidal agent, and albendazole solution was used in 28 patients (69 cysts, group 2). The PAIR (percutaneous puncture, aspiration, injection, reaspiration) method was applied in group 1. In group 2, we used a different procedure that could be called the PAI (percutaneous aspiration and injection) method. After this procedure, routine sonography and CT examinations were conducted. The results of both groups were compared. RESULTS. Follow-up examinations showed that liver hydatids expanded approximately to their original size after a significant reduction during the first month. In the follow-up period, fluid contents totally disappeared; thickening and irregularities were also observed in the cyst walls and a solid, hyperechogenic, heterogeneous pseudotumor appearance representing a degenerated membrane was seen in all patients. Hypertonic saline solution inactivated the scolices from the beginning of the treatment. However, scolices were inactive in the cysts aspirated 1 month after the procedure in group 2. A significant correlation was noted between elapsed time after the treatment and the cyst size using Wilcoxon's signed rank test (P = 0.000). No difference was seen between two groups in the amount of cyst size reduction using the Mann-Whitney test (p = 0.521). CONCLUSION. In addition to its oral use, albendazole may be injected intracystically as we did in our study. It sterilizes the cyst cavity and affects scolices as well

Primary Echinococcus Infestation of the Bone and Muscles

Hydatid diseases of the bone and muscles are rare, generally are incurable, and have a high level of recurrence. We attempted to ascertain whether the recurrence rate decreased in patients with hydatid disease infestation of the bone and skeletal muscle who were treated with current surgical techniques and antihelminthic chemotherapy, and whether the outcomes for bone infestation were different when compared with outcomes for muscular infestation. We retrospectively reviewed 15 patients with hydatid disease of the bone (eight patients) and muscle (seven patients). The average followup was 30 months (range, 6-69 months). Recurrence was observed in four patients with bone involvement. No patient with muscle involvement had a recurrence after excision. Hydatid disease of the bone often is recurrent and progressive despite using advanced diagnostic studies, improved surgical techniques, and newly developed antihelminthic drugs. The disease status also was not as good as for patients with bone lesions when compared with patients with muscular lesions

Práca analyzuje, akým spôsobom sa aspekty života tangskej spoločnosti spojené s hodvábom premietli do diela stredne tangských básnikov Wang Jiana 王建 (cca. 751-830) a Bai Juyiho 白居易 (772-846). Identifikuje rôzne témy a popisuje, aké významy hodváb ako literárny motív pomáha vyjadriť v literatúre.Sericulture has been a part of Chinese culture since ancient times. The silk dress was a symbol of the social privileges of the educated elite and the court. On the other hand, silk production and silk processing were also part of the everyday life of common villagers. For Chinese society, silk was an important material both economically and culturally. This diploma thesis analyzes how various aspects of life in Tang society, which were connected to silk, are portrayed in the works of the middle Tang poets Wang Jian 王建 (cca. 751-830) and Bai Juyi 白居易 (772-846). This paper identifies various themes and describes meanings that silk as a literary motif helps to express.Institute of East Asian StudiesÚstav Dálného východuFaculty of ArtsFilozofická fakult
