Slimmable neural networks for edge devices
While methods based on deep learning have witnessed major breakthroughs in machine perception and generative modeling, the problem of how to run neural networks within latency budget for edge devices remains unsolved. This thesis presents a new approach to train a single neural network executable at arbitrary widths for instant and adaptive accuracy-efficiency trade-offs at runtime.
First a simple and general method is presented to train a single neural network executable at different widths (number of channels in a layer). The width can be chosen from a predefined widths set to adaptively optimize accuracy-efficiency trade-offs at runtime. Instead of training individual networks with different width configurations, we train a shared network with switchable batch normalization. At runtime, the network can adjust its width on the fly according to on-device benchmarks and resource constraints, rather than downloading and offloading different models. Our trained networks, named slimmable neural networks, achieve ImageNet classification accuracy similar to (and in many cases better than) that of individually trained models of MobileNet v1, MobileNet v2, ShuffleNet and ResNet-50 at different widths. We also demonstrate better performance of slimmable models compared with individual ones across a wide range of applications including COCO bounding-box object detection, instance segmentation and person keypoint detection without tuning hyper-parameters. We visualize and discuss the learned features of slimmable networks.
Further, we propose a systematic approach to train universally slimmable networks (US-Nets), extending slimmable networks to execute at arbitrary width, and generalizing to networks both with and without batch normalization layers. In addition, we propose two improved training techniques for US-Nets, named the sandwich rule and the inplace distillation, to enhance training process and boost testing accuracy. We show improved performance of universally slimmable MobileNet v1 and MobileNet v2 on ImageNet classification task, compared with individually trained ones and 4-switch slimmable network baselines. We also evaluate the proposed US-Nets and improved training techniques on tasks of image super-resolution and deep reinforcement learning. Extensive ablation experiments on these representative tasks demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed methods. Our discovery opens up the possibility to directly evaluate a FLOPs-Accuracy spectrum of network architectures. Finally, we demonstrate an application to search for channel number configurations based on proposed slimmable networks.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'Closed Access', the embargo will last until 2021-05-01The student, Jiahui Yu, accepted the attached license on 2019-02-14 at 14:34.The student, Jiahui Yu, submitted this Thesis for approval on 2019-02-14 at 14:42.This Thesis was approved for publication on 2019-02-15 at 11:18.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #13390 on 2019-08-22 at 16:19:49Made available in DSpace on 2019-08-23T20:44:31Z (GMT). Model-based myelin water fraction mapping: analyses and improvement
In this thesis, the problem of model-based myelin water fraction (MWF) mapping is addressed. We first focus on three of the most widely used signal models for T2*-myelin water imaging (MWI), i.e., the NNLS-multi-exponential model, the magnitude-3-exponential model, and the complex-3-exponential model, and investigate their sensitivities to practical perturbations such as random noise and field-related structured errors. We demonstrate through both Cramér-Rao lower bound (CRLB) analyses and Monte Carlo simulations that the three signal models are all very unstable inherently. Comparatively speaking, however, we demonstrate the theoretical advantage of the 3-exponential models over the multi-exponential model in handling noise, and the practical advantage of the magnitude models over the complex model in handling phase-related perturbations for T2*-MWI. We also illustrate the necessity and effects of incorporating various types of constraints for additional sensitivity gain.
Using the insights obtained in the sensitivity analyses, we then propose a new MWF fitting scheme that leverages an improved signal model and a set of more effective constraints. In particular, a relaxed magnitude-3-exponential model with additional frequency compensation terms is introduced to better represent voxels with large field variations; a set of statistical distributions learned from in vivo training data is further imposed on the model parameters for additional constraints. Using phantom simulation and in vivo experiments, we then evaluate and compare the proposed method with several popular conventional MWF fitting schemes to demonstrate the improved accuracy and robustness of the proposed method.
