The rebellious mind: explaining which people become rebels
Conflict scholarship has developed a complex understanding of how socio-economic factors influence the individual choice to join a rebel group, but conflict scholarship also lacks progress an understanding of how an individual’s predispositions toward specific
behaviors influence this decision. This dissertation investigates which individual predispositions are likely to influence the decision to join a rebel group. In examining these predispositions, I seek to also answer whether the same predispositions are likely to influence the behavior or rebel group members. While the behavioral predispositions are likely to be numerous, I focus on variation in personality traits and specifically on an
individual’s level of trait aggression. I argue that personality traits are stable predictors of behavior and likely to influence joining behavior by placing personality trait variation in the broader context of the decision to join a rebel group. I find that variation in trait
aggression plays an important role in the individual decision to join a rebel group and that trait aggression also influences the way individuals perform in a commonly used rational choice game. Finally, I argue that studying personality traits is important outside the civil war context and find that aggression also predicts which individuals are likely
to join a traditional state military. The Effects of the Implementation of the Conscious Discipline Program on Social Emotional Learning in an Early Childhood Classroom
CONSCIOUS DISCIPLINE 2 Abstract This study investigates the efficacy of Conscious Discipline’s teaching strategies to enrich social-emotional learning and establish a positive classroom climate in an early childhood Montessori classroom. Conscious Discipline is a written program, of instructional and behavioral strategies created by Dr. Becky Bailey (2011). The question throughout this research project was “Does teaching Conscious Discipline strategies enhance social-emotional learning in preschool aged children?” The study was conducted in a Montessori classroom, the participants being both boys and girls ranging in age from 3 to 4 years. For six weeks, Conscious Discipline strategies were being implemented on a day-to-day basis, when dealing with real-life incidents in the classroom, reading books purchased through Conscious Discipline and establishing a Safe Place. During this sixweek study data was gathered through observations, a pre-survey, and a standardized assessment, and analyzed to document the effects of Conscious Discipline. The data collected demonstrated an increase in social-emotional learning, an increase in the joy in teaching, a positive classroom climate, a decrease in aggressive acts, and an increase in student respect and responsibility in a social community
Charles Handy: The exemplary guru
Among many managers Charles Handy might well be described as a ‘world class’ management thinker. He is certainly the first British management author to have achieved international guru status. The author of widely-commended management best-sellers and MBA set texts, known through broadcasting and management videos, he has presented himself more recently as a self-styled ‘social philosopher’. But just how philosophical is he? Does he offer genuinely new ideas? And what explains his vast appeal? Ashly Pinnington considers three works from Handy’s social philosopher period. He argues that they are conservative and focused on the interests of managers and business owners rather than employees or society as a whole. Like a mediaeval friar seeking converts, Handy uses mythic structures and exempla to invest his claims and propositions with plausibility and authority. Drawing on research into management gurus as a phenomenon, Ashly Pinnington concludes that when we read authors like Handy we should attend not merely to the ‘philosophy’ but also to the way narrative techniques are used in conveying ideological and moral messages
A Study on Cost Effectiveness and Security of VANET Technologies for Future Enhancement
AbstractIntelligent Transport System (ITS) is an advanced application which provides web enabled services for traffic and transport system, which results in a safer, coordinated traffic network system. ITS is very effectively used in VANET (Vehicular Ad-hoc Network), which is a spontaneous creation of wireless network of vehicles for exchanging information between them, for improved transport and traffic management and to enable various users to be sufficiently informed about the road and make safer and smarter decisions on road by using transport networks. As the technology has to be used widely, there is a high need for a low cost VANET technology with high security and Quality of Service. To go for any further developments, a thorough analysis on the available technologies is essential to get a closer view on the current scenario. The result of this study can open doors for a better technology for future VANETs. This paper considers a few existing technologies such as CROWN, Vehicular Cloud and VANET-Cloud and a comparison on these is carried out
PV Systems with Continuous Sliding Mode Controlled Quadratic Boost Converter
AbstractPhotovoltaic (PV) systems can provide maximum power with higher efficiency at best operating point with respect to incident solar irradiation. The locus of maximum power operating point varies with panel surface and cell temperature. An effective maximum power point tracking algorithm can always match the solar and load characteristics continuously so that maximum power is transferred to the load. This paper proposes the use of Quadratic Boost Converter (QBC) as a MPPT converter with existing modified incremental conductance algorithm. The performance of the converter is improved with continuous sliding mode controller such that the system is effective for fast and large variations in input solar irradiation. The result is studied in MATLAB/Simulink platform and validates the efficiency of the proposed MPPT controller
Analysing the Performance of a Flat Plate Solar Collector with Silver/Water Nanofluid Using Artificial Neural Network
AbstractIn the present study performance of flat plate solar collector with silver/water nanofluid is simulated using Artificial Neural Network (ANN). The solar radiation heat flux was varied between 900W/m2 and 1000W/m2. The Reynolds number is varied from 5000 to 25000. The effect of radiation heat flux, mass flow rate, and inlet temperature on the heat transfer coefficient, thermal efficiency was analyzed. The ANN results were compared with the experimental results; also by using the ANN the thermal efficiency of flat plate solar collector was predicted up to the Reynolds number of 100000. It was observed from this study that, the ANN results agree well with the experimental results with the deviation less than ±2%
Synthesis of 2-(aminophenyl)adenine derivatives: a simple protocol using the classical iron powder/acetic acid reduction methodology
2-(Nitrophenyl)adenine derivatives were isolated from the reaction of 5-amino-4-amidino-imidazoles with nitro-benzaldehydes. The conversion of the nitro derivatives to 2-(aminophenyl)adenine derivatives was performed using iron/acetic acid as reducing agent, in 70% aqueous ethanol. The products were isolated in good yield and the isolation protocol involves simple filtration and extraction procedures. This methodology is compatible with the presence of functional groups such as amines, ethers, halofluorides and halochlorides.The accepted manuscript in pdf format is listed with the files at the bottom of this page.
