Here is a curious book. Its title-page declares "The Artist's Book of Fables" but its pre-title-page has "Fables, Original and Selected, with a Memoir of the Author." After that title-page, it is identical with "Fables, Original and Selected" as in our copy printed by John Murray in 1833. There is again an AI at the front and an index of engravings and engravers at the back. I found that copy twenty years ago. I had found an inferior copy twenty-two years before that. At that time, I noted Aesopic fables here including "Stone Broth" and "The Mouse and the Oyster."This is a hardbound book (hard cover)James Northcote, R.A

Seismic data reveal eastern Black Sea Basin structure

Rifted continental margins are formed by progressive extension of the lithosphere. The development of these margins plays an integral role in the plate tectonic cycle, and an understanding of the extensional process underpins much hydrocarbon exploration. A key issue is whether the lithosphere extends uniformly, or whether extension varies\ud with depth. Crustal extension may be determined using seismic techniques. Lithospheric extension may be inferred from the waterloaded subsidence history, determined from\ud the pattern of sedimentation during and after rifting. Unfortunately, however, many rifted margins are sediment-starved, so the subsidence history is poorly known.\ud To test whether extension varies between the crust and the mantle, a major seismic experiment was conducted in February–March 2005 in the eastern Black Sea Basin (Figure 1), a deep basin where the subsidence history is recorded\ud by a thick, post-rift sedimentary sequence. The seismic data from the experiment indicate the presence of a thick, low-velocity zone, possibly representing overpressured sediments. They also indicate that the basement and\ud Moho in the center of the basin are both several kilometers shallower than previously inferred. These initial observations may have considerable impact on thermal models of the petroleum system in the basin. Understanding\ud the thermal history of potential source rocks is key to reducing hydrocarbon exploration risk. The experiment, which involved collaboration between university groups in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Turkey, and BP and\ud Turkish Petroleum (TPAO), formed part of a larger project that also is using deep seismic reflection and other geophysical data held by the industry partners to determine the subsidence history and hence the strain evolution of\ud the basin

Identification of Sources of Faecal Source Isolates in Ningi Creek, Australia

This study was undertaken to investigate the feasibility of using antibiotic resistance patterns (ARP) for source tracking faecal contamination in surface waters, and linking faecal contamination to on-site wastewater treatment systems (OWTS). ARP's were established for a library of 1005 known E. coli source isolates obtained from human, domesticated animals, livestock and wild sources. Eight commonly used antibiotics at four different concentrations were used to obtain ARP's for the E. coli isolates. Discriminant Analysis (DA) was used to differentiate between the ARP of sources isolates, and identify the predictive ability of the library for classifying between isolates collected from human, wastewater treatment plant and on-site system sources. The source library was used to identify sources of faecal contamination in investigated surface waters and determine the significance of OWTS as a major contributor to faecal contamination. The developed ARP library was found to be adequate for discriminating human from non-human isolates, and was used to classify 144 enumerated E. coli isolates collected from monitored surface water locations. The resulting ARP DA indicated that a majority of the faecal contamination in more rural areas of the study catchment was non-human. However, the percentage of human isolates increased significantly in urbanised areas using on-site systems for wastewater treatment

Dedication page with notes by David Jones and Colin Hughes, primarily about the identity of: 'Pte. R.A. Lewis-gunner from Newport, Monmouthshire killed in action in the Boesinghe Sector N.W. of Ypres'. [Allen, Thomas Reginald - Reg Allen - born Abertillery, Monmouthshire, enlisted Royal Welsh Fusiliers at Holborn, 21767 L/Cpl, killed in action France/Flanders 6th May 1917].Colin Hughes visited David Jones many times to discuss elements of the attacks on Mametz Wood by the Welsh battalions in the period 7th to 12th July 1916 during the Battle of the Somme. David Jones annotated Colin's copy of the book 'In Parenthesis' (1937) during these visits.</p
