Ecclesiastical Vestments as Works of Art: Intertexuality, Meaning and Design. Volume 1: Main Text.
This thesis will investigate the development of a symbolism without doctrinal presuppositions in a programme of vestments commissioned by the Anglican church and worked in tandem with the academic research. It seeks relations to two areas, first, in aesthetics/art by looking specifically at the post-1950, abstract painting of Mark Rothko and secondly, in theology, with emphasis on the post-1980 writing of Don Cupitt. The hermeneutical theory of Paul Ricoeur is drawn upon to give structure to, and to assist in, the interpretation of the texts of Rothko, Cupitt and the author/artist. The overall aim is to show how, through less dogmatic ecclesiastical symbolism, it might be possible to promote and enhance a contemporary, liberal approach to churchmanship by opening up opportunities for the autonomous reader/viewer to become involved with the artist in the creative process of a philosophical pursuit of the nature of God

The Ocean of Truth
This short 1988 book offers an alternative reading of the impact of modernity on Christian faith to that advanced by Don Cupitt in the TV series and book The Sea of Faith. It is a spirited defence of belief in the objective reality of God and in life after death, as opposed to Cupitt's radically interiorised and expressivist conception of religion. As attractive as many may find a denial of the traditional doctrines of the Church in favour of an anti-metaphysical, non-dogmatic expressivist version of Christian faith, Hebblethwaite insists that of greater importance is the question of truth at stake here, and it is on the question of truth that he focusses his attention. After arguing against Cupitt's response to the modern situation, the author tries to show how belief in an objective God is not only possible despite the impact of modern science and historical criticism, but indeed highly plausible.</jats:p

Advanced optical imaging methods for investigating manuscripts
This paper gives an overview of advanced optical imaging methods relevant to the study of manuscripts. While some of the methods covered are well established, others are very much in active development. ‘Optical’ in this context is loosely defined to cover the near ultraviolet, visible and the near infrared part of the electromagnetic spectrum. Optical imaging methods are in general non-destructive and can be applied in situ. They are non-invasive if care is taken to ensure a safe dosage of illumination during the imaging process. The examples given in this paper are biased towards work that the author has been involved in. This is by no means a comprehensive review. The aim of the paper is to illustrate how advanced optical imaging techniques can assist in the investigation of manuscripts
Iris Murdoch and the others a writer in dialogue with theology
"The "others" examined by Fiddes are mainly those with whom Murdoch entered into explicit dialogue in her novels and philosophical writing-including Immanuel Kant, Simone Weil, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Rudolph Bultmann, Paul Tillich, Don Cupitt, Donald Mackinnon, and Jacques Derrida. This "historic" dialogue is, however, placed within a wider dialogue between literature and theology being conducted by the author, and "others" are brought into relation with Murdoch in order to illuminate this more extensive conversation-notably the poet Gerard Manley Hopkins and the feminist philosopher Julia Kristeva. The book demonstrates that characteristic themes in Murdoch's novels and philosophy-the love of the Good, the death of the ego, illusory consolations, the death of God, the modifying of the will by "waiting", the sublime and the beautiful, and attention to other things and persons-all take on a greater meaning when placed in the context of her life-long conversation with theology. The exploration of this context is deepened in this volume by reference to annotations and notes that Murdoch made in a number of theological books in her personal library.
studies in the doctrine and worship of the Church of England (1976-2000)
The aim of this MA Thesis is to provide a research in the Church of England doctrine and worship from the 1970s till almost the present day. In order to meet its aims, the research is largely based on the analysis of the Reports of the Doctrine Commission of the Church of England, from "Christian Believing" (1976) till "The Mystery of Salvation" (1995). Analysis of the background of the Reports is also provided, as well as a general evaluation of the role these Reports play in the life of the Church of England. The main intention of this thesis is to follow two major themes, expressed in a variety of ways: the topic of Trinitarian theology and the issue of corporate consciousness in the Church of England. Trinitarian theology is mostly dealt with in Chapter 3, which analyses the texts engaging with doctrinal questions in an explicit way and aims at demonstrating that the Church of England holds firmly to a Trinitarian theology as the doctrinal basis for its descriptive theology, spirituality and praxis. The issue of corporate consciousness and analysis of worship and liturgy are tackled in Chapter 4.Historically the identity of the Church of England was defined by the claim that its doctrine is to be found in the liturgy. Nowadays when the Anglican worship does not follow a single uniform pattern, such an approach cannot be regarded as viable. The thesis aims at answering this issue by the holistic approach to the studies of the doctrine and worship in the Church of England, when both strands are considered together. Although done from an 'outsider' point of view, the research claims to be comprehensive in its scope and provides a number of reflections and practical recommendations as the Church of England enters the 21'' century
The translation of identity in the satanic verses: a love song to our mongrel selves
This thesis examines the translation of character identities within Salman Rushdie's novel, The Satanic Verses, and seeks to demonstrate how the dynamics of translating a text can be used as a model for discussing the transformations of characters within the book. Rushdie uses the term "translation" as a metaphor for the migrant experience of uprootedness that is a result of being "borne across" from one culture to another. From it, however, can be derived a metaphor for the universal experience of alienation that is a part of our shared humanity, and which describes the process of responding to a sense of "otherness" within ourselves and within a pluralistic culture. The framework which will be used to examine characters within The Satanic Verses responding to such conditions is George Steiner's translation hermeneutic outlined and discussed In his book. After Babel: Aspects of Language and Translation. The Introduction will set the context for the use of the term "translation”. Chapter One will discuss Steiner's position within translation theory and Rushdie's affinity to it as well as explain the basic translation model. Chapters Two through Five will look closely at Rushdie's text, analyzing the two protagonists, Gibreel and Saladin, as they undergo, or fail to undergo, the translation process. Finally, the conclusion will suggest that the Rushdie affair engendered by this novel is, ironically, a linguistic debate provoked by a text that urges its readers to be translated. By making its readers acutely aware of what is "other" to them, the The Satanic Verses proposes and attempts to answer a single, profoundly religious, question: "How are we to live in the world?
