Crew retrieve a Continuous Phytoplankton Recorder (CPR) from the stern of the Aurora Australis, Antarctic Ocean, 30 September 1997 [transparency] /
Title devised by cataloguer.; Part of the collection: Australian National Antarctic Research Expedition (ANARE), 1997-1998.; Recording the change of species with latitude, the CPR is dragged behind the Aurora Australis for 300 - 400 nautical miles at intervals until the ice edge is reached. The CPR collects marine organism samples such as Phyto plankton, and krill in a fine mesh, giving scientists an indication as to what species exist and to what abundance according to latitude.--Photographer.; Also available online at http://nla.gov.au/nla.pic-an20037022-9

A Russian aircraft, downed during take-off in 1964, lies covered in snow and surrounded by crevasses behind Mawson Station, Antarctica 27 December 1997 [electronic resource] /
Title devised by cataloguer.; Part of the collection: Australian National Antarctic Research Expedition (ANARE), 1997-1998.; The plane, a Russian equivalent of a Dakota DC3 had arrived in December 1968 to lay a fuel dump. Mawson was frequently used as a refuelling stop between the 2 Russian antarctic bases Mirny and Molodyezhnaya. Whilst taxiing down the Rumdoodle airstrip runway a strong gust of wind caught the plane and blew it into a crevasse, damaging the starboard wing and propeller. All of the crew were rescued, but the plane had been damaged beyond repair and remains a small reminder of past explorations in Antarctica.
