Get PDFThis workshop was convened to begin building a foundation of understanding for developing and evaluating proposed measures for the rational management of the blue crab fishery in Chesapeake Bay. Our goal was to generate a summary of knowledge of blue crab stock dynamics. Specifically, we intended to address, and hoped to estimate, the basic parameters of an exploited stock - growth, mortality, natality, migration rates, sex ratios and abundance. In one sense these objectives were simply a means for organizing our discussions. A second objective was to compile at the workshop pertinent data held by the major research institutions on Chesapeake Bay so all participants could see the kinds and extent of existing data. As with many stock assessment problems, tailoring an estimating procedure around known existing data can be more productive than deciding on a procedure and then trying to find the required data in someone else's files.

Bullying and harassment and work-related stressors: Evidence from British small and medium enterprises
Get PDFThis article examines the relationship between work-related stressors and bullying and harassment in British small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). Using representative data from a national survey on employment rights and experiences (Fair Treatment at Work) this research identifies that bullying and harassment is just as prevalent in British SMEs as in larger organizations. Drawing upon the Management Standards of the Health and Safety Executive a number of significant relationships with bullying and harassment are established. Work demands placed upon employees are positively related to bullying and harassment behaviours, whilst autonomy, manager support, peer support, and clarity of role are negatively associated with such behaviours. The study considers implications for human resource practices in SMEs and the risks of informal attitudes to these work-related stressors in contemporary workplaces are discussed

Get PDFThe paper argues that the systematic review of qualitative research is best served by reliance upon qualitative methods themselves. A case is made for strengthening the narrative literature review and using narrative itself as a method of review. A technique is proposed that builds upon recent developments in qualitative systematic review by the use of a narrative inductive method of analysis. The essence of qualitative work is described. The natural ability for issues of ethnicity and diversity to be investigated through a qualitative approach is elaborated. Recent developments in systematic review are delineated, including the Delphi and Signal and Noise techniques, inclusion of grey literature, scoping studies and meta-ethnography. A narrative inductive interpretive method to review qualitative research is proposed, using reflective teams to analyse documents. Narrative is suggested as a knowledge-generating method and its underlying hermeneutic approach is defended as providing validity and theoretical structure. Finally, qualities that distinguish qualitative research from more quantitative investigations are delineated. Starting points for reflecting on qualitative studies and their usefulness are listed. The masses of the cataclysmic variables AC Cancri and V363 Aurigae
Get PDFWe present time-resolved spectroscopy and photometry of the double-lined eclipsing cataclysmic variables AC Cnc and V363 Aur (= Lanning 10). There is evidence of irradiation on the inner hemisphere of the secondary star in both systems, which we correct for using a model that reproduces the observations remarkably well. We find the radial velocity of the secondary star in AC Cnc to be KR= 176 ± 3 km s−1 and its rotational velocity to be v sin i= 135 ± 3 km s−1. From these parameters we obtain masses of M1= 0.76 ± 0.03 M⊙ for the white-dwarf primary and M2= 0.77 ± 0.05 M⊙ for the K2 ± 1V secondary star, giving a mass ratio of q= 1.02 ± 0.04. We measure the radial and rotational velocities of the G7 ± 2V secondary star in V363 Aur to be KR= 168 ± 5 km s−1 and v sin i= 143 ± 5 km s−1, respectively. The component masses of V363 Aur are M1= 0.90 ± 0.06 M⊙ and M2= 1.06 ± 0.11 M⊙, giving a mass ratio of q= 1.17 ± 0.07. The mass ratios for AC Cnc and V363 Aur fall within the theoretical limits for dynamically and thermally stable mass transfer. Both systems are similar to the SW Sex stars, exhibiting single-peaked emission lines with transient absorption features, high-velocity S-wave components and phase-offsets in their radial-velocity curves. The Balmer lines in V363 Aur show a rapid increase in flux around phase 0 followed by a rapid decrease, which we attribute to the eclipse of an optically thick region at the centre of the disc. This model could also account for the behaviour of other SW Sex stars where the Balmer lines show only a shallow eclipse compared to the continuum
Collecting Older Lesbians' and Gay Men's Stories of Rural Life in South West England and Wales: "We Were Obviously Gay Girls ... (So) He Removed His Cow From Our Field"
Get PDFThe emerging recollections, perceptions and storied biographies of older lesbians and gay men and their experiences in rural Britain are presented in the article, alongside consideration of the multiple qualitative methodologies used in a unique multi-method participatory action research project. The project aimed to empower older lesbians and gay men in rural areas through a collaborative design and meaningful participation in the research process itself. Methods included the core Biographic Narrative Interpretive Method (BNIM) (JONES, 2001, 2004; WENGRAF, 2001) with its interpretation of data by panels of citizens. In addition, visual ethnographic site visits, a focus group and two days of theatrical improvisation of interview data to explore action within the texts were used. The project embraced the principles of a performative social science (GERGEN & JONES, 2008; JONES, 2006, 2012a, 2012b) in its dissemination plan. Four of the collected stories are elaborated on here. These and other stories, reports and observations contributed to the creation of the main output of the project—a short professionally made film (Rufus Stone). The film is used to encourage community dialogue and inform service providers, opening up new possibilities of connectivity, communication and common ground at both macro and micro levels

No full textThe thesis presents an analysis of Friedrich Schiller’s works on the Thirty Years’ War: the historiographical treatise Geschichte des dreyßigjährigen Kriegs (1790-1792) and the dramatic trilogy Wallenstein (1800). The research has not only been conducted in relation to other significant works of the author, but also to other literary texts of the late 18th century which revolve around the same topic and which have mostly remained unexplored by critics. The corpus includes works by Benedikte Naubert, Gerhard Anton von Halem, A.G.F. Rebmann, Johann Nepomuk Komareck and Niklas Vogt. The selected texts differ consistently from one another in terms of genre, theme and literary quality. However, each of these documents has much to convey about aesthetical, historical, political and philosophical issues that are central to the culture of the late 18th century. The aim of this research is to contextualise these texts within their Entstehungshorizont, to analyse the discourses they engage in and to explain the reasons for the growing interest of the time for the Thirty Years’ War, thus shedding new light on Schiller’s works
A random walk through the dynamics of homogeneous vapor-liquid nucleation
Get PDFA method of calculating rates of homogeneous vapor-liquid nucleation based on Langevin dynamics of a few relevant degrees of freedom on a free-energy surface is proposed. The surface is obtained here from simulation and from a semi empirical expression. The mass and friction coefficients are derived from atomistic umbrella-sampling molecular-dynamics simulations. The calculated nucleation rate agrees with atomistic simulations for one particular state point of the Lennard-Jones fluid. The present method is about four orders of magnitude more computationally efficient than the direct atomistic simulation of the transmission coefficient.David M. Huang and Phil Attar