In this thesis, a literature review on the study of myelin and the development of MWF mapping is provided at the start of the work. Background materials on the CRLB theories are also provided to facilitate reading.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'Closed Access', the embargo will last until 2022-12-01The student, Jiahui Xiong, accepted the attached license on 2020-11-17 at 12:52.The student, Jiahui Xiong, submitted this Thesis for approval on 2020-11-17 at 13:03.This Thesis was approved for publication on 2020-11-18 at 14:00.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #15895 on 2021-03-04 at 16:31:59Made available in DSpace on 2021-03-05T21:45:32Z (GMT). China's onshore wind energy potential in the context of climate change
China has great potential for developing renewable energy to achieve its carbon neutrality goals. Orderly development of renewable energy is essential to enhance resource utilization efficiency and ensure safety during the energy system transition process. This study presents a thorough assessment of China's onshore wind power potential by considering the land suitability, the potential and temporal characteristics, and the impacts of climate change. The high-resolution maps combining wind resources with land conditions and climate scenarios are produced to provide insights into system planning, grid integration, and flexibility management. The results show that the capacity potential of onshore wind energy in China is 9.6 TW with an annual generation of 12.6 PWh, and 83 % of total capacity has a cost advantage with the levelized cost lower than the 60 $/MWh threshold. By comprehensively considering geographical, economic, and social criteria, around 8.1 % of the national territorial area is identified as the most suitable area for wind power development, primarily in Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang. The annual electricity generation from these areas can fulfill nearly 69 % of the nation's electricity demand. Future climate change projections indicate a remarkable generalized drop by 18 % in the north and a slight increase by 7 % in the south under the RCP 8.5 scenario. However, significant changes in wind resources are mostly within restricted areas, suggesting that future climate change would like to bring negative but limited impacts on wind power production in China

A Study of Corporate Liquidity Management
In this thesis, we study the corporate liquidity management integrated with the liability and asset management for financially constrained firms. We develop a theoretical model of dynamic investments, dividend payouts, debt borrowing, external equity financing/bankruptcy policies and analyze the optimal capital structure and liquidity choice with the existence of financial frictions. The model characterizes the central importance of liquidity management and leverage management in corporate decision making in the presence of external financing costs. Our model can generate rich implications. In addition to the classical tradeoff between the tax shield and bankruptcy costs caused by corporate debt, we introduce issuance costs of securities and carrying costs of cash, which generate combined effects on corporate financial decisions. Particularly, we demonstrate a non-monotonic relationship between leverage and firms' investment decisions. On one hand, incremental investment is partially financed with new secured debt and the increase of financial leverage will enhance the size of the current investment. On the other hand, high leverage may rise the coupon payment of the firm and reduce the actual profit and the amount of internal cash flow, which leads to under-investment or even asset sales. In addition, we find that due to a precautionary motive, firms with low or moderate leverage will increase the target cash levels and reduce the dividend payout to be able to absorb short-term losses, while firms with high leverage will increase the dividend payment and cash out early due to the increasing agency costs between debt-holders and equity-holders. Our model characterizes quantitatively how these two effects, interacting with the cash management, will shape up the firm's investment, financing, bankruptcy, and payout decisions. Our model also provides a quantitative analysis of the pecking order hypothesis for firms' financing decisions and offers a novel perspective for the ""leverage ratchet effect"" by showing different attitudes of equity-holders towards leverage reduction with different methods, such as internal funds, pure capitalization, and asset sales. Different from the conventional ""leverage ratchet effect"", we demonstrate that equity-holders with liquidity problems prefer to reduce leverage by asset sales because they have the concern of increasing firms' internal liquidity. JI, Jiahui.Ph.D. Chinese University of Hong Kong 2021.Includes bibliographical references (leaves )Abstracts in English and Chinese.Title from PDF title page (viewed on ...

In the shadow of Chang’an: the space transformation of villages within a cultural heritage site
Excluded from heritage recognition but in the proximity of cultural heritage, the villages within a Cultural Heritage Site (CHS), after being influenced by long-term restrictive conservation policies for protecting the heritage integrity, have gained more freedom than was allowed before and become a space involving multifaced stakeholders to alleviate the tension between cultural heritage conservation and village development. As a result, the villages within a CHS have been faced with much more complex situations as more stakeholders participate in and invoke the profound space transformation here. The perceptions of villages within a CHS can become polarised around a number of positions: the local government controls the administrative power on the management of villages by coordinating the utilization of cultural resources and the conservation of cultural heritage integrity; the capital demands the maximum economic benefits; and the local people’s complex and immediate interests related to the everyday life. All of these positions entangle and compete with each other, leading to increasingly intense conflicts and pushing the villages within a CHS into a more complex state.
Confronted with a more complex state, the space of the villages cannot be limited to a mere “container” but need to take a more inclusive stance because space is part of social relations involving the various stakeholders. To address the problem between cultural heritage conservation and village development, the previous research has paid less attention to the space involving the stakeholders including the local government, capital, professionals, and local people who have an immediate interest in the village. This research argues that there is a gap in the analysis of how the space of villages within a CHS and the different stakeholders influence each other. Undoubtedly, these mutual interactions imply the time scale that needs to be incorporated. Inspired by Lefebvre’s “production of space”, this thesis constructs the framework, a trinity of space practice, top-down forces and bottom-up forces, to provide a way of thinking to explain the multi-dimensionality of space transformation of villages within a CHS. The theory holds that the village itself is a constantly changing entity and space transformation can be explained from the dialectical relations between the physical space and social relations, which further incorporates the space and different stakeholders into consideration and can respond to the research gap. By taking Chang’an CHS as the focus of this research, three case studies are selected and analysed: a relocation village, a heritage-led tourism village, and a cultural products industry village. These three cases exemplify the villages in which profound space transformation has taken place, in order to provide valuable references to seek an appropriate way to develop the villages in the future.
