The Negative Effects of Student Mobility: Mobility as a Predictor, Mobility as a Mediator
Policy discussions on how to improve educational outcomes have traditionally focused on schools and teachers. While schools and teachers have measurable effects on educational outcomes, reforms aimed at only improving schools and teachers have failed to eliminate persistent achievement gaps. Thus, some scholars have argued for a broader, bolder approach to education. These scholars have investigated the effect of nonschool factors, such as health and early childhood care, on educational outcomes. The present study is intended to add to this growing body of literature. Two analyses that were conducted to examine the effect of student mobility on achievement are discussed. The first uses a multi-level analysis to investigate the relationship between student mobility and reading achievement of students. The second analysis uses aggregate school-level data to investigate if student mobility mediates the relationship between a school's socioeconomic status and its academic achievement levels. The results suggest that student mobility is indeed a predictor of academic struggles—at the individual student level as well as the school level—and should be included in the increasing number of conversations aimed at changing social policies to improve student outcomes.

Investigating the relationship between "effective" teachers and theoretical notions of effective teaching: An analysis of whole-group discussions
The literature base on teacher effectiveness has rapidly expanded in the past decade. Once dominated by social scientists, the literature is now heavily influenced by economists. Utilizing value-added modeling, economists have mainstreamed attempts to isolate the effect that a teacher has on student achievement. Findings from these attempts, however, confuse an improvement in measuring teachers with an improvement in measuring teaching. The field of education is still missing transparent, debatable measures of teaching practices. This study proposes a new measure, the adjusted whole-group discussion score, for one teaching practice—conducting whole-group discussions. It then uses that measure on a purposefully sampled group of teachers, and investigates its relationship to statistically derived measures of teacher effectiveness—that is, value-added estimates. This study is one of the first to go inside the classrooms of teachers being labeled effective through value-added modeling and to shed light on their classroom practices. In so doing, the study highlights different aspects of good teaching, which include being accountable to facts and procedures and being accountable to authentic discourse. Moreover, it articulates specific classroom discussion moves that can be used in targeted interventions. Findings illustrate that teachers with similar value-added scores can have markedly different teaching practices and that high value-added estimates do not necessarily reflect a full range of classroom teaching practices. The main policy implication of these findings is that, similar to students who need individualized instruction, teachers need individualized intervention
Jutta Scherrer, Gor'kii - Bogdanov. An appraisal of unpublished correspondence.
The author traces the course of Gor'kii's relationship with Bogdanov as it emerges from his correspondence, to dale unpublished, with the philosopher and political figure during the years 1908-1910, a period marking the first crisis within the Bolshevik fraction - the bitter struggle between its main leaders of the moment, Lenin and Bogdanov. Gor'kii actively adopts a position in favor of the latter: for him Bogdanov's political and cultural vision represents a real and coherent alternative to Lenin's "orthodoxy". This article aims to give no more than a brief account of Bolshevism in the early years of its development : other, more important elements drawn from the collection of documents are analysed in a forthcoming publication.Jutta Scherrer, Gor'kij - Bogdanov.
Scherrer Jutta. The Cloudy Crystal Ball: Does Science Fiction Predict the Future?
The Apollo 11 Moon landing 50 years ago fulfilled one of the dreams of science fiction fans: the first step in humanity’s exploration of the solar system. But the following decades did not turn out exactly as hoped; we still have not colonized the solar system, contacted alien races, or even built a decent jetpack for personal travel. Dr. Scherrer will draw on his experience as a scientist and science fiction writer to examine the extent to which science fiction has predicted the future: when has it hit the mark, and when has it failed miserably? And what accounts for these hits and misses? Dr. Robert Scherrer is Professor and Chair of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Vanderbilt University. His research area is cosmology, encompassing work on dark energy, dark matter, big bang nucleosynthesis, and the large-scale structure of the universe. He is also the author of a quantum mechanics textbook and has published several popular science articles and science fiction short stories. He maintains a blog, Cosmic Yarns, on science and science fiction

Measuring Teaching Using Value-Added Modeling
The use of value-added modeling (VAM) in school accountability is expanding. However, trying to decide how to embrace VAM can be rather nettlesome. Some experts claim it is “too unreliable,” causes “more harm than good,” and has “a big margin for error,” while other experts assert VAM is “imperfect, but useful” and provides “valuable feedback.” This article attempts to parse these statements by exploring the underlying statistical assumptions of VAM, the reliability of VAM’s estimates, and the validity of the inferences commonly made based on the estimates of VAM. It then goes on to discuss the perverse incentives, unintended consequences, and gaming that might accompany the misuse of VAM. The article concludes that while, in many cases, VAM may be preferable to other commonly used measurement modes, it should never be used as the sole indicator of teacher effectiveness. Rather, it should just be a piece of a larger accountability system. </jats:p
First, the author proposes to present the conceptualization of the “proletarian culture”, which was to precede the political revolution in the circle of the leftist Bolsheviks of the party schools, in Capri and Bologna (Bogdanov, Lunačarskij, Gor′kij and others). Then, through concrete examples of the organization of the Proletkul't, the author analyzes how its leaders, and in the first place Bogdanov, tried to cope with the revolution which, according to them, had not achieved its Socialist objectives
