Swinburne students have taken home gold for their exhibit in the 'Achievable Gardens' student competition. Designed by landscape apprentices Zac King and Jessica Stephens, 'Aussie living at its best' was based on the typical Australian backyard complete with a barbeque and native plants. No full textBeowulf, an epic poem dating back to the VIIIth century, depicts a fledgling society oscillating between civilisation and barbarism, elevation and entropy. The young hero, Beowulf, comes to the rescue of the Danes whose citadel is ransacked by two monsters, and he confronts the beasts which are also, to a certain extent, his doppelgângers. The different facets of barbarism - such as excess and dissension - are at the heart of this text which also celebrates social bonding and the spoken word. Seamus Heaney's translation of this medieval masterpiece was published in 1999.Beowulf, épopée rédigée au VIIIe siècle, en vieil anglais et par un poète anonyme, dépeint une société balbutiante qui oscille entre la civilisation et le chaos, l'élévation et la régression à un état informe. Le jeune héros, Beowulf, vient au secours des Danois dont la citadelle est mise à sac par deux monstres ; il se mesure à ces bêtes qui sont aussi, peut-être, ses doubles démoniaques. Manque de mesure, incapacité à maîtriser le logos, discorde... la barbarie hante ce texte poétique qui, pourtant, célèbre aussi l'ordre, le lien, la parole. James Stephens
No full textJames StephensIrish writer. His date of birth is uncertain, but probably not the 1882 which JJ believed. Raised in an orphanage, his early published writing began with pieces in the journal Sinn Féin. He became a prolific author, making a name with fiction (notably The Crock of Gold, 1912) but also publishing poetry and Irish history and culture. In 1925 he moved to London, and in the 1930s Stephens gave radio broadcasts for the BBC on assorted literary topics. While Stephens initially disdained JJ's writing, JJ developed a fascination with Stephens in 1927, believing that they shared a birthday, and at one point suggested to Stephens that he should finish the then-languishing "Work in Progress" (noted first in JJ's letter of 20 May 1927 to Harriet Shaw Weaver, LI 253-54). Fortunately this did not come to pass. Nevertheless, they became friends, corresponding and visiting from time to time. JJ translated Stephens's poem "Stephen's Green" into at least five languages.