Since the villages are excluded from heritage recognition but in the close proximity to cultural heritage, the villages absorb the carryover effects of heritage and have experienced profound space transformation because of obtaining opportunities to develop and modernise. For the space practice, this research argues that, against the context of cultural exclusion and economic inclusion, specifically, space serves as flow and dynamic differentiation and reorganisation. This flow and dynamic advantage is fully played in multifunctional spaces, demonstrating that the space transformation in the villages within a CHS is not only a straightforward linear replacement of one thing with another. With the alternate impacts of tradition and modernity, in the interest arena of top-down and bottom-up forces, space will not come to an end but will become more diversified. Therefore, a pluralistic and hybrid perspective of space that is full of vitality has progressively replaced the binary dialogue of reciprocal resistance and compromise that exist between modernity and tradition, which further implies that cultural heritage conservation and village development may not either be this or that. Furthermore, for the top-down and bottom-up forces, in the process of space transformation, it can be seen how the top-down forces play an overwhelming role, and how the bottom-up forces take actions with limited power to adjust and change the space as China is an authoritarian society full of diverse hierarchical structures. In the end, after analysing the underlying mechanism, this research recommends that it is important to take an inclusive cultural heritage connotation rather than a heritage-villages dichotomy, to entail more entitlement to local people and pay more attention to their subject in the village, and to attempt to incorporate the CHS into a bigger urban context. Also, from a crucial analytic value, it is necessary to recognize the fact that when adopting the Western concept, like “the production of space”, indigenous contexts in China are worthy of being brought into the global sphere and arguably deserve special attention to develop a new paradigm currently in favour amongst the academic minds

This thesis focusing on Yuefuin the Mid-Tang dynasty, discusses its characteristicsin the new pattern of thought, politics and culture. The thesis tries to provide a new explanation for the literature development in the Mid-Tang.Existing researches often emphasized the relation between yuefu and political reality. However, political reality was not the only theme reflected in yuefu, the description of customs was included. Politic was not the mere reason. Literati’s political identitywas changed and the existing tradition of "praise and criticize" from the Han dynasty was also transformed. The thesis pointed out that the idea of "Fengya" or "poetic education" was changed from the High-Tang to the Mid-Tang dynasty. "Civilization", usually relating to "rites and music", was considered to be successful in the High-Tang dynasty. Therefore, literature was encouraged to praise the dynasty while criticism was ignored. This idea faced challenged from the end of the High-Tang dynasty, and the "poetic education" was lead to "criticize" instead of "praise". The prosperity of yuefu in the Mid-Tang dynasty was closely allied to the new idea.Meanwhile, literati’s political identity changed. Most of them were local officials.Travelling within a wider area activated them to identify the "liangqiandan" tradition from the Han dynasty and to write in a "moral official’s" sight. The change of idea, literati identity as well as political reality provided an environment for yuefu creation in the Mid-Tang dynasty. The thesis provides a new exposition for Zhang Ji and Wang Jian’s positions in this literature development. Zhang and Wang wrote poems in replies. They continued or reformed Li Bai and Du Fu’s yuefu works and represented the new idea of "Fengya" in their works, which provided experience for Yuen Zhen and Bai Juyi later. At the same time, the concept of "Guan Feng" was broadened. Han "Yuefu", as a central office, collected poems to look at local politics with no interest in local customs. However, yuefu in the Mid-Tang dynasty viewed customs as a mean subject of writing. The literati subjectively excluded the tradition of the Six dynasties, but were in fact influenced by this tradition. Besides, customs as a literary subject related to the transform of contemporary Confucianism. When literati viewed "people", not "ritesand music" as the basic of civilization in the political field, people’s activities became a literary theme with justification. Finally, yuefu developed a standard for itself as poets concerned their works on the field. Poets raised "canon" of yuefu againstthe verse written in the Early and High-Tang dynasty. And the idea about yuefu penetrated with the sense of both historian and remonstrating officials when it came to mature. The idea of "folk song collection", coming down from yuefu was broadened and literary themes originally belonged to yuefu were written by other literary forms.Detailed summary in vernacular field only.Detailed summary in vernacular field only.Detailed summary in vernacular field only.Detailed summary in vernacular field only.Detailed summary in vernacular field only.Detailed summary in vernacular field only.呂家慧 = From rising "rites and music" to viewing "people": the research on yuefu poem in the Mid-Tang dynasty / Lu Chia Hui.Thesis (Ph.D.) Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2014.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 251-256).Abstracts also in English.Lü Jiahui = From rising "rites and music" to viewing "people" : the research on yuefu poem in the Mid-Tang dynasty / Lu Chia Hui
