Electrocatalytic CO2 reduction by aminopyridine cobalt complexes: electronic effect of substituents on the pyridyl ring and mechanistic insights
No full textIn the last decade, several earth-abundant metal-based molecular catalysts have been found highly active for the photochemical or electrochemical CO2 reduction. However, despite their efficiency for the light-driven CO2-to-CO process,1 the electrocatalytic performances of Co complexes containing N4 or N5 ligands are still generally affected by catalyst deactivation,2 large overpotentials3 and low faradaic yields, due to either ligand decomposition or a preferential H2 evolution pathway under acidic conditions.4 To overcome these barriers, design of novel Co catalysts should be coupled to a deep understanding of the electrocatalytic mechanism, based on the characterization of key intermediates formed during the process. 5
Herein, we present a series of novel synthesized [CoII(Y,XPyMetacn)(OTf)2] complexes (1R, Scheme 1) containing N4 tetradentate ligands with general formula Y,XPyMetacn (1-[2′-(4-Y-6-X-pyridyl)methyl]-4,7-dialkyl-1,4,7-triazacyclononane),6 employed as catalysts for the electrochemical reduction of CO2. The introduction of different substituents at the - and -positions of the pyridine allowed us to systematically evaluate the effect of the electronic properties of the ligand on the catalytic activity. As highlighted by the electrochemical data, the redox non-innocent character of the Y,XPyMetacn ligand is extremely sensitive to the substitution at the pyridyl ring, and influences not only the E1/2(CoII/I) value, but also the nature of the reduction event itself, thus leading to different reactivity of the electrochemically generated CoI species towards CO2. Moreover, extensive spectroscopic (NMR) and spectroelectrochemical (IR and UV-Vis) studies were carried out to investigate the intermediates produced in the course of the catalytic process. Theoretical modelling provided also key mechanistic details for the CO2 reduction reaction.

Structural tuning of photoluminescence in nanoporous anodic alumina by hard anodization in oxalic and malonic acids
No full textWe report on an exhaustive and systematic study about the photoluminescent properties of nanoporous anodic alumina membranes fabricated by the one-step anodization process under hard conditions in oxalic and malonic acids. This optical property is analysed as a function of several parameters (i.e. hard anodization voltage, pore diameter, membrane thickness, annealing temperature and acid electrolyte). This analysis makes it possible to tune the photoluminescent behaviour at will simply by modifying the structural characteristics of these membranes. This structural tuning ability is of special interest in such fields as optoelectronics, in which an accurate design of the basic nanostructures (e.g. microcavities, resonators, filters, supports, etc.) yields the control over their optical properties and, thus, upon the performance of the nanodevices derived from them (biosensors, interferometers, selective filters, etc.).Abel Santos, Maria Alba, Mahbubur M Rahman, Pilar Formentín, Josep Ferré-Borrull, Josep Pallarès, Lluis F Marsa

No full textBarcellona 2004, Fórum Universal de las Culturas. Un evento straordinario, di portata intercontinentale, diventa l’occasione per dare slancio al recupero di una parte della città da sempre ignorata. Ormai nota la vicenda del recupero del lungomare – per decenni "retro" della città, ridotto in stato di forte degrado in seguito al declino industriale degli anni Settanta – solo recentemente si è cominciato a studiarne con occhio storico-critico i meccanismi che hanno regolato e le scelte che hanno influenzato la sistemazione dell’area del Fórum 2004, intervento fortemente voluto dall’architetto capo del comune catalano Josep Anton Acebillo Marin. Fra gli architetti di fama internazionale che hanno contribuito alla realizzazione di questa parte di città progettando edifici e spazi pubblici capaci di accogliere e attrarre turisti da tutto il mondo, Josep Lluis Mateo ha lasciato un "segno" non trascurabile per l’analisi e la comprensione dell’intervento, contribuendo forse più di altri al ridisegno di un’area che non si limita a quella su cui è costruito l’edificio presentato in questa monografia. Risale al 1999 (anno del piano preliminare sviluppato da Mateo per la sistemazione del lungomare) l’intuizione affatto scontata di pensare la famosa Diagonal di Barcellona non tanto una grande arteria che attraversa la città terminando sul frontemare, quanto piuttosto l’elemento che, pur connettendo la città alla sua costa, lungo essa si piega e la segue senza concludere il proprio sviluppo sul waterfront. Questa valutazione – allora aspramente contestata – determinò scelte decisive durante tutta la fase progettuale del CCIB, il Centro de Convenciones Internacional de Barcelona ideato da Josep Lluis Mateo e qui pubblicato. Il Centro Congressi (uno dei più grandi al mondo) si inserisce in un isolato completamente progettato e realizzato sotto la guida dello stesso Mateo, determinando così un unicum di rara forza espressiva e completezza. Partendo dall’analisi territoriale che l’architetto spagnolo elabora in occasione di questo progetto, Michele Sbacchi esamina gli aspetti tipologicamente innovativi dell’opera e il suo contesto, mettendo in stretta connessione le scelte urbanistiche con quelle relative all’edificio, evidenziando l’indiscussa capacità di Mateo di controllare tutte le fasi e gli aspetti della progettazione, dalla scala urbana a quella del dettaglio costruttivo. Ne emerge un quadro di grande rigore che rende questo mediterraneo convention centre unico nel suo genere