Matthew’s Emmanuel Messiah: a paradigm of presence for god's people
The motif of divine presence is a clear phenomenon within the Gospel of Matthew. The modern critical means for assessing the ancient biblical text have multiplied to the point, some claim, of disparity. This study employs both narrative and redaction criticism in an attempt to respond authentically to the structural, historical and theological dimensions of Matthew's Gospel. This study begins with the presumption of the wholeness and integrity of Matthew's narrative, and assumes the gospel story to have an inherently dramatic structure which invites readers to inhabit imaginatively its narrative world and respond to its call. But since we are concerned with the role of both reader and author, this study also assumes a text with an historical author and context. The introduction focuses on the meta-critical dilemma facing New Testament students - what is the text and how do we read it? - and seeks some balance in terms of Krieger's analogy of the text as both window and mirror. Proposed is a narrative reading of Matthew's presence motif alongside a redaction critical assessment of it. In Chapter 2 the elements of narrative theory are introduced and relevant terms defined: the structure of narrative, the function of the narrator, points of view. Chapter 3 becomes an exercise in narrative reading, with Matthew's presence motif providing the focus, and the implied reader’s interaction with the story being predominant in interpretation. Characters, rhetorical devices, and points of view are discussed, to understand the motif's development throughout the story's progress. The thrust of Chapter 4 is thereafter to examine divine presence as a dominant motif within Matthew's most important literary context: the Jewish scriptures. Here the primary paradigms of divine presence provided by the Patriarchs, the Sinai experience, and the Davidic-Zion traditions are assessed. Chapter 5 follows with a more detailed examination of the OT "I am with you/God is with us" formula and its µeo' vµwv/ηuwv language, so strongly connected to Matthew's presence motif. Chapters 6-8 build on these investigations with a closer analysis of the three critical "presence passages" of Mt 1:23. 18:20 and 28:20. The passages and their contexts are probed from a redaction critical perspective, guided by the narrative investigation of Chapter 3, and the background from Chapters 4 and 5.The three major "presence passages" examined in Chapters 6-8 are also complimented by a number of secondary issues: worship, wisdom, the Spirit and the poor in Matthew, and their relation to Jesus' divine presence. These are discussed in Chapter 9. Chapter 10 summarizes and looks briefly at some implications. Matthew' presence motif proves to be an important element of the Gospel’s rhetorical design, redactional strategy and Christology. The presence of Jesus, the Emmanuel Messiah, exhibited in his risen authority, becomes the focus of his people's hopes and experiences in the post-Easter world. What the presence of Yahweh was to his people. Jesus now provides in a new paradigm for his people - his followers, the little ones, the poor and the marginalized, from all nations
The Christian Message in a Postmodern World: a critical re-appropriation of Hendrik Kraemer's theology of religions
This thesis is a critical re-appropriation of Hendrik Kraemer's theology of religions. Part I introduces theology of religions through the now familiar threefold typology: Kari Earth represents 'exclusivism,' Kari Rahner, 'inclusivism,' and John Hick, 'pluralism' (Chapter 1). It then argues that the typology implicitly represents non-pluralist approaches as theologically deficient and ethically insensitive while masking problems in pluralist positions (Chapter 2). It thus releases Kraemer from the typology and from the more emotive charges directed against 'exclusivism.' Part II chronologically and thematically surveys Kraemer's theology of religions, describing his missiological and theological contexts (Chapter 3) and summarising his major works (Chapter 4). The crux of the argument comes in Part III. First, a survey of the contemporary philosophical climate is offered through a summary and critique of Jean-Frangois Lyotard's interpretation of the postmodern condition Subsequently, three theological responses are assessed with Mark C. Taylor's a/theology and John Milbank's theology presented as avoidable extremes while the work of Hans Frei and George Lindbeck is offered as a mediating position which is dubbed 'postmodern orthodoxy' (Chapter 5). Second, after reviewing key themes in Kraemer's position, theological and phenomenological criticisms are outlined and evaluated. Though they do not seriously threaten the position, these criticisms prohibit extreme interpretations of, and lead to slight modifications in, Kraemer's work (Chapter 6). Finally, when re-read through the lenses of postmodern orthodoxy, Kraemer's thought is shown to offer to contemporary theology of religions avenues of theological creativity which are nevertheless faithful to the Christian tradition (Chapter 7). The thesis concludes that Hendrik Kraemer's theology of religions is worthy of critical re- appropriation
