    Which provides a better estimates of the growth rate of “true” U.S. output, gross domestic product (GDP) or gross domestic income (GDI)? Past work has assumed the idiosyncratic variation in each estimate is pure noise, taking greater variability to imply lower reliability. We develop models that relax this assumption, allowing the idiosyncratic variation in the estimates to be partly or pure news; then greater variability may imply higher information content and greater reliability. Based on evidence from revisions, we reject the pure noise assumption for GDI growth, and our results favor placing sizable weight on GDI growth because of its relatively large idiosyncratic variability. This calls into question the suitability of the pure noise assumption in other contexts, including dynamic factor models.

    Particles and Fields in Superfluids: Insights from the Two-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii Equation

    We study the dynamics of active particles in two-dimensional superfluids at temperature T=0T=0, for a variety of initial configurations, by carrying out extensive direct-numerical-simulations of the two-dimensional, Galerkin-truncated Gross-Pitaevskii equation. Our study elucidates the interplay of particles and fields, in both simple and turbulent flows. We show that particle collisions can be inelastic, if the repulsive interactions between particles is weak, and elastic otherwise. We show that assemblies of many particles and vortices yield turbulent spatiotemporal evolutions

    We start from the two-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) and develop algorithms for the ab-initio determination of the temperature (T) dependence of the mutual-friction coefficients, α and α, and the normal-fluid density Pn, which appear as parameters in the Hall-Vinen-Bekharevich-Khalatnikov (HVBK) two-fluid model for a superfluid. In the second part of our study, we elucidate the statistical properties of two-dimensional, homogeneous, isotropic superfluid turbulence in the simplified HVBK model, with values for the mutual-friction coefficients that are comparable to those we obtain from the first part of our study

    Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistichuman pathogen that routinely appears near the top ofpublic health threat lists worldwide. P. aeruginosa causes in-fections by secreting a wealth of exceptionally active exo-products, leading to tissue damage. The synthesis of manyof these virulence factors is now known to be under the con-trol of the quorum sensing (QS) system. Over the last15 years, the Pseudomonas quinolone signal (PQS) has beenfound to play a crucial role in QS by linking the two seg-ments (las and rhl) of the P. aeruginosa N-acylhomoserinelactone-dependent QS signaling pathways. Herein, we pres-ent the discovery and elucidation of PQS signaling froma historical perspective, and also outline some of the out-standing research questions that still need to be addressed.Finally, we show how a better understanding of the bio-chemistry underpinning this pathway is leading to the devel-opment of new antimicrobial interventions with clear thera-peutic potential

    Understanding intraday credit in large-value payment systems

    This article explains how large-value payment systems work, using either gross or net settlement. The author discusses risk control in a real-time gross settlement system and analyzes the pricing of credit to provide intraday liquidity. She argues for distinguishing between consumption/investment debt and payment debt. A theoretical model suggests that, under the assumption that there are no opportunities for intraday optimization of consumption and production, the risk-free rate on intraday payment credit should be zero. This is because the cost of intraday liquidity is a transaction cost of the underlying goods/assets trade and, thus, should be minimized.Payment systems ; Credit ; Debt ; Liquidity (Economics)

    A new Pseudomonas quinolone signal (PQS) binding partner: MexG

    The opportunistic pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa utilises the cell–cell signalling mechanism known as quorum sensing to regulate virulence. P. aeruginosa produces two quinolone-based quorum sensing signalling molecules; the Pseudomonas quinolone signal (PQS) and its biosynthetic precursor 2-heptyl-4(1H)-quinolone (HHQ). To date, only one receptor (the PqsR protein) has been identified that is capable of binding PQS and HHQ. Here, we report on the synthesis of PQS and HHQ affinity probes for chemical proteomic studies. The PQS affinity probe very effectively captured PqsR in vitro. In addition, we also identified an interaction between PQS and the “orphan” RND efflux pump protein, MexG. The PQS–MexG interaction was further confirmed by purifying MexG and characterizing its ability to bind PQS and HHQ in vitro. Our findings suggest that PQS may have multiple binding partners in the cell and provide important new tools for studying quinolone signalling in P. aeruginosa and other organisms

    Gross Job Flows in Ukraine: Size, Ownership and Trade Effects

    This paper documents and analyses gross job flows and their determinants in Ukraine using a data set of more than 2200 Ukrainian firms operating in manufacturing and non-manufacturing for the years 1998-2000. Job destruction dominates job creation in both 1999 and 2000. Another clear-cut result of our analysis is the strong positive effect of new private firms on net employment growth. We also find an inverse relationship between job reallocation and size for both manufacturing and non-manufacturing, while only in the latter sector is employment growth inversely related with size. The main focus of the paper is the effect of trade flows on employment adjustment in manufacturing. Our results show that both employment growth and job reallocation at the firm and two-digit sector level are affected by strong exposure to import competition and product market competition in export markets. These effects are more pronounced when we consider trade flows to the world at large and to the EU than when the analysis is based on trade flows to the CIS.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/39935/3/wp550.pd
