No full textThe National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral monologue by John Mitchell. Mitchell recounts planning the Yamamoto mission as lead pilot of the 339th Fighter Squadron. He was called to a meeting where it was suggested that Yamamoto be targeted while aboard ship. Mitchell argued against it, unsure that he could positively identify the ship from the air; he was also concerned that Yamamoto might survive a sinking ship. Mitchell persuaded the group to mount an air attack, and he was tasked with determining when to take off and where to intercept Yamamoto, being sure their route was far enough offshore that the enemy would not see them. They departed under radio silence and traveled 240 miles across open water, flying at an altitude of 50 feet. Using only his compass and watch for navigation, he arrived at the interception point exactly when planned. Mitchell describes the ensuing attack and credits Rex Barber with indisputably shooting down Yamamoto’s bomber and its accompanying bomber

John's mother, Maggie Moyes Mitchell, visited his grave in the Faubourg d'Amiens cemetery in 1921. She contracted sleeping sickness and died in 1922. Note: CWGC records give his father's name as John Mitchell, of "Tyrie", Lochgelly, Fife.</p
