Kees de Groot, The Liquidation of the Church

    Get PDF
The book Liquidation of the Church has seemingly provocative name but also the long history of deep interest in church-society relations. The author, graduated sociologist and practical theologian, worked many years on different case studies in the Netherlands which he effectively brought in one original theoretical frame. It is mirrored in its structure: After introducing the concept of the liquidation of the church, Kees de Groot displays first the studies of ecclesial manoeuvres in fluid s..

    Access Control and Service-Oriented Architectures.

Access Control and Service-Oriented Architectures" investigates in which way logical access control can be achieved effectively, in particular in highly dynamic environments such as service-oriented architectures (SOA's). The author combines state-of-the-art best-practice and projects these onto the SOA. In doing so, he identifies strengths of current approaches, but also pinpoints weaknesses. These weaknesses are subsequently mitigated by introducing an innovative new framework called EFSOC. The framework is validated empirically and preliminary implementations are discussed.

Contrasting paths of corporate greening in Antipodean agriculture : organics and green production

    No full text
Over the last few decades, and throughout the world, the corporate sector has sought to establish its environmental credentials by integrating environmental and social justice issues into its corporate policy agendas and practice. Such restructuring is particularly evident throughout agriculture and food systems, where food processors and retailers appear to have taken note of the lessons to be drawn from the growth of the organic food sector. The growth of organic production has led the corporate sector to address - in various ways and to different degrees - 'green' issues in shaping the trajectory of this development. For some corporate actors, the influence of 'green' concerns has been manifest in little more than expressions of concern and statements of intent, which are designed to disguise current unsustainable practices. For others, in contrast, it is reflected in the restructuring of food production systems in ways that support the production of organic food, the development of environmental codes of practice and other initiatives which represent a new policy direction. In this chapter we analyse the different strategies of corporate greening which have emerged throughout the agrifood sector in the Antipodes. In particular, we focus on two food companies - Uncle Tobys in Australia and Heinz Wattie in New Zealand - and examine the specific greening practices of these firms, and the impacts of such practices on producers, consumers and others engaged in food networks. An examination of these changes in the agrifood sector illustrates the various ways in which firms are responding to broader social and environmental challenges facing the agriculture and food industry. In particular, the analysis of these cases draws attention to the role of the production and processing sectors in Australia and New Zealand in developing strategies of corporate greening. This marks a significant contrast to strategies of greening occurring elsewhere, including the UK where retailers have taken the lead in shaping the trajectory of systems of agriculture and food production. The findings from this chapter indicate that while food companies play a significant role in the Antipodean organic food sector - manifest in different ways across each of these locations - their entry to organics, to date, has not heralded a radical transformation of agricultural practices. While growth in the organic sector presents an opportunity to address those environmental and social problems that have emerged alongside the current farm crisis, the activities of food processing companies in the Antipodes have gone only part way to address these challenges

A Vertical Transport Geometry for Electrical Spin Injection and Extraction in Si

Schottky barriers formed between ferromagnetic metal and Semiconductor are of particular interest for spin injection and detection experiments. Here, we investigate electrical spin polarized carrier injection and extraction in Si using a Co/Si/Ni vertical structure built on a 250 nm thick Si membrane. Current-voltage measurements performed on the devices at low temperatures showed evidence of the conduction being dominated by thermionic field emission, which is believed to be the key to spin injection using Schottky junctions. This, however, proved inconclusive as our devices did not show any magnetoresistance signal even at low temperatures. We attribute this partially to the high resistance-area product in our Schottky contacts at spin injection biases. We show the potential of this vertical Spin-device for future experiments by numerical simulation. The results reveal that by growing a thin highly doped Ge layer at the Schottky junctions the resistancearea products could be tuned to obtain high magnetoresistance

The Stability of the Covariances of International Property Share Returns

    Get PDF
This paper looks at the covariance structure of international property share returns. Portfolio models, which are used to generate efficient international asset allocations, require estimates of a covariance structure of asset returns as input. Usually, the realized structure is used as a proxy, but that is only valid if this structure is stable. We test for this stability. We find covariances of international property share returns to be unstable, while correlations are stable between some time-periods, and unstable between others. The results cast some doubts on the use of standard portfolio models for the allocation of international real estate portfolios.

Plant protection in post-Soviet Kazakhstan: the loss of an ecological perspective

    No full text
This thesis examines why and how plant protection issues are embedded in political, economic and social contexts. It analyses the domain of plant protection in Kazakhstan under two different socio-economic and political formations, namely the Soviet period before 1991 and the post-Soviet period thereafter. The study of plant protection in a country in transition demonstrates how the wider political and socio-economic structures shape this particular field of agrarian science and practice. The thesis illustrates how Integrated Pest Management (IPM)/ecology-based pest-control approaches were broadly developed and practised in the USSR, including Kazakhstan. It identifies a shift from a knowledge system aiming at sustainable pest control in the Soviet era to an exclusive focus on pesticides in post-1991 Kazakhstan. This shift – which contradicts the global trend towards sustainability – leads to the central question of this dissertation: Why did such a shift occur in Kazakhstan after 1991? This thesis argues that the transformation of the agrarian structure, the destruction of the state-led/public organization of pest control, the neglect of research and extension and the aggressive promotion campaigns of the pesticide industry changed the plant protection perspectives in Kazakhstan. This dissertation describes how, and explains why, thinking about pest control changed within the wider knowledge system, including farming, research, extension and policymaking. As a result, essential elements of sustainable pest-management approaches were abandoned in Kazakhstan after 1991. In conclusion, this thesis points to an urgent need to rethink and rebuild the role of the government in pest control. Without stronger policy, less afraid to embrace positive aspects of the former Soviet plant protection system, highly destructive pest organisms will continue to threaten national food security, and indiscriminate and injudicious pesticide use will continue to pose considerable hazards for human health and the environment. The study shows that plant protection is more than just ‘getting rid of pests’ at the farm level. Pest-control issues are deeply embedded in political–economic–social contexts, through which the development and use of ecologically sustainable approaches and collective action for pest control can be either promoted or hindered. The government of Kazakhstan has a key function in supporting this long-term endeavour and creating conducive conditions for this to happen, as this will ultimately contribute to a more sustainable system of agricultural production and thus benefit society as a whole. <br/
