Constraints to Teaching and Learning of Science, Vocational and Technical Education in Enugu Municipality, Enugu State, Nigeria
The purpose of the study was to determine the constraints to teaching and learning of science, vocational and technical education in Enugu, Nigeria. The study addressed the curriculum of science, vocational and technical education in Nigeria. It examined the challenges inherent in the implementation of the curriculum. Fifty (50) respondents were selected by simple random sampling and responses obtained with structured questionnaire and focus group discussion schedule. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics. The findings showed dearth of instructional materials and non-comprehensive curricular as major constraints to teaching and learning science, vocational and technical education in Enugu. Based on the findings, the researchers made this major recommendation: sourcing and supplying of up to date facilities, curricular and tools into the schools’ workshops and laboratorie
Anoxia-reoxygenation modulates cadmium-induced liver mitochondrial reactive oxygen species emission during oxidation of glycerol 3-phosphate
Aquatic organisms are frequently exposed to multiple stressors including low dissolved oxygen (O2) and metals such as cadmium (Cd). Reduced O2 concentration and Cd exposure alter cellular function in part by impairing energy metabolism and dysregulating reactive oxygen species (ROS) homeostasis. However, little is known about the role of mitochondrial glycerol 3-phosphate dehydrogenase (mGPDH) in ROS homeostasis in fish and its response to environmental stress. In this study, mGPDH activity and the effects of anoxia-reoxygenation (A-RO) and Cd on ROS (as hydrogen peroxide, H2O2) emission in rainbow trout liver mitochondria during oxidation of glycerol 3-phosphate (G3P) were probed. Trout liver mitochondria exhibited low mGPDH activity that supported a low respiratory rate but substantial H2O2 emission rate. Cd evoked a low concentration stimulatory-high concentration inhibitory H2O2 emission pattern that was blunted by A-RO. At specific redox centers, Cd suppressed H2O2 emission from site IQ, but stimulated emission from sites IIIQo and GQ. In contrast, A-RO stimulated H2O2 emission from site IQ following 15 min exposure and augmented Cd-stimulated emission from site IIF after 30 min exposure but did not alter the rate of H2O2 emission from sites IIIQo and GQ. Additionally, Cd neither altered the activities of catalase, glutathione peroxidase, or thioredoxin reductase nor the concentrations of total glutathione, reduced glutathione, or oxidized glutathione. Overall, this study indicates that oxidation of G3P drives ROS production from mGPDH and complexes I, II and III, whereas Cd directly modulates redox sites but not antioxidant defense systems to alter mitochondrial H2O2 emission
Tensile Behaviors of Al-Si-Mg Alloy Reinforced with Periwinkle Shell and Mangifera Indica Particulates
Abstract: Tensile behaviors of Al-12wt%-2wt%Mg based biocomposites containing different concentrations of periwinkle shell and Mangifera indica particulates (PSp and MIp) have been explored experimentally. The effects of hybrid concentrations on the tensile behaviors were also investigated. The structural analysis of the developed biocomposites was done using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The biocomposites demonstrated excellent tensile behaviors at different concentrations of the reinforcements with maximum ultimate tensile strength of 233 MPa obtained by Al-12wt%-2wt%Mg-6PSp-2wt%MIp biocomposite. The biocomposite recorded higher strength than the alloy matrix. The improvements of mechanical properties are guaranteed by the distribution of PSp and MIp particles in the alloy matrix as evidenced in the microstructural analysis.

"Something must be wrong" is also the title of the work, and when something is wrong, then solution is sought to put things right. Unfortunately, this is not the case in Nigeria. We em to have landed ourselves in a state where
the rats found themselves as they searched for a
way of controlling one of their greatest enemies - the cat. One solution was agreed by all the rats and that is, to bell the cat. But one rat asked, who will bell the tat? At this point, all the rats took to
their holes for none was ready to volunteer to bell
the cat. Cats remain the greatest enemy of rats till
ate. Have we landed ourselves in the same situation the rats found themselves?

"The manslaughter of Education", "Chief-Omego-
Syndrome", "The Patriots of Doom", "The Holy
Thieves and the God of Bandits", "The Banks of
Bankruptcy", reflect the situation we described
above.
The last two chapters, however, insist that
Nigerians as whole' should join hands to fight
undignified, dishonourable and disrespectful life
style. This is simply put by the author in this way,
"Nigerians repent"!"
