This contribution proposal intends to reconstruct and then examine the reflections that Jonas Cohn elaborates in both the aesthetic spheres in the crucial time
span that goes from 1914 to 1916. As is well known, the Great War represents a
situation exceptional that causes a sort of interruption and traumatic bewilderment destined to profoundly change the neo-Kantian philosophical context and to
initiate from within it processes of revision of predominant themes and directions
already consolidated over time towards a considerable arrangement of new orientations. In this scenario, Cohn takes a position by recovering the theme dear to
him of aesthetics (in fact in 1901 – it is worth remembering – he was the author
of an Allgemeine Ästhetik which remains – it can be peacefully affirmed – the first
systematic work on the theme of the school of Baden) also and above all related to
issues related to the religious. Also for Cohn the foundational plane of reference
on which he argues these positions is that of the “critique of culture” to which the
author will also dedicate an important monograph as early as 1914. This will also
be an opportunity for the author to return to rethinking the notion of value in the
light of the changed historical-epochal situation that sanctions the decline of the
belle époque
Genome Majority Vote Improves Gene Predictions

Cohn is with Los Alamos National Laboratory, John Dunbar is with Los Alamos National Laboratory.Recent studies have noted extensive inconsistencies in gene start sites among orthologous genes in related microbial genomes. Here we provide the first documented evidence that imposing gene start consistency improves the accuracy of gene start-site prediction. We applied an algorithm using a genome majority vote (GMV) scheme to increase the consistency of gene starts among orthologs. We used a set of validated Escherichia coli genes as a standard to quantify accuracy. Results showed that the GMV algorithm can correct hundreds of gene prediction errors in sets of five or ten genomes while introducing few errors. Using a conservative calculation, we project that GMV would resolve many inconsistencies and errors in publicly available microbial gene maps. In this article, the author provides an overview of tele-ethics, the ethical delivery of clinical services via the Internet and telecommunication technologies, with a focus on communication disorders. Guidance for new and experienced telepractitioners is gleaned from the Code of Ethics of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), ASHA position statements and other documents on telepractice, and other health-care disciplines (e.g., psychology and medicine).\ud

Prediction of Functional Sites in SCOP Domains using Dynamics Perturbation Analysis
Dynamics perturbation analysis (DPA) finds regions in a protein structure where proteins are "ticklish", i.e., where interactions cause a large change in protein dynamics. Previously, such regions were shown to predict the location of native binding sites in a docking test set, but the more general applicability of DPA to the prediction of functional sites in proteins was not shown. Here we describe the results of applying an accelerated algorithm, called Fast DPA, to predict functional sites in over 50,000 SCOP domains
The Influence of Spatially Varying Supply on Coastal Aeolian Transport: A Field Experiment
Supply-limiting factors, like moisture content and sediment armoring,influence coastal aeolian sediment transport and subsequently dune evolutionsignificantly. We organized a 6-week field experiment on the influence ofspatiotemporal variations in supply on coastal aeolian sediment transport at theSand Motor, The Netherlands. Due to the presence of a strongly curved coastlineand complex intertidal bathymetries, a large spatial variation in supply is to beexpected at the Sand Motor, which makes the area particularly suitable for a fieldexperiment on this subject. Preliminary results show that not the largest surfacearea of sand, nor the biggest fetch or the most severe storm result in significantaeolian sediment transport events, but persistent moderate winds over largeintertidal beaches are the key to coastal aeolian transport and subsequently duneevolution.Coastal Engineerin
Writing and the rights of reality: usurpation and potentiality in Derrida, Plato, Nietzsche, and Beckett
The thesis critically evaluates Jacques Derrida's conferral of the rights of reality on writing, focussing on his theory of an arche-text in light of the speculative nature of this theory. The theory is initially considered in the context of Derrida's elucidation of the usurpatory status of writing within the Platonic and Nietzschean texts. This consideration reveals an admission of writing's usurpatory status by both writers while at the same time demonstrating their awareness of the intrinsically speculative nature of this view, the significance of writing lying in its ability to exteriorise the radically indeterminate status of consciousness m relation to reality rather than its ability to displace consciousness or reality The analyses, therefore, not only bring the Derridean hypothesis of a repressive or phonocentric metaphysical episteme into question but also exhibit the historical and philosophical role of potentiality in relation to writing, writing's ultimate significance lying in its capacity to exteriorise our existence as a mode of potentiality. Accordingly, in the second half of the thesis the Derridean theory of writing is countered with a specifically Aristotelian theory of the text as it is exhibited in the prose of Samuel Beckett, an author whose significance lies in his close alignment with Derridean theory within contemporary criticism. It is demonstrated that this identification has obviated an awareness of the significance of potentiality within the Beckettian text, his work consequently being appraised in the previously neglected context of Aristotelian metaphysics
On the Dual of the Lovász Theta Prime Number for the Disjunctive Product of Graphs
The Lovász theta function, and the variants of it given by Schrijver and Szegedy are upper bounds on the independence number of a graph. These functions play an important role in several optimization problems, such as the Cohn-Elkies bound for optimal sphere packing densities.This thesis covers the properties of these functions. The main focus of this thesis is the multiplicity of Schrijver's variant. A construction for optimal solutions to the dual problem of this function for the disjunctive graph product is proposed, and its generality is studied. It is shown that for abelian Cayley graphs, the Lovász theta function, and its variants reduce a linear program. Using properties of Fourier analysis an upper bound is given on the minimal gap between the largest and least eigenvalues of optimal solutions to the dual of Schrijver's variant. This, along with numerical results, suggests that the proposed construction is more likely to hold when abelian Cayley graphs are sparse.Applied Mathematic
Beach growth driven by intertidal sandbar welding
Seasonal variability in wave conditions drive corresponding cycles of erosion and accretion along sandy beaches. Despite the fact that these oscillations are well documented at numerous sites throughout the world, the physical processes driving beach recovery remain poorly understood. Using field data from a low sloping, dissipative beach in the U.S. Pacific Northwest we show that the onshore migration of intertidal sandbars contributes to beach growth in a rapidly prograding system. Over a six week period two intertidal sandbars are shown to migrate onshore resulting in the generation of a low relief berm and local beach width increases of up to 20 m. Although significant alongshore variability of intertidal morphological change was observed, a 2.5 km stretch of coast is shown to experience beach growth as a result of intertidal bar welding.Coastal Engineerin
Consistency of gene starts among <it>Burkholderia </it>genomes
Abstract Background Evolutionary divergence in the position of the translational start site among orthologous genes can have significant functional impacts. Divergence can alter the translation rate, degradation rate, subcellular location, and function of the encoded proteins. Results Existing Genbank gene maps for Burkholderia genomes suggest that extensive divergence has occurred--53% of ortholog sets based on Genbank gene maps had inconsistent gene start sites. However, most of these inconsistencies appear to be gene-calling errors. Evolutionary divergence was the most plausible explanation for only 17% of the ortholog sets. Correcting probable errors in the Genbank gene maps decreased the percentage of ortholog sets with inconsistent starts by 68%, increased the percentage of ortholog sets with extractable upstream intergenic regions by 32%, increased the sequence similarity of intergenic regions and predicted proteins, and increased the number of proteins with identifiable signal peptides. Conclusions Our findings highlight an emerging problem in comparative genomics: single-digit percent errors in gene predictions can lead to double-digit percentages of inconsistent ortholog sets. The work demonstrates a simple approach to evaluate and improve the quality of gene maps.</p
