[A Tribute from a Soldier Enroute: Remember Us by Kenneth W. Johnson]
A poem written by Kenneth W. Johnson entitled Remember Us. The poem explores the unspoken relationship between soldiers and airline stewardess during wartime. Offering grace and beauty, the stewardesses give morale to the soldiers heading off to battle. Written in September of 1970, the poem offers a glimpse into the realities of the Vietnam War. The poem is written in rhyme and follows an AA, BB, CC, etc. rhyme scheme; meaning that each pair of lines rhyme with each other. Kenneth W. Johnson served in the Vietnam War as commander of Mike 3/7 (3rd Battalion, 7th Marines) in the United States Marine Corps. Serving in the marines throughout the 1960s-1990s, Johnson later retired in 1991 and became a schoolteacher for the Canterbury School of Florida. Johnson later passed away on August 26th, 2024. He was 87 years old. The poem is typewritten on a single sheet of paper and has a small handwritten inscription on the bottom left corner that reads; "Written sometime in Sept. 1970 by a soldier going to Vietnam." The paper has deep creases along the length and width of the paper from prolonged folding. The back of the paper also has handwritten in blue ink the name 'Peter Rosen' with two phone numbers that read '872-0565' and '781-4431'. Written in smaller text is the name 'Brother Joel'
