The effect of rosé wine colors on expected flavor and tastiness: A cross-modal correspondence explanation

    No full text
How and why do wines with different colors influence consumer responses? Despite strong evidence from research on cross-modal correspondences that food and drink colors influence flavor perceptions and subsequent consumer responses, it is unclear from the wine literature whether consumers prefer paler or slightly darker colors of ros´e. The aim of this research is twofold: (1) identify from an existing set of (relatively pale) prototypical color shades of Ros´e de Provence what specific color (paler vs. slightly darker) leads to more positive consumer responses and (2) shed light on the underlying mechanisms that explain this relationship. Using a large sample of French wine consumers (n = 601), we test our hypotheses via a within-subjects design experiment. We first examined the effect of five shades of Ros´e de Provence wines (nacre, light melon, sand, melon, and peach) on consumer responses (willingness to pay, willingness to buy, color liking). To further investigate the underlying roles of fruity flavor and expected tastiness (in that order), we conducted a series of two-condition withinsubjects serial mediations. Our findings consistently show more positive consumer responses for Ros´es de Provence with peach and melon shades (i.e., slightly darker colors) compared to nacre, light melon, and sand shades (i.e., paler colors). Further, a stronger association between slightly darker colors and fruity flavor enhances expected tastiness, which leads to more positive consumer responses. Our findings provide key theoretical contributions and managerial implications by suggesting consumer responses for Ros´es de Provence and corresponding explanations based on cross-modal correspondences.David A. Make it unique! Why embossed product labels increase purchase intentions and willingness to pay

    No full text
Article publication date: 27 August 2024Purpose – This paper aims to explore the influence of a particular label surface texture, i.e. embossing, on consumer purchase intentions and willingness to pay. This paper further highlights the underlying mechanisms explaining this relationship by unveiling the mediating role of willingness to touch and perceived package uniqueness. Design/methodology/approach – Based on the visual salience theory and the stimulus–organism–response (SOR) model, this paper tests mediations and serial mediations across two online experiments and evidence from a laboratory experiment. Findings – Study 1 reveals perceived package uniqueness as the mediator, such that embossed elements on the label increase perceived uniqueness, hence leading to greater purchase intentions and willingness to pay. In addition, Study 2 replicates these results and goes further by demonstrating the positive effect of embossing on purchase intentions and willingness to pay through willingness to touch then perceived package uniqueness. Practical implications – The findings provide insightful managerial implications by drawing attention to the importance of using embossed elements on packaging, particularly when companies seek to differentiate themselves from competitors by stimulating consumers to touch their product packaging and having them perceive their products as unique. Originality/value – Using visual salience theory and the SOR model, this research is, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, the first to shed light on the effect of embossing as a visual element of the packaging design on willingness to touch the product (haptics) and perceived uniqueness, ultimately enhancing purchase intentions and willingness to pay.Manon Favier, David A. EXPRESS: Curbing Adolescents’ Risky ‘Drinking’ Behavior with Authenticity

    No full text
First published online October 7, 2024Adolescents’ risky drinking behavior continues to be a public policy concern and insights into effective messages and behaviors that resonate with adolescents is needed. Evidence points to the potential of tapping into adolescents’ need for authenticity. Drawing on authenticity literature and implementing a mixed methods approach using family group interviews, followed by a 1x3 between-subject experiment with adolescents, this research conceptualizes a novel authentic engagement framework for reducing adolescent risky behavior. The findings identify and test that messages about drinking need to acknowledge positive aspects while warning of the negative consequences (i.e. mixed messages) across three dimensions - social, hedonic and safety. Alongside mixed messages, parents need to be honest about past experiences and align their behavior by acting as positive role models. Importantly, adolescents need an environment which enables them to experiment while having clear boundaries. Together this translates into openness and authenticity; critical for trust and the ability for adolescents to be true to themselves. The research has implications for parents and policy makers/marketers engaging with adolescents authentically about risky behavior, by providing information on message type and behaviors for effective training/educational programs and responsible drinking campaigns. The framework can be transferred to other contexts involving risky behavior.Alexandra C Hess, Sarah Dodds, David A Jaud, Claire Garnier, and Olivier Gergau

Designing for Co-created, memorable experiences in sustainable wine tourism: The moderating roles of eco-certification confusion and offering type

