Resolving conflict in the project environment using emotional intelligence
Abstract: Conflict is part of everyday life and with conflict management revolving around making sure everyone feels heard and respected, whilst negotiating a mutually beneficial solution that everyone involved can accept, it is however the methods and techniques project managers use in resolving conflict that could potentially influence the success of any project. With literature varying in opinion as to whether emotionally intelligent project managers have an improved ability to effectively manage conflict in a project environment, the aim of this research study is to investigate what conflict management strategies project managers with a high level of emotional intelligence prefer including its subsequent impact on overall project success. The four project managers part of this research study, each manages two of the eight project case studies, the elected research method. The preferred conflict resolution strategy and level of emotional intelligence of each of the project managers constitutes the primary data collection. Overall client satisfaction i.e. the measure for project success, constitutes the secondary data collection. Findings suggest that those project managers with a high level of emotional intelligence prefer the conflict management strategy of compromising with this preference having a positive effect on the outcome of the project and those with a lower level of emotional intelligence prefer the conflict resolution strategy of either avoiding or competing with this preference having a direct negative impact on project success. Further research is however needed in order to generalize the results observed but based on the findings it is the researcher’s suggestion that companies should encourage project managers to develop and master the skills of emotional intelligence along with the skills needed to efficiently deal with conflict in the project environment. These skills could form the basis of developing a project managers ability to resolve conflict effectively within a project environment with the benefit thereof not only applicable to project managers but also those individuals forming part of the project team.M.Ing. Histologic healing following tooth extraction with socket grafting using demineralised freeze-dried bone allograft (DFDBA), compared to undisturbed normal healing in humans: a randomised controlled clinical trial
Dissertation (MSc Dent)--University of Pretoria, 2020.Aim: With dental implant treatment having evolved into a very regularly applied treatment modality, post-extraction grafting of extraction sockets with DFDBA in an effort to anticipate and pre-empt post-extraction bone loss has become common practice – clinically known as ridge preservation procedures. The aim of this study was however to histologically determine the quality of bone available for implant placement using DFDBA as grafting material in combination with a resorbable collagen membrane, compared to bone in extraction sockets that were left to heal naturally.
Method: Twenty sites were identified from eight patients requiring replacement of two or more extracted teeth by means of dental implant supported structures, on contralateral sides of the same jaw. They received DFDBA grafting of the socket on one side and no grafting on the contralateral side at the time of extraction. When implants were placed 16 – 20 weeks later, core samples of bone from these sites were first harvested by means of a trephine drill and those samples were processed and examined histologically to determine which of these sites displayed better quality of bone.
Results: One patient’s samples could not be utilised. Comparing the samples of the remaining nine non-grafted to nine grafted extraction sites, the difference in the calculated percentages of trabecular bone and collagen as well as the numbers of osteocytes, inflammatory cells and blood vessels were statistically insignificant.
Conclusion: The results of the study indicate that statistically there are no significant histological differences between DFDBA-grafted and non-grafted sockets.Periodontics and Oral MedicineMSc DentUnrestricte
Double inferior alveolar nerve canals and mental foramina in the mandible : a computed tomography study at a private dental clinic in Kenya
Dissertation (MSc Dentistry)--University of Pretoria, 2017.Aberrant inferior alveolar nerve canals (IANC) and mental foramina (MF) have been well documented and can have significant implications if injured during invasive procedures of the human mandible. Geographical and ethnic differences have been observed in the occurrence of these variations. The primary objective of this study was to determine the pattern of occurrence of double IANC and MF among a sample of patients attending a dental clinic in Kenya through cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) image analysis. The occurrence, location, configuration and morphometric measurements of double inferior alveolar canals and mental foramina were recorded in a data extraction form (Appendix 1). Data was captured in a Microsoft Excel 2010 data sheet. With the use of Bayesian statistics, exploratory and inferential data analysis was done in R (R Development Core Team, Vienna, Austria) software version 3.1.2. The results were presented as posterior distributions of means and mean differences including standard deviations (SD), Credible Intervals (CrI) and effect sizes (ES). In all outputs, the 95% most credible values (CrI) were shown as a High-Density Interval (HDI) in the respective histograms. Gender and side differences were rated. A total of 800 images were included in the present study of 347(43.38%) male and 453(56.62%) female patients. The mean age was 39.18 years+12 SD while median age was 39 years (range: 19 to 67 years). Double IANC were observed in 26 (3.25%) of the 800 images (29 of 1600 sides, 1.81%). The most frequently encountered type of double IANC was type 1 (23 / 29, 79.31%), followed by type 3 (4 /29, 13.79%) and then type 2 (2 / 29, 6.9%). The double IANC were more in the angle region than at the body area of the mandible. The mean diameter and length of the double IANC were 