miRNA Alterations Elicit Pathways Involved in Memory Decline and Synaptic Function in the Hippocampus of Aged Tg4-42 Mice
The transcriptome of non-coding RNA (ncRNA) species is increasingly focused in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) research. NcRNAs comprise, among others, transfer RNAs, long non-coding RNAs and microRNAs (miRs), each with their own specific biological function. We used smallRNASeq to assess miR expression in the hippocampus of young (3 month old) and aged (8 month old) Tg4-42 mice, a model system for sporadic AD, as well as age-matched wildtype controls. Tg4-42 mice express N-truncated Aβ4–42, develop age-related neuron loss, reduced neurogenesis and behavioral deficits. Our results do not only confirm known miR-AD associations in Tg4-42 mice, but more importantly pinpoint 22 additional miRs associated to the disease. Twenty-five miRs were differentially expressed in both aged Tg4-42 and aged wildtype mice while eight miRs were differentially expressed only in aged wildtype mice, and 33 only in aged Tg4-42 mice. No significant alteration in the miRNome was detected in young mice, which indicates that the changes observed in aged mice are down-stream effects of Aβ-induced pathology in the Tg4-42 mouse model for AD. Targets of those miRs were predicted using miRWalk. For miRs that were differentially expressed only in the Tg4-42 model, 128 targets could be identified, whereas 18 genes were targeted by miRs only differentially expressed in wildtype mice and 85 genes were targeted by miRs differentially expressed in both mouse models. Genes targeted by differentially expressed miRs in the Tg4-42 model were enriched for negative regulation of long-term synaptic potentiation, learning or memory, regulation of trans-synaptic signaling and modulation of chemical synaptic transmission obtained. This untargeted miR sequencing approach supports previous reports on the Tg4-42 mice as a valuable model for AD. Furthermore, it revealed miRs involved in AD, which can serve as biomarkers or therapeutic targets
Mg–Ti nanoparticles with superior kinetics for hydrogen storage
Mg nanoparticles (NPs) with addition of Ti catalysts were synthesised by inert gas condensation and in situ hydrogenation at 150 °C. The NPs size and composition were systematically investigated by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and powder X-ray diffraction (PXD), while time resolved in situ synchrotron radiation-PXD was used to monitor the mechanism for hydrogen uptake and release at 280 °C. The Mg–Ti NPs reveal activation energies of 68 kJ mol−1 for absorption and 78 kJ mol−1 for desorption by isothermal kinetics analysis, similar to the lowest values reported in the literature for MgH2 using Nb2O5 as a catalyst. Hence, hydrogen desorption (pdes = 8 mbar) and absorption (pabs = 260 mbar) is achieved at 200 °C in ∼2000 s, while keeping 5.3 wt% storage capacity. Thermodynamic data extracted from van ’t Hoff plots reveal unchanged values compared to bulk MgH2. Therefore, the improved hydrogen storage performances are assigned to the enhanced kinetics only
Final Report for the LARS/Purdue - IBM Houston Scientific Center Joint Study Program
This report describes work performed during the second part of the LARS/IBM HSC Joint Study program which began April 1, 1971 and terminated April 1, 1972. Work during the first part of the study ending November 30, 1971 concentrated on analysis of the HSC vidicon film scanning system. Included was a comparison of data derived from this system and the LARS/U. of Michigan airborne multispectral scanner system. Comparison of vidicon digitized film and film digitized on a rotating drum microdensitometer was also included. This work is reported in IBM Publication No. 320.2421 First Interim Progress Report for IBM Houston Scientific Center/LARS - Purdue Joint Study Program. The second part of the study consisted of development of a closed boundary finding algorithm by IBM and its evaluation by LARS. The purpose of the algorithm is to enable automatic determination of boundaries, such as agricultural field boundaries, in digitized aerial or satellite imagery. The algorithm is described and a pictorial evaluation is presented in this report
Interpreting Wage Bargaining Norms
From the mid-1990s onwards, Swedish wage bargaining has been characterised by informal co-ordination of the wage claims of big unions and bargaining cartels. In particular, it has been understood that the manufacturing sector should lead by first agreeing on a pay increase, whereafter the service sector and public sector unions choose a similar increase. We analyse his setup with two possible theoretical interpretations: (i) the manufacturing sector as a tackelberg leader and (ii) a normative role for the manufacturing sector’s pay increase, upported either by unmodelled social pressure or a modeled loss aversion (envy) of the heltered sector unions. The conclusion of the analysis is that the normative or leading role of one sector – in the Swedish case the manufacturing sector – can potentially bring big benefits for employment and output. Generalising an idea suggested by Lars Calmfors and Anna Larsson, our analysis also generates a rudimentary theory of why the wage increase norm sometimes binds and sometimes not. A comparison of the model predictions and the observed outcomes of the last five wage bargaining rounds in Sweden suggests that the model is generally consistent with the empirical observations: wage moderation and norm observance are stronger when the manufacturing industry’s initial relative wage is low.wage bargaining; bargaining co-ordination
Boron-nitrogen based hydrides and reactive composites for hydrogen storage
Hydrogen forms chemical compounds with most other elements and forms a variety of different chemical bonds. This fascinating chemistry of hydrogen has continuously provided new materials and composites with new prospects for rational design and the tailoring of properties. This review highlights a range of new boron and nitrogen based hydrides and illustrates how hydrogen release and uptake properties can be improved. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd
