Food vs. Fuel: The Role of Bioenergy

Length: 121,976 characters Abstract This thesis studies the relationship between the first generation biofuels and selected commodities and assets in the USA, Europe, and Brazil. It is the first attempt to combine the taxonomy and wavelet analyses in a single research application. Our unique dataset comprises 32 weekly price series covering the 2003-2015 time period. First, we employ a method of minimum spanning trees and hierarchical trees to model a biofuel-related price network. We demonstrate a development phase shift between Brazilian and the US/EU biofuel industries. We reveal a strong and stable connection between Brazilian ethanol and its main production factor, local sugarcane. We further find that US ethanol is closely linked to corn. In the contrary, European biodiesel exhibits only moderate ties to its production factors. Subsequent wavelet analysis scrutinizes the identified price connections both in time and frequency domains. Both Brazilian and US ethanols are found to be positively related to their respective feedstock commodities. In particular, feedstock proves to lead the price of the biofuel and not..

In the first part of this work there will be outlined Spannbrucker's life and professional career based on elaborate archival research. Special attention will be devoted to proprietors and a patronage of building projects wherein Spannbrucker participated or whereof was an author. In the connection, his work will be brought in contiguity of contemporaneous cultural, socioeconomical and aesthetical notions and relations. In the second part of this thesis there will be pointed out a characteristic and spring of inspiration of Spannbrucker's architecture by means of an accurate formal analysis. Optimal Deterministic Debt Contracts
No full textThis paper extends the costly enforcement model of optimal financing to the case of investment projects financed by several lenders. We consider the asymmetric situation when only one lender is a big strategic investor. All other lender are small passive investors. We first provide the sufficient and necessary condition for renegotiation proofness. Then we show that the optima verification is deterministic. The Quantitative and Qualitative Analysis of the Budget Cost of the Czech Supporting and Guarantee Agricultural and Forestry Fund
No full textThe paper analyzes the government budget cost of credit guarantees and subsidies. The analysis is done both in a general qualitative manner and quantitatively for the case of Czech Supporting and Guarantee Agricultural and Forestry Fund (SGAFF). In the quantitative part of the paper we show that the portfolio of the SGAFF has a sufficient value to cover expected costs of credit guarantees and subsidies provided by the SGAFF. The qualitative theoretical model is dealing with government interventions designed to decrease the credit rationing of good farmers. The theoretical model shows that with uniform non-targeted supports the budget cost minimizing government unambiguously prefers lump-sum guarantees to interest rate subsidies. With supports targeted fully to disadvantaged farmers the government is indifferent between lump-sum guarantees, proportional guarantees and interest rates subsidies as far as the government budget costs are concerned.Transition; Credit; Subsidies; Guarantees

No full textTato práce zkoumá vztah biopaliv první generace k vybraným komoditám a dalším aktivům v USA, Evropě a Brazílii. Jedná se o první aplikaci kombinující taxonomní a vlnkovou analýzu v rámci jedné práce. Unikátní dataset obsahuje 32 týdenních cenových řad, které pokrývají období let 2003 až 2015. Nejdříve používáme metodu minimální kostry grafu a hierarchického stromu, abychom modelovali systém cen souvisejících s biopalivy. Ukazujeme fázový posun mezi brazilskou výrobou biopaliv a vývojem v USA a EU. Nalézáme silné a stabilní spojení mezi brazilským etanolem a jeho hlavním výrobním faktorem, tamní cukrovou třtinou. Dále odhalujeme, že americký etanol je silně spojen s cenou kukuřice. Naproti tomu evropská bionafta vykazuje pouze slabé napojení na své výrobní faktory. Následná vlnková analýza zkoumá zjištěné závislosti v časové a ve frekvenční doméně. Nacházíme, že americký i brazilský etanol jsou dlouhodobě pozitivně svázány s cenami svých výrobních surovin. Ceny biopaliv jsou navíc taženy cenami surovin, nikoli naopak. Naše výsledky zůstávají kva- litativně nezměněny, i když odfiltrujeme možný vliv cen ropy. No full textI Abstract The first chapter of the thesis is devoted to the Flickr.com website and its evolution from its foundation until the present and to the posibility of its usage as a news source. The second chapter further explores the concept of folksonomy itself, it presents its definition, the basic approaches to its typology and singly it disserts on tag, on its forms and functions on the Flickr.com website. In the third chapter we will elaborate on the status of photography in its digital form, on its unstability and predisposition to be subject to language. The forth chapter puts forward the characteristics of text in the sphere of Internet, that of its nonlinearity, and it goes on about titles, captions and text as such in relation to photography. The fifth chapter then details the ability of tags to influence the perception of photography in the cyberspace and it addresses another phenomenon, that of the notes. The sixth and the last chapter presents the results of the "Flickrdream" research, whose objective was to find out to what degree are the tags in relation with photos on Flickr capable to comply with representation of such a complex phenomenon as a dream
