He co-authored (with Edward Abbey) ""The Hidden Canyon,"" a book about the Grand Canyon. Joe Munroe's career began in 1939 at the Cranbrook Academy of Art. He served in the Air Force during World War II and then joined Cincinnati-based Farm Quarterly magazine. Though raised in Detroit, agriculture became an important subject of Joe's photographs. He moved to California in 1955 and free-lanced, taking magazine assignments and selling his own work

Oral history interview with Joe Butts
Joe Butts was born March 23, 1930 in Tulsa, Oklahoma and graduated from Tulsa's Marquette High School in 1948. He joined the marine corps reserves and attended the University of Tulsa just prior to being activated in July 1950. He was an ammo bearer in a machine gun squad for the Twentieth Infantry Division. He participated in the Inchon Landing, the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir and several other initiatives while serving in the Korean War