This work is an eye-opener and is written
for all. It is simply presented in a way that even
elementary five pupils can understand. Other
attractive aspect of the work is that the author
makes use of stories and films we all know. He is,
simply put, an honest writer who does not take
hi r aders for granted; he tells us the source of
hi in piration.

Political, economic and cultural ratonales forstate creation in Nigeria., 2009
This study examines the rationales underlying state creation in Nigeria. Specifically, the study addresses significant political, economic, and socio-cultural issues considered to be the rationales behind the creation of states in Nigeria. Dependency theory was applied to determine whether state creation is: (a) a viable public policy tool to promote much needed good governance in a country whose ethnic groupings number 374; (b) tied to rapid economic development of a nation whose population falls mostly below the poverty line; and (c) reduces ethnic strife and eliminates religious tensions in a country rife with such conflicts. The study found that the continued colonial-type government policies that has created thirty-six states out of the original three, failed to allay minority fears of domination by the larger ethnic groupings; has failed to deliver rapid economic development as envisioned or bring the people closer to the government; and has failed to stem incessant demands for state creation from minority enclaves seeking relief from majority domination. A major recommendation of the study is replacing calls for more stales with calls for quality leadership that is free from corruption but based on grassroot empowerment

Eligible patients were randomized to Pylorest (a three-in-one tablet containing rabeprazole 20 mg, amoxicillin 1 g, and clarithromycin 500 mg) and Syferol-IHP for 2 weeks, followed by rabeprazole and Syferol-IHP for 2 weeks or Pylorest and placebo for 2 weeks, followed by rabeprazole and placebo for 2 weeks. Repeat endoscopy-guided biopsy and histology were done 4 weeks posttherapy. Primary outcome measures were the healing of ulcer and eradication of Helicobacter pylori. Secondary outcome measures were the disappearance of epigastric pain, gastritis, and duodenitis. Analysis was by intention-to-treat.Results: Of the 63 patients enrolled, 60 patients had complete evaluation, with 37 patients receiving Pylorest and Syferol-IHP and 23 patients receiving Pylorest and Placebo. Healing of the PUD in favor of Pylorest and Syferol-IHP was significantly higher for gastric ulcer (RR=0.000, 95% CI=undefined, P=0.048) but not for duodenal ulcer (RR=0.400, 95% CI=0.07–2.37, P=0.241). H. pylori eradication was 100% with Syferol-IHP vs 50% with placebo (P=0.066). Epigastric pain (reduction to 16.2% vs 43.5%; P=0.021), gastritis (reduction to 13.5% vs 39.1%; P=0.024), and duodenitis (reduction to 0% vs 8.7%; P=0.327) were observed in the Syferol-IHP and Pylorest vs placebo and Pylorest groups, respectively. Adverse events (RR=0.971, 95% CI=0.46–2.04, P=0.937) and laboratory parameters were not significantly different pre- and posttherapies (P>0.05, for both groups).Conclusion: Although both treatment arms were equally safe, co-administration of Syferol-IHP and triple therapy is more efficacious than triple therapy alone for treating PUD. INFLUENCE OF TEACHERS’ MOTIVATION ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF ECONOMIC STUDENTS.
