Multiple Effects of Host Density on Egg Density and the Sex Ratio of Progeny of Bracon hebetor (Say.) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae)

Insect parasitoid optimises their reproductive potential by exploiting host immune system, varying clutch size and progeny sex ratio with reference to the host density. Egg density and the progeny sex ratio of Bracon hebetor Say (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) was studied in relation to the larval density of its host Galleria mellonella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae). Our findings revealed that parasitoid’s egg density increased with the increase in host density. A comparison was made between egg laying and egg hatching on different host densities and maximum number of egg laying was observed (134.7 eggs) at the highest host densities (16 larvae) while a minimum number of egg laying (15.6 eggs) was registered at lowest host density (one larvae). The egg hatching was decreased due to crowding of eggs laid on host’s larvae and the percentage of adult emergence was also decreased with the increase in crowding of eggs on host’s larvae. It was observed that progeny sex ratio (male/total) increased with the increase in host density. Further dispersion pattern of parasitoid eggs on different host densities were estimated by the Green index. This study has generated novel information on egg laying, egg dispersion and sex ratio of B. hebetor which may lead to the development of sustainable biocontrol programs for lepidopteron insect pests

When sexuality is in a research topic! The methodological\ud challenges in sexuality and street healing research in\ud Bangladesh

    No full text
This paper is a bridge between two studies by the author: (i) completed MA research; and (ii) on-going PhD research, on male sexual health and the street healing system in Bangladesh. Street healing, a traditional healing system in Bangladesh, is at the centre of the studies. This is a popular form of folk healing in Bangladesh, where male impotency is a central issue. The author has been researching street healing to understand male sexual health-seeking behaviour in Bangladesh. In this paper, the author brings in experiences from his MA research to explore the challenges of studying sexuality and street healing in Bangladesh and concludes by describing his plan to address those issues in his on-going PhD research

Abstract: Professional development of faculty members is an emerging concept in developing countries. It has been embraced quickly in developed nations unlike developing and under developing nations. The major purpose of this paper is to explore various perceived issues and challenges to professional development of faculty members and to provide suggestions to improve such emerging problems. This paper provides suggestions and recommendations for the universities where professional development practices have not yet started or have been started but facing some problems. Author has explored various perceived issues and challenges highlighted by prior studies that have further served as basis to design structured questionnaire and semi-structured interview questions for this study. Four renowned universities of Punjab were selected from which sample of 108 respondents were chosen for data collection. Data has been analyzed by taking simple means and standard deviations through SPSS. The findings of this paper reveal that the issue that is most alarming and has got lowest mean score is granting rewards and incentives and level of satisfaction of faculty members to professional development programs. Author has provided various recommendations as to conduct proper need assessment before training, to properly plan quality training programs and take input of trainees as well, to increase grants and funds for training, to create positive working environment for teachers, to train the trainers, to provide financial and non financial benefits to trainees and to properly scheduling training programs. This study could be beneficial for policy makers, managers and administrators of universities who could device better policies and practices to promote quality teaching in institutes. Embodied Conversational Agent for Mental Health Intervention

    No full text
Embodied Conversational Agents (ECA) seek to provide a more natural means of interaction for a user through verbal and non-verbal properties of human face-to-face communication. For this reason, these systems are found to bring benefits in different mental health related interventions. However, a key challenge in developing agents to replace the human interlocutor in a dyadic conversation, is to simulate appropriate attentive listening behaviors. In this thesis work, we explored different backchannel strategies and studied their effects in terms of likability and engagement. We built a fully embodied conversational agent with three different levels of backchannel strategies and ran a within-subject study with a convenience sample of 24 participants. The results showed that the amount of emotional words in the speech of users increased if the attentive listening capabilities of the agent were improved. In addition, the capability to trigger both verbal and nonverbal backchannels with proper timing was found to be a relevant feature in terms of improved speech rate and emotional words. Contrary to our hypothesis, backchannels based on actual emotion and sentiment analysis of the speech content were not found to be significantly influential on the quality of interaction. Multi-modal approaches are suggested for future works in order to overcome limitations of this work due to potential lack in emotion detection accuracy.Digital Media Technolog

THE IMPACT OF SOCIOECONOMIC STATUS ON STUDENTS' ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT

Abstract: The objective of this research was to investigate how a student's socioeconomic status impacts their academic performance. A descriptive survey method was used to conduct the study on all elementary level public sector students in district Mansehra. A two-stage random sampling technique was applied to select the sample. To determine the socioeconomic status of the students, a questionnaire was designed, while a test consisting of 40 multiple-choice questions on Math and English was used to measure their academic achievement. Reliability of the instrument was measured using Cronbach's alpha, resulting in a value of 0.85 for the questionnaire and 0.83 for the test. Mean, percentage, and frequency were used for data analysis. The study concluded that students from families with average financial status performed better academically than those from below-average financial status families. Additionally, students whose parents had higher levels of education scored higher on average compared to those whose parents had lower levels of education. These findings demonstrate the importance of socioeconomic status and parental education in predicting academic success and the need for targeted interventions to address disparities in educational outcomes among students from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds.
