Chair of the Textile Development and Marketing Department Ingrid Johnson discusses developments in textile studies since her start at FIT in 1981. Johnson notes that course work has evolved from a more science-oriented approach to one that favors reverse-engineering textiles to fit end-use applications. She then illustrates the end-use applications of various fibers. Johnson describes her work as a home furnishing fabric developer before being recruited by Arthur Price to join FIT, and goes on to discuss successful alumni placement at companies such as Liz Claiborne, J. Crew, and Patagonia. Johnson notes the complexity of international sourcing and product development, and then describes the invention of EcoSpun, a recycled polyester textile, patented by alumni of the program. She discusses close connections with the industry and professional organizations such as the Textile Distributors Association. Finally, she describes the demographics of FIT’s student body and how the school attracts students with its international reputation

The article discusses the background to the erection of the huge church tower in Bjälbo, Östergötland, Sweden. It also focuses on medieval women as founders of churches. The author maintains that new dendrochronological dating of the tower could mean that founder of this building piece was not one of the male members of the important Bjälbo dynasty, but Ingrid Ylva the mother of Birger Jarl

    Carte de Visite

Hollybush Gardens presents Carte de Visite an exhibition curated by Lubaina Himid, featuring new work by Helen Cammock, Claudette Johnson and Ingrid Pollard. This project has unfolded over the space of a year in different locations including the print room in the School of Art, Design & Fashion at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) where Lubaina Himid is Professor of Contemporary Art, leading the Making Histories Visible Project – an exploration of the contribution of black visual arts to the cultural landscape. The gallery’s desire to showcase work mostly unseen, and spend time with it, inspired this curatorial invitation. Himid’s answer was informed by life-long knowledge of the artists Claudette Johnson and Ingrid Pollard, choosing to expand on this duo with the more recent voice of Helen Cammock. Forebears and successors, a dialogue that must be continued. Carte de Visite is a show, a meeting point, a conversation. Himid notes ‘It has been deeply intriguing to observe what happened when each artist encountered questions about the past and how this will impact upon what they hope may develop in years to come. I now have a better understanding of how these artists work between and beyond an exhibition; they navigate the silences between our histories, either by pinning coloured markers to a three-dimensional map, or by leaving exquisite cards on a silver tray’

Global climate change is causing more extreme droughts, as well as subtler chronic changes in precipitation patterns. Both chronic and extreme precipitation change can alter ecosystem structure and function, and these alterations may affect how systems respond to future extreme climatic events. Understanding how legacies of various past precipitation changes may alter the effects of future extreme droughts will be important for predicting ecosystem responses to climate change. We investigated how ecological legacies of experimentally-imposed chronic and extreme precipitation changes altered the impact of an extreme drought on an economically-important grassland ecosystem.Top Scholars for University-Wide Graduate Programs

A Comparative Study of Strategic HRD Approaches for Workforce Planning in the Tourism Industry

    No full text
Human resource development (HRD) professionals are increasingly tasked to assist organizations with future focused strategic planning initiatives to create projections on the size, composition, and skill level of the workforce. Based on these projections a range of HRD policies, practices, and initiatives can be planned to ensure that the workforce has the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform. A number of different approaches are used in making workforce projections. For the purpose of this study two major approaches are reviewed and compared. The setting for this study is the increasingly important, dynamic, and global tourism and hospitality industry.Bartlett, Kenneth; Johnson, Karen; Schneider, Ingrid E.. (2006).
