Definitions of "Chord" in the Teaching of Tonal Harmony

    No full text
In North America, there has been a growing tendency in recent years to include pop-rock examples in undergraduate tonal-harmony classes. Yet by incorporating pop-rock music into the classical harmony classroom, teachers come face to face with some of the fundamental differences between the harmonic idioms of these two styles. Assuming we continue to incorporate pop-rock music in the classical harmony classroom and do not give it its own separate course, the question becomes whether we should use pop-rock excerpts only to the extent that they can serve as illustrations of classical idioms, or instead engage pop-rock music on its own terms. If we choose the latter option, and endeavor to move beyond a treatment of pop-rock music that is somewhat tokenistic (if well-intentioned), we must then also decide whether those pop-rock-music ‘terms’ be defined in ways classical musicians would define them (etic-ally), or in ways pop-rock musicians would define them (emic-ally).Peer reviewe

Transformation in Rock Harmony: An Explanatory Strategy

    No full text
Musical transformation is an extremely broad, abstract explanatory concept, capable of covering not just instances of radical conversion but, in fact, all degrees of musical change. When it comes to rock, transformations are among the most powerful and talked-about musical effects. Many of these effects are harmonic, and this article seeks to give voice to a number of these. To this end, I will present several musical examples from the rock repertoire that will help clarify some common kinds of harmonic transformations, as well as some common kinds of harmonic structures involved in such transformations.Peer reviewe

Conceptual design of an anthropomorphic shake doll: Development of requirements for an anthropomorphic shake doll and design of an artificial joint for investigating the infant’s body kinematics during shaking.

    No full text
Infant shaking can cause serious damage (inflicted head injury by shaking trauma), it’s occurrence indicates the necessity for infant protection. To ensure reliable jurisprudence, it is important to know the exact consequences of shaking on an infant’s body. These consequences can be researched by the use of an anthropomorphic shake doll. With this doll, shake experiments can be performed in order to better understand the kinematics of the body and body parts during shaking. This study aims to establish design criteria for this doll as well as designing, producing and testing the joints for this model. A requirement list is presented, as well as a design for a joint that can be used for the limbs of the doll. To ensure structural integrity of this design, a representation of the joint was created and an indicative mechanical shake test was performed. Building further on this, real life prototypes have been made.Biomedical Engineerin

Reflektion om spegelfasen i Russian Doll

    No full text
The author of this essay conducts a close reading of the American Netflix series Russian Doll and applies the psychoanalytical term the mirror stage on the series characters and premise. The mirror stage was presented by psychoanalyst Jaques Lacan during the 1930’s and ever since Jaques Lacan presented his theory, it has been applied to both life and movies. In the analysis of this paper the author will determine whether the mirror stage works as a catalysator to the characters and their evolvement

Structural and electronic stability of Russian-doll -style Sc4C2C80, 2011

Recent experimental work reported the synthesis, isolation and characterization of a Russian-doll-style endohedral fullerene, encompassing a carbon dimer within a scandium tetrahedron, all encased by a C80 cage. We have first investigated the equilibrium conformations and the associated charge transfer of the endohedral fullerene Sc4C2C80 based on first-principles density functional calculations; and secondly its electronic properties based on first-principles density functional calculations coupled with many-body GW correction. In the first part our results show that a distorted tetrahedron Sc4 cluster enfolding around the C2 dimer has the desired electronic structure that leads to efficient charge transfer to the open-shell icosahedral C80. A detailed analysis of the charge transfer between the Sc4C2 configurations and the icosahedral C80 cage indicate that the structural stability of the Russian-doll structured Sc4C2@C80 can be attributed to the donor-acceptor effects. In the second part, the calculation results yield a GW rectified gap of 1.8 eV for the Russian-doll structured Sc4C2@C80, in very good conformity with experimental observed value of 1.6 eV. The calculated electronic characteristics of the Russian-doll fullerene reveal distinct shell structures which are embellished in the GW approach. The analysis of vibrational frequency demonstrates profound hybridizations associated with the interactions between the Sc4C2 core and the C80 shell
