ADAM SMITH'S OPTIMISTIC TELEOLOGICAL VIEW OF HISTORY
Get PDFAdam Smith's four-stage theory provides the framework for his writings on history. The fourth stage is the commercial epoch; the culmination of history in this stage is a key component in the conventional interpretation of Adam Smith as a prophet of commercialism. In two historical case studies Smith shows the capacity of commercial society to regenerate itself. This potent capacity suggests that commercial society is inevitable. At a certain point in time it also overcomes the major obstacles to its permanence. Smith's philosophy of history anticipates the end of history views of Kant and Hegel.Political Economy,

Aim: The aim is to describe, map, and evaluate the athletic career of high jumper Jaroslav Bába through a biographical study. Methodos: the work is divided into two parts. The first part of the thesis contains a summary of all articles from the beginning of Jaroslav Baba's top sports career in 2002 to its end in 2018. I chose the daily Mladá fronta DNES as a credible source. I then recorded the articles in a graph and described the influence of Jaroslav Bába's positioning on the frequency of articles. I also categorised the articles using content analysis and then recorded them in a graph. At the end of the first part of the paper, I recorded in a graph the authors with the highest number of articles about Jaroslav Baba in the periodical under study. I used the methodologies of processing historically obtained documents from the thesis of Jan Volf (2007), Alena Chocholová (2008), Martin Tesárek (2010) and Miroslav Matěcha (2011). The second part of the thesis contains information obtained from Jaroslav Bába from a guided interview. Cíle práce: Cílem je popsat, zmapovat, zhodnotit sportovní kariéru výškaře Jaroslava Báby v rámci biografické studie. Metodika práce: práce je rozdělena do dvou částí. První část práce obsahuje souhrn všech článků od začátku vrcholné sportovní kariéry Jaroslava Báby v roce 2002 až po její konec v roce 2018. Jako věrohodný zdroj jsem si vybral deník Mladá fronta DNES. Články jsem následně zaznamenal do grafu a popsal vliv úspěchů Jaroslava Báby na četnost článků. Články jsem také pomocí obsahové analýzy kategorizoval a následně zaznamenal do grafu. Na závěr první části práce jsem zaznamenal do grafu autory s největším počtem článků o Jaroslavu Bábovi ve sledovaném periodiku. Použil jsem metodiky zpracování historicky získaných dokumentů z diplomové práce Jana Volfa (2007), Aleny Chocholové (2008), Martina Tesárka (2010) a Miroslava Matěchy (2011). Druhá část práce obsahuje informace získané od Jaroslava Báby z řízeného rozhovoru. Výsledky práce: Pomocí obsahové analýzy a následně i statisticky, jsem zpracoval celkem 837 článků, týkajících se průběhu sportovní kariéry Jaroslava Báby. How Might Adam Smith Pay Professors Today?
Get PDFAdam Smith’s proposal for paying professors was intended to induce increased faculty knowledge. If students have imperfect information about what they learn, and universities can only imperfectly measure the input of faculty time in student learning, publications may be used to measure faculty knowledge. If professors’ ability to publish is positively related to their ability to produce student learning, which universities can imperfectly measure, publications may be necessary to attract more able professors. Since research signals faculty knowledge, schools that do not value publications per se could require higher publication standards and pay higher wages than schools that value only publications.

ADAM SMITH'S VIEW OF HISTORY: CONSISTENT OR PARADOXICAL?
Get PDFThe conventional interpretation of Adam Smith is that he is a prophet of commercialism. The liberal capitalist reading of Smith is consistent with the view that history culminates in commercial society. The first part of the article develops this optimistic interpretation of Smith's view of history. Smith implies that commercial society is the end of history because 1) it supplies the ends of nature that he identifies; 2) it is inevitable; and 3) it is permanent. The second part of the article shows that Smith has some dark moments in his writings where he seems to reject completely such teleological notions. In this more civic humanist mood he confesses that commercial society does not supply the ends of nature, nor is it inevitable, nor is it permanent. Both views exist in Smith and the commentator is forced to choose between passages in Smith's work in order to support a particular interpretation of the former's view of history.Political Economy,

Victims of Modernity. The Image of Capitalist Modernisation in Jaroslav Rudiš’s Fiction
Get PDFIn this article, the author analyses the novel The National Valley (2016) by the contemporary Czech writer Jaroslav Rudiš. The main argument of the analysis focuses on the concept of modernity and modern subjectivity as outlined by the American philosopher, Marshall Berman, who in his book All That Is Solid Melts into Air (1988) describes modernity as a process of constant changes in reality. The author of the article interprets the Czech capitalist system after 1989 as a process of modernisation that forces certain elements of reality to disappear. Using the tools of semiotics provided by Yuri Lotman (1984), he analyses the structure of space in the novel, whilst also focusing on the issues of masculinity, family relations and subjectivity in capitalist modernity. The protagonist of the novel, shaping his identity in opposition to the current model of modernity, has only limited possibilities of achieving subjectivity. The values he considers important do not fit into the realities of modernity, which means that the protagonist, as well as the milieu he inhabits, is doomed to marginalisation

Prague 2025 Abstrakt Jednota a rozmanitost v Korintu: Raně křesťanské spory o význam pokrmů obětovaných modlám Tato práce rozvíjí a aplikuje metodu s cílem vyčlenit výroky vnořené do textu 1 Kor 8-10. Vnořenými výroky se rozumí ty výroky, které Pavel používá tak, jak je převzal od svých adresátů, a to jak z písemného nebo ústního pramene, použité doslova nebo citované volně. Ve starověké literatuře takové výroky nebývaly formálně uváděny, což má za následek, že moderní překladatelé a čtenáři často stěží dokáží určit, kde autor začíná citovat a kde zase vstupuje do textu sám. Tyto výroky jsou pak v práci kategorizovány jako původní Pavlovy nebo jako výroky jednoho ze dvou výrazných postojů, které v Korintě existovaly o pokrmech obětovaných modlám. Následně jsou analyzovány argumenty, kterými byl křesťan přesvědčován k tomu, aby se postavil k otázce pokrmů obětovaných modlám.
