Visual Accessibility and Inclusion. An Exploratory Study to Understand Visual Accessibility in the Built Environment.
Current research shows that visual accessibility assessment in the built environment typically considers objectively measurable parameters. However, considering subjective visual perception for architectural characteristics is extremely important. Visual perception can vary depending on environmental factors and personal factors and is particularly relevant for people with low to mild visual impairments. This explorative research studied the current state of the art of tools and systems that support the assessment of visual accessibility and investigated new ways of experiencing visual accessibility in the built environment. After identifying gaps in the current scenario, the Cambridge simulation glasses were selected as a tool to simulate visual impairments and therefore experience visual accessibility in the built environment. A pilot study was conducted by navigating a publicly accessible building and experiencing how clearly visible certain architectural characteristics were, while walking with and without wearing the glasses. The goal of this study was to understand their potential use in different settings and explore how to offer an empathic experience of visual accessibility with a low-cost tool for different stakeholders
Critical user forums – An effective user research method for inclusive design
Inclusive, or universal, design is about designing more accessible products and services for the widest possible range of users, regardless of age and capabilities. It requires better understanding and empathy with all potential users. Traditional user research methods are limited in accommodating a wide range of users and hence there is a need to find more appropriate methods of user research for inclusive design. This paper describes a method called ‘Critical User Forums,’ which involves direct interaction between design teams and a mixed group of users with severe disabilities. The evaluation of the effectiveness of this method for inclusive design is based on the interviews of eight UK design consultancies that took part in a design competition emphasising inclusive design and involving users, known as the DBA Design Challenge. The contribution of critical users to the DBA projects is discussed and the design teams’ viewpoints on such user involvement in the process are investigated. It concludes that Critical User Forums provide an ideal chance for designers to understand a wider range of users through direct interaction with them and thus helping designers build empathy with all potential users

Power-scalable Ho:YAG slab laser intracavity side-pumped by a Tm:YLF slab laser
We report the first demonstration of an intracavity side-pumped Ho:YAG slab laser, delivering 13W at 2.09µm and discuss the advantages of this scheme as an approach for power scaling
Developing and evaluating a booklet for inclusive design
The aim of inclusive design is to make products accessible to the widest possible population. Although inclusive design is not a new genre, given that similar ideas already existed in the 1970s, the context today is different from that of thirty years ago. The new technology, the emerging ‘grey’ market and the growing disability movement leading to the integration of disabled people into the mainstream society, etc., have formed a new paradigm of designing for inclusion.
Designers seldom deny the importance and benefits of inclusive design. However, they are lacking appropriate skills for practising inclusive design. This probably accounts for the prevalence of ‘non-inclusive designs’ in the mainstream market. The objective of this research is to identify what information about inclusive design is useful for designers and provide them with practical support
Creep and fracture of warm columnar freshwater ice

All rights reserved.This work addresses the time-dependent response of 3m x 6m floating edge-cracked rectangular plates of columnar freshwater S2 ice by conducting load control (LC) mode I fracture tests in the Aalto Ice Tank of Aalto University. The thickness of the ice plates was about 0.4m and the temperature at the top surface about -0 :3 degrees C. The loading was applied in the direction normal to the columnar grains and consisted of creep/cyclic-recovery sequences followed by a monotonic ramp to fracture. The LC test results were compared with previous monotonically loaded displacement control (DC) experiments of the same ice, and the effect of creep and cyclic sequences on the fracture properties were discussed. To characterize the nonlinear displacement-load relation, Schapery's constitutive model of nonlinear thermodynamics was applied to analyze the experimental data. A numerical optimization procedure using Nelder-Mead's (N-M) method was implemented to evaluate the model functions by matching the displacement record generated by the model and measured by the experiment. The accuracy of the constitutive model is checked and validated against the experimental response at the crack mouth. Under the testing conditions, the creep phases were dominated by a steady phase, and the ice response was overall elastic-viscoplastic; no significant viscoelasticity or major recovery was detected. In addition, there was no clear effect of the creep loading on the fracture properties at crack growth initiation: the failure load and crack opening displacements.Peer reviewe
