On the impossibility of inferring cohort fertility measures from period fertility measures

    No full text
A particularly important struggle faced by demographic analysts is, how to arrive at statements about family formation processes from a cohort perspective from data that are essentially collected on an annual basis. The present paper is concerned with this struggle, mostly restricted to the case of fertility. The central question investigated here is: given observed period data, what can we conclude about the completed family size of real women? I review several existing methods to infer cohort fertility from period fertility measures. The conclusion is that, for each method, its justifiability can be verified only empirically: by looking at cohort fertility directly. To illustrate how this can be done, the paper analyses fertility data from a cohort perspective for two countries, Italy and the Netherlands.cohort fertility, demographic transition, fertility, Italy, Netherlands, period adjustment, tempo and quantum, total fertility rate

Chemically enhanced primary treatment of wastewater in Honduran Imhoff tanks

Thesis (M. Eng.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Civil and Environmental Engineering, 2008.This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 61-63).Imhoff tanks represent approximately 40% of the wastewater treatment infrastructure in Honduras. This thesis evaluates the usage of solid aluminum sulfate as a means to achieving national effluent regulations in Imhoff tanks in the municipality of Las Vegas, Santa Barbara. The report contains a brief background on both Imhoff tanks and chemically enhanced primary treatment and a discussion of the governing technical considerations. The residents of Las Vegas produce a very high amount of relatively dilute domestic wastewater (approximately 1,000 liters/person/day). Bench scale testing and pilot testing during January 2008 in the Las Vegas Imhoff tanks found that a dosage of approximately 150 mg/l alum (17% Al2O3) was necessary to treat Las Vegas? domestic wastewater. However, solution preparation and chemical injection were found to be difficult to achieve under current conditions and the cost of alum in this quantity is prohibitively expensive. The final recommendations to the municipality of Las Vegas include encouragement to conserve water and a comprehensive plan to better maintain the Imhoff tanks in order to achieve higher levels of treatment. This thesis also documents the author's efforts to ascertain the status of Imhoff tanks in the rest of Honduras in terms of their size, design, and maintenance. During January 2008 three other Imhoff tanks in the department of Santa Barbara and one in the department of La Paz were visited and all were found to be in varied states of disrepair. However, several hold the potential to be rehabilitated after the removal of sludge.by Anne M. Mikelonis.M.Eng

Reason for exclusion Andrena gravida is a species primarily of deciduous woodland in Europe to western Turkey (Gusenleitner & Schwarz 2002). Additionally, the taxon is present in eastern Turkey (Kars and Hakkâri provinces) based on previously unidentified specimens examined by the lead author that were collected by Klaus Warncke and Maximillian Schwarz (Linz). However, it is easy to confuse with other members of the former subgenus Zonandrena (= Melandrena Pérez, 1890, see Pisanty et al. 2022b) such as A. gazella, which is present in Iran. The records presented by Allahverdi et al. (2016) also include specimens collected from late July, which is inconsistent with the ecology of A. gravida, which is univoltine and flies in the spring only, with the latest recorded date for examined Turkish specimens being June 17 th. Given the presence of this taxon in eastern Turkey, it may well be present in northwestern Iran, but this remains to be confirmed.Published as part of Wood, Thomas J. & Monfared, Alireza, 2022, A revision of the Andrena (Hymenoptera: Andrenidae) fauna of Iran, with the description of 16 new species, pp. 1-136 in European Journal of Taxonomy 843 on pages 124-125, DOI: 10.5852/ejt.2022.843.1947, http://zenodo.org/record/722230

MR imaging of the hip and knee before and after marathon running.

    No full text
BACKGROUND: Despite its obvious benefits regarding aerobic fitness, the possible deleterious effects of long-distance running remain controversial. The repetitive loading associated with this activity could potentially predispose to the subsequent development of osteoarthritis. Lower extremity malalignment can also result in abnormal joint loading and is another possible contributing factor for premature articular cartilage degeneration. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether external impact loading in marathon runners creates internal stresses on bone and cartilage that are demonstrable on MR images. Participants were separately assessed for static lower extremity alignment, using standard radiographs. METHODS: Six recreational and two semi-professional runners underwent magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of the hip and knee before and after a marathon run using coronal T1-weighted and coronal STIR sequences. RESULTS: The pre-run and post-run scans failed to demonstrate marrow oedema, periosteal stress reactions, or joint effusions in seven runners. One patient who underwent a reconstruction of his anterior cruciate ligament 18 months ago demonstrated a small effusion in the reconstructed knee before and after the race. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that the high impact forces in long-distance running are well tolerated and subsequently do not demonstrate changes on MR images

    [Osteoarthritis from long-distance running?]

    No full text
Long distance running has become a fashionable recreational activity. This study investigated the effects of external impact loading on bone and cartilage introduced by performing a marathon race. Seven beginners were compared to six experienced recreational long distance runners and two professional athletes. All participants underwent magnetic resonance imaging of the hip and knee before and after a marathon run. Coronal T1 weighted and STIR sequences were used. The pre MRI served as a baseline investigation and monitored the training effect. All athletes demonstrated normal findings in the pre run scan. All but one athlete in the beginner group demonstrated joint effusions after the race. The experienced and professional runners failed to demonstrate pathology in the post run scans. Recreational and professional long distance runners tolerate high impact forces well. Beginners demonstrate significant changes on the post run scans. Whether those findings are a result of inadequate training (miles and duration) warrant further studies. We conclude that adequate endurance training results in adaptation mechanisms that allow the athlete to compensate for the stresses introduced by long distance running and do not predispose to the onset of osteoarthritis. Significant malalignment of the lower extremity may cause increased focal loading of joint and cartilage

    Hoover’s Judeo-Christians

    No full text
This chapter considers the FBI's ambivalent relationship to Jews and Judaism during the 1940s through the 1960s. It explains how could Jews be seen as unAmerican while Judaism was believed to play a foundational part in sustaining American values. On the one hand, mid-century antisemitism and Cold War ideologies combined to create suspicion of Jewish leftists, as the antagonistic relationship between the FBI and Hollywood demonstrated. On the other hand, "Judeo-Christian" rhetoric and the embrace of a "Judeo-Christian" tradition became an essential part of what differentiated America from the supposedly godless USSR for Hoover and many other Cold War era Americans. The author Sarah Imhoff, a scholar of American Judaism, explores this tension as she traces the fraught role of Jews in the FBI culture of the Hoover era.</p
