Concentrating on Creation: Following Christ in a Context of Climate Change

    No full text
Climate change is arguably the greatest challenge facing humanity and the planet today. It invites theologians, just as much as anyone else, to consider what we might do in the situation in which we find ourselves. In responding, our action must be informed by theory that helps us to act differently, as we seek a better future for our planet. The theologian also knows that we do not act alone, so an interrelated account needs to be fashioned, which speaks of human and divine action, and of the connection between activity and rest. This article seeks to develop just such a response – though, conscious of the scale of the task, it does so in just two areas.Drawing on the creation-faith of Edward Schillebeeckx, the first theme explored here is that of the interaction between critical negativity and critical positivity. His dialectical account offers the possibility of developing a distinctive form of the interplay between the positive and negative aspects in his theology that can legitimately be called critical optimism. In this spirit, the theme of human and ecological solidarity is considered, suggesting that developing this theme sequela Schillebeeckx can play a helpful role in the dialogue between Church and society that is one of the aims of public theology. Considering some recent initiatives in the UK, the article argues that Christians can show, by the way they act in society, what kind of human and ecological solidarity they are choosing to live out, and thereby what kind of human beings they are choosing to be and to become. Living a simple and sustainable lifestyle, in solidarity with all creatures, is a way of following Jesus that can be a powerful witness to Christianity today, and make an important contribution to debates about climate change.© 2017, Stephen van Erp, Martin G. The centrality of 'between' in intellectual entrepreneurship

    No full text
A great deal of intellectual entrepreneurship happens between institutions. Between institutions in the dual sense of the term: institutions as organizations and institutions as conventions. Ideas and the energy to take them forward are often born when people from different organizations come together, ideas that might not fit within one institution alone. And the introduction of new ideas often involves pushing institutions as conventions aside, creating new space BETWEEN existing institutions for the different idea to emerge. The article explores the example of a business- and-research venture, CHOICE mobilitätsproviding GmbH, to illustrate the importance of multiple types of BETWEEN and their significance for organizational learning.

The language of incipient opposition: the discourse of the party of democratic socialism in German politics 1989-1995

This work explores how the PDS, as legal successor to the SED and thus to a party emanating from a Marxist tradition, has sought discursively to deal with the task of adapting to the demands of the all-German polity and of establishing a place for itself on the far left of the German political spectrum. Leaning heavily on the work of the critical linguists whose central interest was in exploring the relationship between language and ideology, this study starts from the premise that language and ideology inform one another dialectically: language is constitutive of ideology. As establishing and maintaining dominant ideologies and/or honing or adapting these in accordance with external exigencies is central to politics, the relationship between language and politics (and language and history) is likewise a dialectical one. A particular focus is upon the attempts of PDS party leaders and ideologues to establish a mediating, 'super-discourse' capable of smoothing over the high-level of intra-party factionalisation and of legitimising the PDS as broadly as possible in the political establishment. Opposition is a thematic leitmotiv: the PDS's historiographic portrayal of the SED's and its own relationship to opposition movements in the GDR and the Wendezeit is examined, as is the high-level of intra-party opposition and the linguistic staging of the inner-party polemic on whether the PDS's self-styled, extra- system, oppositional role will allow its inclusion in conventional governmental alliances. In addition, aspects of the language of the vociferous political opposition engendered and encountered by the PDS are also considered
