    “Le masculin l’emporte sur le feminin” - Pourquoi est-ce qu’il importe: Using Word Embeddings to Quantify the Effect of French “L’Écriture Inclusive”

    The French language is characterized by grammatical domination of the masculine gender over the feminine gender. It is widely posited that this grammatical gender inequality manifests itself as social gender inequality in French society. As a result, many feminist thinkers advocate for the widespread use of “écriture inclusive,” a collection of grammatical practices that seek to improve the visibility of women in the written language. Word embedding language models capture social and cultural biases in their mathematical encodings of words as vectors. These embeddings can be used to quantify social ideologies and social change. The goal of this work is to quantify the effects of “écriture inclusive” at improving gender equality. This is done through the construction of a French corpus dataset in which these writing practices appear frequently. This dataset is then used to train a word embeddings language model. The values of these word embeddings are then evaluated on the basis of their mathematical alignment with either the masculine or feminine gender. The results quantify the effects that “écriture inclusive” has on the status of women in French society and show that less masculine values are encoded in word vectors when using inclusive language word forms

    Review report of operational flood management methods and models

    Evacuation is a response to the immediate or forecast threat of flooding that is expected to pose a risk to life, health or well-being. It involves people moving from their houses or places of business to \u91safe\u92 locations, out of the flood risk area where they are able to shelter until it is possible and appropriate for them to return. This report summarises the institutional and legal frameworks for a number of European countries. The report details the user requirements with respect to evacuation planning for flood emergencies based on consultation with a number of stakeholders in France, Germany, The Netherlands and the UK. The following generic conclusions have been reached regarding evacuation planning and emergency management of floods: \u95 The timing, speed and method of communication of reports are critical to effective emergency management during a flood \u95 A knowledge of the road network, location of the vulnerable elements at risk and evacuation times are key to evacuation and emergency planning \u95 More robust and integrated communication links between the organisations involved in the response during a flood helps to ensure an effective response \u95 A flood event management system that provides estimates of flood extents and depths for breach scenarios would assist with emergency response \u95 Organised evacuation is only used as a form of emergency response in very rare circumstances. In most of Europe the authorities have no powers to forcible evacuate people from their houses during floods \u95 There is need for tools and methods to assist in the planning of evacuation/rescue operations and to estimate the optimal use of the transport network and the time required for execution of an evacuation \u95 There is little experience within the European Union (EU) with methods and models to support the planning and execution of evacuation and rescue operations related to floods.Floodsit

    The report provides a summary of the work that has been carried out in Task 17 under Theme 2 of the EC research project FLOODsite that focused on evacuation modelling and traffic management related to flood events. When flooding of populated areas occurs or is likely a management system for the road network in and around the flood prone areas is useful to carry out the following: \u95 Identify the routes for the safe evacuation of people \u95 To facilitate the access of the emergency and rescue personnel to the flood prone areas \u95 To prevent traffic using roads that have a high probability of becoming inundated.     D’une signification équivalente à la « civilisation » vers une conscience de la « culturalité » en mouvement, l’évolution des notions de culture et d’interculturel nous amène aujourd’hui dans une réflexion plus dynamique sur l’identité de la personne qui porte la culture et sur sa relation avec les autres. Ce dynamisme s’illustre notamment dans la perspective didactique du Français Langue Étrangère, en particulier dans l’enseignement de la littérature française en classe de FLE. Le texte littéraire, auparavant simple support pour la traduction, nous semble aujourd’hui un répertoire interculturel où prévalent les rencontres identitaires et culturelles entre l’auteur francophone et le lecteur étranger. Cette thèse tente d’éclaircir, sous l’angle d’une vision interdisciplinaire, l’appréhension de la culture et de l’interculturel dans l’enseignement du français et de la littérature française en classe de FLE, choisissant pour cadre d’étude le milieu universitaire chinois. En prenant appui sur des observations en classe et des entretiens auprès des enseignants chinois observés, nous avons effectué des réflexions relatives aux enjeux interculturels en didactique de la littérature française dans le contexte universitaire chinois. Cette recherche sur le terrain nous a permis de proposer des activités pédagogiques destinées aux apprenants chinois s’appuyant sur un corpus littéraire d’œuvres françaises du XXe siècle et qui permettent de faire émerger en classe de littérature de FLE, les réflexions sur le lien stéréotype et identité, sur la diversité des images, ainsi que sur l’altérité dans la relation avec les autres.From a signification of “civilization” to a consciousness of “culturality” with movement, the evolution of notions of culture and the intercultural leads us today to a more dynamic reflection concerning the culture bearer's identity and his relationship with others. This dynamism is notably apparent in the teaching of French as a foreign language, particularly when it is taught through the study of French literature. The literary text, once considered as simply material for translation, appears to us today to be an intercultural repertoire filled with identity and cultural contacts between the francophone author and the foreign reader. This thesis attempts to clarify, using an interdisciplinary approach, understanding of culture and the intercultural in French language and French literary teaching, choosing the Chinese university milieu as our object of study. Supported by observations in class and interviews with Chinese teachers, we have reflected on intercultural issues in French literary teaching in the Chinese university context. This research on the ground allows us to propose pedagogical activities for Chinese students, making use of a French literary corpus of the twentieth century, that encourage reflection about the link between stereotype and identity, image diversity, as well as alterity in relationships with others
