No full textTranscript of an oral interview of Joseph D. Keenan. Raised in Chicago, he spent two years at Notre Dame University and when the war started, volunteered for Naval Aviation duty. Following Pre-flight School at Iowa University, he attended flight training at Naval Air Station, Chicago, where he was later diagnosed with chronic air sickness. He was disenrolled and entered the V-12 program at the University of Wisconsin. Upon graduation in September 1944, he was commissioned and ordered to Fort Pierce, Florida for Underwater Demolition Team (UDT) training. He describes the nature of the training and conditions at Fort Pierce. Upon completing UDT training in December 1944 he was sent on a troopship to Calcutta, India. After traveling by train to a camp in Eastern India, he flew over "The Hump" in a C-47 to Kunming, China and then on to Chungking and headquarters of Sino-American Cooperative Organization (SACO). He relates that after four weeks in Chungking he was flown with a team to a location near Amoy. Leading the team was Lieutenant Phil H. Bucklew, a professional football player who later became known as the father of Navy Special Warfare. The team made its way to Chenchow with orders to attack a Japanese position near Amoy and capture the last of the Japanese code books in preparation for the invasion of Japan. He relates that before the attack was launched, the war came to an end, and he was ordered to Shanghai in January 1945, where he was assigned as Special Investigator for the Shore Patrol. He recalls several interesting experiences in Shanghai, which at the time was still being administered by the Japanese Army. He recounts being given a special assignment to deliver a large sum of money to the financial officer in Hankow. He recounts playing in organized football games in Shanghai between Navy and Army players, many of whom were professional players who had enlisted. He describes how, while playing in one of these games, he suffered a serious injury to his thumb and was transferred to the heavy cruiser USS St. Paul (CA-73) for transit back to the states. He received further treatment at Long Beach Naval Hospital and eventually Great Lakes Naval Hospital, where he was discharged from the Navy

No full textThe papers of Joseph D. Tydings, lawyer, Maryland politician, and U. S. Senator, relate primarily to Tydings' term as senator from Maryland from 1964 to 1970. The collection also relates to Tydings' maternal grandfather, Joseph Davis; his stepfather, Millard Tydings; his term in the Maryland House of Delegates; his appointment as United States Attorney for the District of Maryland; and his work for John F. Kennedy's 1960 presidential campaign. Also documented is Tydings' attempt to recapture his former Senate seat in 1976. Document types include hearing transcripts, speeches, voting records, newspaper clippings, and audio-visual materials. Subjects covered include crime in the District of Columbia; gun control; judicial reform; and population control. The Life magazine controversy, revolving around an article published by the magazine that alleged that Tydings had questionable business connections, is also discussed; this controversy was a contributing factor in Tydings' 1970 electoral defeat
