Invertebrates and restoration: Interview with Jonathan Majer

    No full text
Entomologist Jonathan Majer is a world pioneer in using ants as indicators of restoration success. With hundreds of published works to his name (and five species of ants named after him), he reflects in this interview on his undimming passion for learning and teaching about invertebrates - a group of animals that can include up to 95% of faunal species in a reference community

Impacts of an incursion of African Big-headed ants, Pheidole megacephala (Fabricius), in urban bushland in Perth, Western Australia

An incursion of the African Big-headed Ant, Pheidole megacephala, has recently been recorded in bushland in Perth, Western Australia. This unexpected discovery prompted an investigation into the effects of the incursion on the native ant assemblages. Extensive pitfall trapping in invaded and non-invaded areas revealed that the incursion had a significant negative impact on ant species richness, diversity and evenness. Approximately 53% of native ant species present in non-invaded bushland were not sampled in areas occupied by P. megacephala, while the remaining species suffered considerable declines in frequency of occurrence. Many of these species perform important ecosystem functions, and their loss was thought to have had serious consequences on the ecosystem. Changes to the prevalence of the various ant Functional Groups indicated major disruptions to the composition of the assemblage as the abundance of P. megacephala increased. Ants that avoided direct competition with P. megacephala, by occupying temperature dependant temporal niches, were more persistent in its presence. Estimates of the ant biomass sampled indicated that the invasive population was larger than that of all other ant species combined by several orders of magnitude. A feeding trial revealed intensified exploitation of food resources in invaded areas, which could have flow-on effects on other invertebrates and plants. Changes to predation, decomposition, and soil amelioration regimes, as well as possible disruptions to ant-plant interactions and invertebrate symbioses resulting from the disappearance of native ant species, were thought to have further eroded the conservation values of the ecosystem

Fire effects on invertebrate fauna of forest and woodland

An understanding of the influence of fire on soil and litter invertebrates in Australian ecosystems is important in view of the important role of these animals in nutrient cycling (Hutson 1983), maintenance of soil structure (Greenslade & Greenslade 1983) and provision of food for certain vertebrate animals such as tne mardo (Hindmarsh & Majer 1977)

The primary goal of present master thesis is the concept and construction of fabric book. Highlights and characteristics of book based on theory are first described and the role of textiles in bookmaking process is discussed. Books as art form are explained, focused on such made of textiles. The second part of thesis includes practical work: the concept of the fabric book. It’s focused on realisation of the idea. Theoretical findings have led the author to construct a picture book made of fabric and entitled Fragment

This thesis first defines social procedures. These are studied and analyzed by social soft- ware, an emerging interdisciplinary field. This thesis will focus on a prominent social procedure, the coalition bargaining and coalition formation. Basic definition and overview of the coalition theory are introduced. Last chapter will concentrate on Bram's model of the coalition formation and his definition of the stable coalition. Other models of the coalition bargaining are briefly introduced and compared to the Bram's model. Keywords: coalition bargaining, coalition formation, stability of coalition

Analysis of neologisms in the Harry Potter book series

Z njimi je poimenovala bitja, like, predmete, uroke in kraje. Neologisms are newly coined words, which have not yet been fully accepted into language. Many of them are found in the Harry Potter book series, since the author, J. K. Rowling, imagined a whole wizarding world and that required new words. Those were used to name creatures, characters, objects, spells and places. Her neologisms are especially creative, express characteristics, secrets, allude to appearances or are comical. Such names are called aptonyms and it is vital that we successfully transfer them into the target language, otherwise readers are denied an authentic experience. Neologisms and aptonyms, which are found in the Harry Potter book series and in Fantastic Beasts: Original Screenplay, are presented in this thesis. The purpose of this thesis is to analyse neologisms and see if they are successfully transferred into the target language. Theoretical part discusses neologisms, word formation processes, aptonyms, translation and translation of children\u27s literature. Empirical part analyses etymology and word formation processes of original terms and compares them with their translations. The emphasis is on translation procedures used by translator Jakob J. Kenda, whether he successfully transfered the neologisms into Slovene, retained their meaning, connotation, effect, wordplays and whether he retained aptonyms. Most frequently used word formation process is combining, and most words are compounds. While translating neologisms, the translator frequently used derivation and creation of new neologisms, thus creating inventive and amusing translations. Most aptonyms were retained, mostly by using occasional equivalents, while wordplays were recreated as well

The influence of fire, vegetation age and Argentine ants (Iridomyrmex humilis) on ant communities in Swartsboskloof

Ants are sensitive to disturbance and it has been suggested that their species composition and abundance may be used as an index of the conservation status of natural systems (Fox 1981; Majer 1983; Majer et al. 1984). In this study we determined the effects of various disturbance factors on indigenous ant communities in Swartboskloof. We examined whether fire, vegetation age and the presence of the Argentine ant had any effect on ant community composition and abundance