1.57+0.41mm (95% CrI: 1.40, 1.73) and 13.10 +3.45mm (95% CrI:11.60, 14.5) respectively. In total, 21 double MF were found in 19(2.4%) patients, with 11 being posterior, seven anterior and three superior to the main mental foramen (MF). The mean diameter of double MF was 1.27 [95% CrI: 1.05, 1.47] mm with a standard deviation of +0.41mm. The mean distance between double MF and the main MF was 4.69mm [95% CrI: 3.47, 5.59] with a standard deviation of 2.26mm. Based on the findings reported in this study, the rate of occurrence of double IANC and double MF was typically low in the study population. The diameter of the main MF was always smaller than that of the side without the double MF. This was not the case with the IANC. There was also no gender predilection elicited in any of these occurrences. CBCT imaging is recommended as it has better resolution to enable detailed analysis of structures that are less than a millimeter in diameter. Ensuring a safe distance of 9 mm from the walls of the main MF would greatly reduce the risk of injury to the neurovascular contents of the double MF in case CBCT imaging is not available.Community DentistryMSc DentistryUnrestricte
A comparison of two saliva substitutes in the management of xerostomia during radiotherapy for cancer of the head and neck
Magister Chirurgiae Dentium - MChDThe aim of the study is to compare the palliative efficacy of two saliva substitutes (Sinspeek and Xerostom) in patients during radiotherapy for cancer of the head and neck. This crossover randomised controlled clinical trial was carried out on twenty-five patients with malignant tumours of the head and neck, following four weeks of radiotherapy at tygerberg hospital. The benefit of saliva substitutes to ameliorate the effects of xerostomia is well established and proper advice and access to relevant preparations is essential.South Afric

Substance abuse among oral healthcare workers
The abuse of both licit and illicit substances by the general population affects at least one in ten people. Research shows that the oral healthcare worker has at least the same prevalence of substance abuse, perhaps even higher. The emergence of prescription drug abuse is one of the most worrying and dangerous aspects for the healthcare worker, due to ease of access to such drugs. According to the United Nations, prescription drug abuse is amongst the top three practices of substance abuse. We have an obligation to incorporate the evidence of substance abuse among oral healthcare professionals in our undergraduate dental curricula in order to combat this phenomenon. As the stress of daily survival in single practitioner practices increase, so will the danger of substance abuse. This may lead to impairment of the healthcare worker and ultimately loss of registration. It will take a combined effort from organised dentistry and academic institutions to establish a national strategy to ensure we address this important issue at undergraduate level and provide support at practitioner level. This paper will deal with substance abuse and the implications of impairment it holds for the oral healthcare worker.http://www.sada.co.zaam201
Aetiology of oral cancer
Oral cancer (OC) and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC)
are used interchangeably, as more than 95% of all OCs are
OSCCs. Worldwide up to 275 000 new cases of OC are
seen every year. Most of these cases are seen in developing
countries such as South Africa. Up to 50% of all patients
living with OC will die within five years, and this survival rate
has not improved over the last few decades. Tobacco and
alcohol usage account for up to 75% of all OC cases. As
these causative factors can be avoided, all oral health workers
should be aware of the aetiology of OC so that sound
preventive advice may be given to their patients.
Infections and nutrition play a lesser but still important
role in the aetiology of OC. This article reviews the importance
of the aetiology of OC, with the emphasis on tobacco and alcohol.http://www.sadanet.co.zaam2013ay201
Alveolar Ridge Preservation Using Leukocyte and Platelet-Rich Fibrin: A Report of a Case
In order for a dental implant to be restored optimally, it must be placed in an ideal anatomic position. However, this is not always possible, since physiological wound healing after tooth removal, often results in hard and soft tissue changes which ultimately compromises ideal implant placement. With the aim of minimising the need for tissue augmentation, several alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) techniques have been developed. These often require the use of grafting material and therefore increase the risk of disease transmission. Leukocyte and platelet-rich fibrin (L-PRF) is a newly developed platelet concentrate that is prepared from the patient's own blood. Clinical research has indicated that it improves wound healing and stimulates bone formation. We present a case where L-PRF was successfully used in an ARP procedure to facilitate implant placement in a compromised extraction socket
Oral medicine case book 73 : HIV associated oral ulcerations : differential diagnosis
A 36 year old female suffering from multiple oral ulcers was referred to the Department of Periodontics and Oral Medicine clinic at the University of Pretoria in February 2016. The ulcers had been present for a month, were first seen as "small sores" that had subsequently increased in size. On examination, multiple, relatively painful, large (>1cm) ulcers were seen on the palate, labial mucosa, tongue and gingiva (Figure 1). She also had gingivitis and a plunging ranula of the submandibular gland and reported recent weight loss. The patient had been diagnosed with retroviral disease in 2010; her latest CD4 count was 49 with a viral load of 111 797 copies. Her haemoglobin (Hb) was 11. 7g/dL and the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) >60mL/min. She had defaulted antiretroviral treatment (ARV) for a year and was reinstated on treatment, on ARVs regimen 2 comprising of Lamzid and Alluvia in January 2016. Empiric Dapsone treatment had been instituted for the ulcers.http://www.sada.co.zaam2016Oral Pathology and Oral BiologyPeriodontics and Oral Medicin