    No full text
This article examines how and when design characteristics (relational authenticity and visitor participation) influence word-of-mouth recommendations by co-creating memorable experiences in sustainable wine tourism. It also investigates the moderating effects of (1) visitor confusion about ecological certifications and (2) the type of wine tourism offering. Drawing on the S-O-R framework, we developed and tested six hypotheses using field survey data collected at three sustainability-oriented wine tourism sites offering distinct experiences. We found that experience memorability mediates the relationship between design characteristics and visitor recommendations. Moreover, eco-certification confusion and offering type partially moderate the effects of design characteristics on memorability. This study contributes to wine tourism research by: (1) identifying key design characteristics that enable the co-creation of a memorable experience and drive positive word-of-mouth; (2) demonstrating that eco-certification confusion amplifies the impact of relational authenticity on memorability; and (3) suggesting that different offerings require different design choices.Francois Durrieu, Frederic Ponsignon, David A. Design metrics for evaluating the propulsive efficiency of future ships

    No full text
There is an increasing need for the ship design process to take account of environmental issues such as the emission of greenhouse gases and the likely extension of a carbon dioxide charging mechanism to international shipping. These issues, together with the need for economic viability, provide further incentives to improve the efficiency of propulsion of ships. The main components of powering are firstly reviewed. Individual components and other power saving devices are identified which should contribute to improvements in the overall efficiency of propulsion. Suitable design metrics and procedures, taking into account economic and environmental factors, are recommended for the design of future ships

Brief note: some observations on oscillating tangential forces and wear in general plane contacts

    No full text
For general plane contact of elastically similar materials, including cases where there are multiple regions of contact, general properties of the partial slip solution for conditions of constant normal force and monotonically increasing shearing force have been found recently by the first author. An extension is given here to cover the unloading and cyclic loading cases. Further, it is shown that, if the tangential load varies between two fixed limits, the region of stick does not change, even if relative microslip causes wear, changing continuously the profile of the indenter. The contact area will change, but wear will not enter the original region of adhesion. The theoretical limit to which wear will eventually, asymptotically proceed is established, viz. almost complete contact over what is the initial stick zone, although it may, in practice, take a long time to reach this state

The description of Kabarda by D.A. Milutin in the context of the cauсasus version of russian orien-talism foundation

The paper pertains to the analysis of a manuscript authored by D.A. Milutin in the first half of the 19th century, regarding the region of Kabarda. This manuscript, hitherto unpublished in academic circles, has been the subject of our examination. Our endeavor was to uncover the utilization of orientalist clichés by the manuscript's author, in order to depict both the geographical delineations of this ethno-political entity and the ethnography, livelihood, societal structure, and customary legal norms of its inhabitants. A remarkable parallel can be observed between certain aspects of the manuscript and the ideas propounded by E. Said in his discourse on European Orientalism. The researcher drew a comparison between the political framework and traditions of the Kabardian people and those prevalent in Europe. Moreover, the researcher romanticized the region's historical past, employing the conceptof "reverse human progress," along with other typical methodologies embraced by Orientalist thinkers of that era. Concomitantly, D.A. Milutin provided detailed descriptions of the political, social, and everyday existence in Kabarda, thereby endowing the manuscript with an intrinsic value as an original historical and cultural resource for contemporary scholars. It is concluded that, similar to numerous analogous texts produced by Orientalist scholars, the significance of D.A. Milutin's man-uscript lies not in its political arguments concerning the military and economic dominion of the Russian Empire over the Caucasian peoples, or the imperative to extend colonial governance to these ethnic territorie

Elements of Ethnotaxonomy in Dhule and Nandurbar Districts (Maharashtra)

Dhule and Nandurbar districts of Maharashtra are mainly inhabited by tribals and rural folks. The author’s ethnobotanical and floristic forays in these districts brought out certain elements of ethnotaxonomy like ethnotaxonomic markers, classifications, principles of nomenclature and exomorphic features.  The facts gathered indicated that the people in the area are fairly flooded with reckonable elements of ethnotaxonomy.  And 22 ethnotaxonomic markers are identified. These are evaluated and discussed pertinently in this paper.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Post Graduate Department of Botany, S.S.V.P.S’s L.K. The dynamical influences of a hard transition zone on post-glacial uplifts and rotational signatures

    No full text
Recent investigations from laboratory and Monte-Carlo inversion of geophysical signatures have suggested that the transition zone of the mantle between 400 and 670 km depth may be stiffer than the lower and the upper mantle. By means of a five-layer viscoelastic spherical Earth model, we have calculated the displacement fields associated with post-glacial rebound, the induced polar motions, the temporal variations of the coefficients of the geopotential up to degree eight and the stress fields induced by deglaciation in the lithosphere and the upper mantle. Temporal variations of stress fields in the lithosphere reveal a non-monotonic behaviour due to the viscosity stratification. The results demonstrate the importance of the coming LAGEOS II geodetic satellite mission on constraining the rheological nature of the transition zone in the mantle. -from Author
