We thank Dr Spence for his interest in the 2020 International Society of Hypertension (ISH) Global Hypertension Practice Guidelines and highlighting what he considers blind spots in the new guidelines. Specifically, the author is concerned that Liddle syndrome, one of the rare monogenic causes of hypertension is not mentioned and its treatment not appropriately addressed in the 2020 ISH guidelines. Dr Spence provides insightful comments describing the central role of the epithelial sodium channel (ENaC) in Liddle syndrome which is responsible for its clinical features including early onset of salt-sensitive hypertension, hypokalemic metabolic alkalosis, and suppression of both renin and aldosterone secretion. Importantly, Liddle syndrome is associated with increased incidence
of premature cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events and usually unresponsive to mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists

Estimating content quality in the world wide web
The World Wide Web is used by an increasing number of people as an everexpanding source of information on almost every topic imaginable. However, useful data is often buried in large quantities of low-quality content. Estimation of content quality is valuable for diverse applications, such as search result ranking and direction of crawlers. In this text an approach is described to automatically determine author identity of web pages and compile data on author reputation in order to better estimate the quality of new content. The results of preliminary studies are presented which show the viability of the author reputation approach

The authors would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused. © 2024 The Author(s)This study investigated the potential of a novel sustainable ingredient composed of rapeseed oil, linseed meal and beta-glucan (PALM-ALT) to mimic palm shortening functionality in cake. The combined functional properties of linseed meal and beta-glucan led to stable semi-solid emulsion-gels (20–31 μm oil droplet size, 105–115 Pa.s viscosity and 60–65 Pa yield stress). PALM-ALT contained 25 and 88% less total and saturated fat than palm shortening, whilst PALM-ALT cakes contained 26 and 75% less total and saturated fat than the palm-based control. PALM-ALT cakes matched the flavour profile of the palm-based control, while rapeseed oil cakes tasted more sour and less sweet than the control (p < 0.05). PALM-ALT cakes proved less hard and more cohesive than the control (p < 0.05), with 100% of the consumer panel preferring PALM-ALT formulations. Cosmological parameter estimation using Very Small Array data out to ℓ= 1500
We estimate cosmological parameters using data obtained by the Very Small Array (VSA) in its extended configuration, in conjunction with a variety of other cosmic microwave background (CMB) data and external priors. Within the flat Λ cold dark matter (ΛCDM) model, we find that the inclusion of high-resolution data from the VSA modifies the limits on the cosmological parameters as compared to those suggested by the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) alone, while still remaining compatible with their estimates. We find that Ωbh2= 0.0234+0.0012−0.0014, Ωdmh2= 0.111+0.014−0.016, h= 0.73+0.09−0.05, nS= 0.97+0.06−0.03, 1010AS= 23+7−3 and τ= 0.14+0.14−0.07 for WMAP and VSA when no external prior is included. On extending the model to include a running spectral index of density fluctuations, we find that the inclusion of VSA data leads to a negative running at a level of more than 95 per cent confidence ( nrun=−0.069 ± 0.032 ), something that is not significantly changed by the inclusion of a stringent prior on the Hubble constant. Inclusion of prior information from the 2dF galaxy redshift survey reduces the significance of the result by constraining the value of Ωm. We discuss the veracity of this result in the context of various systematic effects and also a broken spectral index model. We also constrain the fraction of neutrinos and find that fν < 0.087 at 95 per cent confidence, which corresponds to mν < 0.32 eV when all neutrino masses are equal. Finally, we consider the global best fit within a general cosmological model with 12 parameters and find consistency with other analyses available in the literature. The evidence for nrun < 0 is only marginal within this model
Galaxy Zoo:chiral correlation function of galaxy spins
Galaxy Zoo is the first study of nearby galaxies that contains reliable information about the spiral sense of rotation of galaxy arms for a sizeable number of galaxies. We measure the correlation function of spin chirality (the sense in which galaxies appear to be spinning) of face-on spiral galaxies in angular, real and projected spaces. Our results indicate a hint of positive correlation at separations less than ~0.5 Mpc at a statistical significance of 2-3 sigma. This is the first experimental evidence for chiral correlation of spins. Within tidal torque theory it indicates that the inertia tensors of nearby galaxies are correlated. This is complementary to the studies of nearby spin axis correlations that probe the correlations of the tidal field. Theoretical interpretation is made difficult by the small distances at which the correlations are detected, implying that substructure might play a significant role, and our necessary selection of face-on spiral galaxies, rather than a general volume-limited sample

Soil microbial biomass as an indicator for soil health
Soil health is defined by productivity, such as forage growth and weight gains for grazing animals. An indicator for soil health, if available, would comprise of measurements on soil that would allow advanced prediction. Microbial biomass carbon (MBC) is a measurement of the quantity of microbes in soil, estimated by fumigation of soil by chloroform and extraction of the soluble carbon released. Given the microbes contribute to the success of plant growth, MBC was evaluated as a possible indicator for soil health under two grazing systems, continuous and planned, in a replicated and randomized field experiment. From theory, planned grazing is expected to generate greater soil health, because of a longer forage rest period combined with low selectivity of grazing. Values of MBC corresponding to 2.1% of total soil organic carbon (SOC) for the trial were consistent with values for grasslands reported across the North America and Europe. Over two years following establishment of the grazing trial, no difference in MBC could be discerned between grazing treatments. This outcome means that either MBC fails as an indicator of soil health, or else that more time is needed for differences in soil health, if there are any, to emerge between the two treatments. The second interpretation seems likely, because no differences in forage or animal production for the experimental site could be found in available data from related studies. Soil clay content varied from 5-30% across the experiment and increasing clay in soil was associated with a linear reduction in MBC and microbial biomass nitrogen (MBN). Most likely, this outcome relates to shielding by clays, which separates microbes from the organic matter they utilize, leading to a reduced quantity of microbes. Where possible, bulking of soil samples to average across textural variability should be employed to maximize sensitivity of MBC in attempts to discern any expected differences in soil health.Includes bibliographical references (pages 110-122)."In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science, Environmental and Life Sciences.
