Coll. by M.C. Parler and Max Hunter William Eden Monte Ne, Ark. January 11, 1960 Reel 324, Item 6 Great-grandfather Johnny Jones Grandmother was a widow woman, and I don’t remember ever seein’ my grandfather on Mother’s side of the house, Grandfather Jones. I guess he died about the time I was borned. And I’ve seen my great-grandfather, though, on his side. Old Uncle Johnny Jones. He lived to be a hundred and five. He was a-livin’ with grandmother, and my father — for a good long while Mother's brothers wasn't grown. And my father, he helped to look after Grandmother and see about em how they got along. All lived right together. And so Uncle John Jones, that was the one I learnt that from. He was the baby of Grandmother's family, and so anything he learned, I got a chance to learn it... Oh yes, I recollect him (his great-grandfather). He'd go a-fishin’, and I and Uncle John Jones, we were boys playin’ around. I’m the oldest one of my father’s family,— And the old man, Uncle John Jones, everybody called him Uncle Johnny... and my uncle John was named for him. And we’d play around where the old man was a fishin’. He’d say, "Keep still, Boys." I can recollect that just good and well. He’d say, "Keep still, Boys, keep still. I’m gettin’ a bite now. Keep still." The fish was a-bitin’ fer him.Funding for digitization provided by the Arkansas Humanities Council and the Happy Hollow Foundation
