Stability in flux: Community structure in dynamic networks
No full textThe structure of many biological, social and technological systems can usefully be described in terms of complex networks. Although often portrayed as fixed in time, such networks are inherently dynamic, as the edges that join nodes are cut and rewired, and nodes themselves update their states. Understanding the structure of these networks requires us to understand the dynamic processes that create, maintain and modify them. Here, we build upon existing models of coevolving networks to characterize how dynamic behaviour at the level of individual nodes generates stable aggregate behaviours. We focus particularly on the dynamics of groups of nodes formed endogenously by nodes that share similar properties (represented as node state) and demonstrate that, under certain conditions, network modularity based on state compares well with network modularity based on topology. We show that if nodes rewire their edges based on fixed node states, the network modularity reaches a stable equilibrium which we quantify analytically. Furthermore, if node state is not fixed, but can be adopted from neighbouring nodes, the distribution of group sizes reaches a dynamic equilibrium, which remains stable even as the composition and identity of the groups change. These results show that dynamic networks can maintain the stable community structure that has been observed in many social and biological systems

No full textThe Department of History’s Sebastian Garcia attended this year’s annual FHS symposium event which is hosted every October at the University of Central Florida. Being one of the most significant historical events of the year for Florida history and culture, Sebastian wanted to capture the essence of this unique and imperative event by doing on-the-spot, raw, “quick chat” interviews with as many people that were involved with this event—from directors to panelists—as possible. Abstrakt: V predložené disertacní práci zkoumáme sílu slabých fragmentu arit- metiky. Činíme tak jak z modelově-teoretického pohledu, tak z pohledu důkazové složitosti. Pohled skrze teorii modelu naznačuje, že malý iniciální segment libo- volného modelu omezené aritmetiky bude modelem silnější teorie. Jako příklad ukážeme, že každý polylogaritmický řez modelu V0 je modelem VNC. Užitím známé souvislosti mezi fragmenty omezené aritmetiky a dokazatelností v ro- zličných důkazových systémech dokážeme separaci mezi rezolucí a TC0 -Frege systémem na náhodných 3CNF-formulích s jistým poměrem počtu klauzulí vůci počtu proměnných. Zkombinováním obou výsledků dostaneme slabší separační výsledek pro rezoluci a Fregeho důkazové systémy omezené hloubky. Analysis and design of an information system for private language teachers

The first goal was to find out information needs by using unstructured interviews with private foreign language teachers. The second goal is the detailed analysis and interpretation of the data from the interviews and a design of the functionality of the according to the discovered information needs using the UML notation. Breadwinner or caregiver? - how household role affectslabor choices in Mexico
No full textRecent volatility in the Mexican economy, has required households to alter patterns of participation in the labor force, voluntarily or not. The author uses panel data to examine patterns of labor force entry among adult men, and women with different household responsibilities, asking whether gender is a primary determinant, shaping these patterns. She finds that labor supply patterns are driven more by household role, than by gender. Heads of households, regardless of sex, behave similarly. Women who have neither spouses, nor children behave more like men, than like married women. They are also more likely than any other group to have inflexible, higher-paying jobs in the formal sector - which raises the question: Do employers discriminate, based on gender, or on household structure? She also detects a strong added-worker effect among secondary workers, a result not detected in the labor markets of developed countries that have social insurance programs. Finally she finds that wives'choice of sector during downturns, is subject to the households'earning needs, that husbands use informal wage, or contract employment as an employer of last resort, only in response to negative income shocks to the household, and that single mothers do not select the informal sector over the formal sector in response to either expected, or realized negative income shocks. The policy implications? Interventions that target women aren't necessarily appropriate, because women are heterogeneous. Public finance, trade, and development : the Chilean experience
No full textThis paper analyzes the role of public finance and trade policies in the adjustment experience of Chile over the past 15 years. The purpose is to first review the Chilean public sector and trade reforms, and then to examine their role in the economic development of Chile. The paper is divided into six sections. After the Introduction, Section II presents a brief summary of the conditions in 1973 on the eve of the shift in Chilean policy. Section III focuses on the main policy reforms introduced by the military government over the 1973-82 period. Section IV takes a detailed look at Chile's public finance and trade reforms. The effect of the reforms on aggregate incentives and on the macroeconomic adjustment is the subject of Section V. Lastly, Section VI presents the following main conclusions. First, liberalization and stabilization reforms succeeded until late 1978 in slowing down inflation. Second, the reduction of a large public sector deficit required strong action. Third, the elimination of a large public sector deficit is a necessary but not sufficient condition for the control of inflation. Mixing Realities: Combining Extended and Physical Reality in Co-Creative Design for the Galley of the Flying-V
No full textThis thesis explores combining Extended Reality (XR) with traditional co-creation methods to construct a unique and integrative design facilitation method named XR+. The XR+ method is intended to be used at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) to aid in the process of innovative cabin design. However, the method is not limited to cabin design and can be applied to various design cases.This method came to be by uniting a multitude of factors, namely: The Flying-V aircraft, galley design, traditional co-creation methods and the immersive potential of XR technology. The choice to work with the Flying-V aircraft as a case study was intentional. The absence of a predefined galley design presented a unique opportunity to develop and test the XR+ method. Design, in this study, leans heavily on the collective problem-solving capabilities brought to the table by participants when engaging in co-creation. This is key for addressing issues too complex for individuals alone. It resonates with the insights of Sanders & Stappers (2006), who highlighted a shift in the design process towards collective, future-oriented design practices. Given that XR has gained significant popularity in recent years and found its way into the design world, it seems pertinent to explore how this technology can be combined into a method with these collective, future-oriented design practices. The first step for this was taken by DLR in a paper exploring XR for the cabin design process. The journey towards a design method combining co-creation and XR were significantly influenced by collaborating with KLM cabin crew. In total, five co-creation workshops were held, each dedicated to galley design for the Flying-V, and each serving as an iteration to refine and integrate the XR+ approach within co-creation methodologies. The workshops highlighted the unique strengths of both traditional co-creation and XR. As part of traditional co-creation, participants found physical elements, like blocks, easy to use and effective for initiating conversation and generating ideas. Once these initial concepts were built using 1:20 scale physical objects, the immersive environment of XR was introduced to further explore these concepts on a 1:1 scale. After immersing in XR, practical aspects of the initial physical design were brought to the forefront. Additionally, XR created a new spark of engagement and new creative possibilities were opened up, especially when participants took turns being in XR, creating a sense of curiosity in the non-immersed participants and wanting to be part of the immersion. Taking turns immersing led each participant to build on to the idea of the previous participant, each participant ‘hitchhiking’ onto each others’ ideas.It was found that where idea generation stops in the physical world, it continues in the virtual world—highlighting the unique strengths of both traditional co-creation and XR.The conclusion of this research presents a guide for DLR and other design stakeholders to integrate XR+ into their design processes and to use as an add-on to their current practices. Integrating traditional co-creation elements with XR stimulates ideation, deepens understanding of user needs, and leads to the discovery of innovative design solutions.Integrated Product Desig
