    Sheriff James P. Davidson was born in South Carolina and served as a volunteer in the Spanish-American War. After the war he returned to North Carolina to marry his favorite lady, Claudia Oak, and they moved to Palmetto. There he farmed until becoming sheriff, during the onset and worst of the Great Depression. There was actually a low crime rate during his term of office