The Topic of this research is the influence of Teachers’ Motivation on the academic performance of Economic students in Dunukofia Local Government Area of Anambra state. The general purpose of the study was to find out the influence of Teachers’ motivation on the academic performance of Economic students in Dunukofia Local Government Area. The study was a descriptive survey and the researcher employed the use of structured questionnaire in gathering data from the population of four hundred (400), drawing the sample size of one hundred and seventy (110) respondents. The data collection was analyzed using simple percentage techniques. In the course of the study, the researcher found out that teachers in Dunukofia Local Government Area did not receive regular payment of salaries and allowances and that poor salaries reduced the teachers’ performance in the class room. From the above, the findings, I recommended that regular payment of salaries and allowances should be made available to the teachers in Dunukofia Local Government Area, and that government should increase teachers’ salaries to help increase the job performance of the teachers
STAFF MOTIVATION AND DEVELOPMENT – A WAY OF ACHIEVING OPTIMUM PERFORMANCE IN THE NEW SECONDARY SCHOOL CURRICULUM
In this paper, an attempt is made to discuss the staff motivation and development as a way of achieving optimum performance in the new secondary school curriculum. The introductory part of the paper is a brief account of Nigeria education reform agenda for secondary schools. This is followed by the discussion of concepts of staff development and motivation, secondary school curriculum and the rationale for a reform. The paper also discussed the interaction effect of staff development and motivation on their performance. The author made recommendations to all the stake holders in education on ways of motivating teachers for optimum performance and subsequent high achievement by students. In conclusion, the author prays God to help the “Guinea pigs” of the new curriculum implementation for secondary schools
Analysis of annexin 7 gene of malignant prostatic hyperplasia-induced male wistar rats in the presence of Annona muricata
Background: Prostate cancer has become the most common cancer among African – American men and the second leading cause of cancer death in men worldwide. Many anti-malignant agents have been isolated from different plant species with minimal or no side effects thus it
holds future promise as a resort as cancer biotherapeutics when compared with other treatment
methods including synthetic drugs. Aim: This current investigation was aimed at evaluating the
anti-proliferative efficacy of the ethanolic extract of Annonamuricata leaf on annexin 7 gene of malignant prostatic hyperplasia induced male wistar rats. Materials and Methods: Sub-chronic daily oral gavage exposure of the test substances to experimental animals lasted for a period of 28 days. Monosodium glutamate and L-arginine (90:22.5 mg/kg/b.wt) with purity 98% were administered concomitantly to the male wistar rats in various treatment groups. A total of 25 male wistar rats of about 6 weeks old weighing between 250–282 grams were used for this investigation.
Quantitative and qualitative phytochemicals screening of ethanolic extract of Annona muricata leaf were also carried out. Hematoxylin and eosin staining were used in the histological assay of the prostate tissues. The prostate specific antigen (PSA) values were determined using standard protocol and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to amplify annexin-7 gene. 1.5% agarose gel was used to separate the amplicons into bands of varying patterns. Result: Qualitative analysis demonstrated the presence of alkaloids, Saponins, flavonoids, tannins, cardiac glycoside, reducing sugar, phenol and triterpenes. Quantitative screening of the extract unveiled that alkaloid was present in the highest amount while Cardiac glycosides had the least concentration.
The prostate histological assessment revealed a dose-dependent disruption in normal prostate tissue architecture. There was statistically significant difference P ≤ 0.05 in the body weight and prostate specific antigen (PSA) values of the male wistar rats in the experimental groups during the period of this investigation. The varying amplicon band patterns obtained from the treatment groups indicates possible MSG and L-ARG induced mutation in annexin 7 gene. The DNA amplicon bands observed in the positive control without treatments had some degree of similarity with bands obtained from the amplicons in the various treatment groups that were administered with both carcinogens and ethanolic leaf extract while thin bands were observed for the negative control group that was administered with carcinogens alone. Conclusion: This investigation has demonstrated that ethanolic extract of A. muricata leaf could be used as a potent ethno-chemopreventive agent against L-arginine and monosodium glutamate induced malignant prostatic hyperplasia in male wistar rats
Mortality salience and prejudice towards ethnoreligion minorities: Results and implications of a Nigerian study
Mortality salience (MS), or the view that people
have increased awareness of own cultural views with
annihilation threat (Solomon, Greenberg, & Pyszczynski,
2004), has been demonstrated in high prejudice settings
(Cohen, Soenke, Solomon, & Greenberg, 2013) For
instance, MS induction led to an increased support for
martyrdom attacks against Americans among young
Iranians, and increased support for extreme military actions
by American forces in the Middle East among young
Americans (Pyszczynski, Abdollahi, Solomon, Greenberg,
Cohen, & Weise, 2006) Terror management theory (TMT:
Greenberg, Pyszczynski, & Solomon, 1990) proposes that
human group self-preservation instincts call for necessary
adaptive abilities; and particularly so within helplessness
or ultimate mortality situations The awareness of likely
mortality from group persecution exposes the individual to
a paralysing terror or anxiety MS risk for an outer group is
higher with prejudice against them Prejudice is a positive
or negative (although, mostly negative) evaluation of
another person based on their perceived group membership
(Davidio & Gaertner, 2010) It is a learned attitude
towards a target object that typically involves negative
affect, dislike, or fear with a set of negative beliefs that
support the attitude and a behavioural intention to avoid, to
control, or dominate, those in the target group (Zimbardo
& Leippe, 1991)
