A methodology of constructing a decision path for IT investment
Information Technology (IT) may be used for organizational efficiency, but should also be flexible to adapt to the rapidly changing competitive business environment. In competitive business circumstances, management continually asks: (1) How flexible must the firm be in investing in IT in order to meet unknown business needs in the future? At the same time, how efficient must the firm be in order to meet current business needs?; (2) How well must the firm align its business strategy with IT investment in order for it to support its strategic goals?; (3) how to construct a decision path for IT investments with respect to flexibility, efficiency and alignment between business strategy and IT investments? Although many researchers have struggled to answer these questions, they generally provide no means for incorporating these factors into the rr investment decision process. This paper suggests a method that identifies the degree of flexibility required (alpha -value), and accounts for and incorporates the alpha -value in making IT investments. The proposed method is based on a product development method called Quality Function Deployment (QFD). It will be applied to a real case of the "H-company" in Korea to validate and evaluate the proposed methodology. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved
EXPLICIT PATH TRACKING BY AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES
We have suggested a novel approach to autonomously navigate a full sized autonomous vehicle that separately treats vehicle control and obstacle detection. In this paper we discuss the vehicle control that has enabled our autonomous vehicle to travel at speeds upto 20 mph. We point out the limitations of existing schemes that restrict their consideration to kinematic models and show that it is possible to obtain an increase in performance through the use of approximate dynamical models that capture first-order effects. Our approach combines such a modeling philosophy with accurate feedback in world coordinates from sensors that have only recently become available. Systematic methodology for the design of a flexible keel for energy-storing prosthetic feet
An effective design method is suggested for a flexible keel design for energy-storing prosthetic feet (ESPF). The basic, two-dimensional shape of the keel is based on anthropometric data and normal gait analysis available in the literature. Cost function is defined for the performance evaluation of the keel. Five factors and five levels of their effect on the performance of the keel are established. By use of an orthogonal array table, 25 trials of dynamic simulations of prosthetic walking are designed, from among 3125 possible combinations, dramatically reducing the number of total simulations needed to examine sufficiently the contribution of each factor to cost function. A prosthetic walking model is built, and a dynamic simulation of prosthetic walking is performed using the finite element method. The contribution of each factor to cost function is investigated by an analysis of variance (ANOVA), and the average main effects of factors for cost function are calculated. The optimum combination of factor levels is obtained by minimisation of cost function. To examine the structural safety of the keel, the deformation and stress distribution of the keel are investigated by static analysis, and failure indices are calculated by three failure criteria. Finally, the optimum flexible keel is designed with increased energy storage capacity, without failure, and suitable for more active prosthetic walking; the recoverable strain energy stored in the optimum ESPF keel is 25.8J

Towards the tumble resistant microlight
The tumble mode is a pitching departure from controlled flight which leads to a pitch autorotation that is generally unrecoverable – resulting in vertical ground impact, usually preceded by in-flight breakup (the mechanism for which, surprisingly, can sometimes prevent loss of life). This was identified in work led by the British Microlight Aircraft Association beginning in 1997 as a response to a number of fatal accidents in Rogallo winged microlight aeroplanes, although the tumble is also known to occur to hang-gliders. This paper explains how this class of aeroplane is controlled, and how it has been found that they can enter the tumble mode. The mechanism by which the tumble can be entered is described. This has led to work showing how flight testing can be used to establish and demonstrate resistance to tumble entry – particularly important with increasing number of very high performance flexwings. These flight tests will be explained, together with the significance of the results. Recent accident investigation work has also shown a new mechanism of tumble entry, through partial failure of the A-frame structure and the pitch-trimmer mechanism.
