Tree-child Network Containment
Interest in phylogenetic trees for histories of species and DNA has spawned many problems, one of which is TreeContainment; a problem that asks whether a tree is contained within a network. The TreeContainment problem is proven to be NP-hard for general trees and networks, however it is solvable in polynomial time for networks that meet the tree-child restriction. An algorithm to solve TreeContainment for binary tree-child networks has been created previously with quadratic running time (van Iersel, Semple, Steel, 2010). Janssen and Murakami have recently created a new algorithm that solves a larger problem NetworkContainment, for semi-binary tree-child networks (Janssen, Murakami, 2019). This new algorithm uses tree-child sequences introduced by Linz and Semple, but there has not been an implementation of it until now. In this paper I show an implementation (using Python) of this algorithm, in which I have made a modification that increases its speed on networks with large indegrees. Furthermore I have proven in this paper that the output of this algorithm remains correct under this modification, and that the running time of the modified algorithm is now linear without requiring a constant maximum indegree at all.Applied Physic

Cryostat Control: Real time control for a cryogenic refrigerator
In order to measure the spectrum of radio emissions from galaxies and other deep space objects, a new superconducting spectrometer, working at very cold temperatures close to the absolute zero, is developed. An advanced cooling system called a cryostat is used to cool down the spectrometer. The cool down of the cryostat involves the control of multiple sensors and actuators connected to the cryostat to achieve a final temperature below 250 millikelvin. A software program is used for this purpose. As extra hardware components have been added to the cryostat, the existing program does no longer fulfill the requirements. For this reason a new software program, which can monitor temperatures of all components and start control processes, is developed. The developed program consists of a client server structure. The server handles the logic of the cryostat using several controllers. It can send data to a native client, which is the graphical user interface, or a REST API. The native client displays sensor readouts received from the server and allows full control of server, which means it can start the cool down process as well as manual control processes. The REST API allows the user to have full control over the server using a Python script to achieve measurements which cannot be done from the native client. The increased automation, improved control and ability to integrate with external Python scripts allow the user to focus on the essential parts of an experiment making the developed program an improvement over the previous program
How to ensure control of cooperative vehicle and truck platoons using meaningful human control
Vehicle cooperation, not vehicle automation, will yield the greatest benefits on road traffic. However, satisfactory human control over platoons of cooperative vehicles still has a large number of uncertainties and issues to be addressed. This paper aims to address these broader issues of control over a cooperative vehicle platoon by focussing on a truck platooning system as a case example, and taking the perspective of Meaningful Human Control (MHC) as control concept. MHC goes further than mere operational control as it addresses issues that exist in current system designs, and proposes improvements based on a novel and more encompassing set of conditions for control. These issues are addressed in regard to the vehicles and their Operational Design Domains (ODD), the role and ability of the drivers (both leading and following) and how these exist in regard to their road environment. We conclude that current advances are making progress, but that from a MHC perspective, issues still remain for the operational and tactical implementation of truck platoons and cooperative driving that need to be addressed in regard to ODDs and drivers. Furthermore, consideration of responsibility and liability aspects is required that stretches beyond nominal appointment thereof, as this does not satisfy important ethical and societal standards. This is demonstrated in the paper through two hypothetical cases focussing on issues on a system level and one further analysis which is focussed on the role of the driver in the platooning system
