Nova totius Terrarum orbis tabula [cartographic material] /
Double hemispherical map of the world with 2 polar circles, with relief shown pictorially. Published in a Danckerts atlas.; Shirley, R. Mapping of the world 529.; Koeman, C. Atlantes Neerlandici, Dan 1.; Koeman, C. Atlantes Neerlandici, Dan 2.; Also available in an electronic version via the internet at: http://nla.gov.au/nla.map-rm3976; The National Library also possesses a half sheet of the American hemisphere collected by Rex Nan Kivell (MAP NK 2456/5). The Library does not hold a copy of the map on which it is based, de Wit's Nova totius Terrarum orbis tabula, ca. 1665, which does not show a separate New Guinea. A copy of this work is held by the State Library of New South Wales. The light oxidation visible on the back of the map suggests it was most likely coloured at the time of publication. This map plate, the second general world map drawn for the Danckerts firm, is signed I. Danckerts and Shirley notes that it is not clear whether this signature refers to Justus Danckerts senior, or his son, also named Justus, who pre-deceased him in 1692. Changes from the first plate include a revised lower polar circle, now showing all the southern continents as far north as the equator, whereas previously only the southernmost tip of South America was depicted. The coast of North America west of California has been added, as well as the names of the oceans. Nova Guinea is now drawn as an island on the western hemisphere. The decorative surround is based on Frederick de Wits maritime map of 1668.While very similar to de Wit's map, the Danckerts map is updated with the new discoveries in the south polar circle and the addition of Nova Guinea and the detail in the Pacific Ocean. The names of the oceans have also been added. Other amendments include the north west coast of America above the Island of California and the beginnings of the coast. The significance of the map is its depiction of Australia quite separate from New Guinea. The Dutch for a long time kept to their depiction of a right-angled Cape York associated closely or even connected to New Guinea, with little concession to Torres. New Guinea is shown in the western hemisphere view. The map may be compared with the 1648 Cornelis Danckerts world map held by the Library, Orbis Terrarum typus de integro in plurimis emendatus auctus et icunculis illustratus, which was among the first to show the results of Tasman
