Accessibility of urban forests and other green spaces in the City of Ljubljana
Forests and other green spaces provide various ecosystem services and have numerous scientifically recognized beneficial effects on people and the environment. However the mere presence of green spaces in an area does not necessarily produce the desired effects. The 3-30-300 rule is a novelty that combines three indicators of "greenness" of cities and has the potential to simplify the evaluation of green spaces among planners, researchers and the general public. In this master thesis, we analyzed the criteria of rule 3-30-300 using ArcGIS Pro 3.0.1. software for the Municipality of Ljubljana within the highway ring, divided into neighborhood communities. 23 % of the total area is covered by tree canopy. 63 % of built-up areas achieve accessibility within a distance of 300 m or less to green areas of 1 ha or more. 66 % of buildings in the area achieve visibility of at least 3 adult trees. There is a positive medium strong correlation between canopy cover and accessibility (Pearson\u27s r (10) = 0,567, p < 0.050). Planning larger green spaces with more adult trees and better connections could improve Ljubljana\u27s urban ecosystem in the future. Modeling the 3-30-300 rule is pioneering research that can help identify urban areas where more attention needs to be focused on green infrastructure planning
Learning Slovene in the Slovene Emigration Community in Cleveland with an Emphasis on Geographical Topics
Slovenski jezik v slovenski izseljenski skupnosti v Clevelandu ohranjajo z izvajanjem sobotnih šol v okviru dveh župnij, sv. Vida in sv. Marije Vnebovzete. The master\u27s thesis is based on the study of how the Slovenian emigrant community in Cleveland learns the Slovenian language with an emphasis on geographical topics. The Slovenian language is preserved in the Slovenian emigrant community in Cleveland by holding Saturday schools in two parishes, those of St Vitus and St Mary of the Assumption. The main purpose of this thesis is to create trial teaching material that will help learners of Slovenian and teachers learn about geographical features of Slovenia. The theoretical starting point is followed by an analysis of the geographical elements in the curriculum for supplementary classes of Slovenian abroad, and the teaching materials used in Saturday schools. Through the analysis, I gained insight into how much geographical content the curriculum and materials contain. Using the method of semi-structured interviews, I researched how supplementary Slovenian lessons are conducted in Saturday school, what geographical content is studied, and in what way this content is conveyed to the students. Based on the analysis of the curriculum, materials, and semi-structured interviews, I prepared experimental modern and interactive audio-visual material, which could be of help to teachers of Slovenian in teaching, and to learners of Slovenian in getting to know Slovenia
Structural, elastomechanical and acoustic properties of sycamore maple (Acer pseudoplatanus L.) wood with fiddleback figure
Fiddleback figure occurring in sycamore maple (Acer pseudoplatanus L.) wood is a well-known and documented phenomenon, but the same cannot be said about its effects on the physical, mechanical and acoustic properties and the dimensional stability of wood. In the study we sampled sycamore maple wood with present fiddleback figure as well as wood with regular grain. The structural properties were determined macroscopically and by light microscopy. The conditioned specimens were used to determine wood density, growth ring width and dimensional stability. Stifness of wood was determined by dynamic mechanical tests along and perpendicular to the grain and additionally by ultrasound in all anatomic wood directions. Static bending test was performed finally to determine static modulus of elasticity and bending strength. The fiddleback figure of maple on the microscopic level, in comparison with the straight grained wood, could not be clearly distinguished. The fiddleback figure showed no statistically significant effect on the density and dimensional stability of maple wood. The bending strength, dynamic and static moduli of elasticity of the two wood types were comparable. The damping of sound of maple wood with straight grain and maple with fiddleback figure along and transverse to the wood fibers was comparable
